We were just in the vet with this today..she was extremely unwell and I was worried there was something that may cause us to lose her. She's doing better now but no food for 24 hrs and will be on medication and low fat diet for a few days. Hoping she gets back to her happy playful self soon.

My dog is at vet now for this reason. Too many table scraps I guess. He did blood work and Taz was dehydrated and prblems with the pancreas. They're doing an IV cath right now to give him fluids and gonna try to give him some bland food in an hour or so. If he does well they'll send him home with some antibiotics and i think he said anti inflam meds. Otherwise he may have to go back tomorrow for more fluids. My poor little guy:(

That's why it's a good reason not to feed your dogs from the table. I learned this 30 years ago. I feed my little dog from human scraps. He eventually got Pancreatitis. It is very painful. I learned my lesson in time and he lived to a very old age.

You haven’t spoken on so many points
1 in chronic pancreatitis the lipase levels are below normal
2 pancreatitis can occur as a gut manifestation of babesiosis gibsoni infection which is diagnosed late( as in my lab)
3 in chronic pancreatitis enzymes and probiotics and antacids play an important role in recovery
4 it may take months for the pancreas to heal keep giving a bland diet less in amount but more frequently

@Tuffnell1 I hope your Spaniel hangs in there. My own dog had a lipase and amylase through the roof (> 10,000) and pulled through. Every dog is different. Thanks, Dr Sam

Our Pomimo dog of 12 years, Scooter died two weeks ago from this. He had a complication also that they are not sure what happened, but his stomach blew up twice its size. Maybe a ruptured spleen or something. It hurts a lot when a loved pet is lost. Try to never feed your dog foods high in fat. I did this at times, and I feel guilty.

cont: Bloody, gel-like stool is a common symptom of pancreatitis.Parvo and intestinal parasites can cause this too, but if you've already ruled those out, this could possibly be the problem. The pancreas breaks down fats in the body, and when the amount of fatty foods consumed is more than the pancreas can handle, it slows down/shuts down and can ultimately cause death, if the case is severe enough

my dog had this a few years back its very scary. I ended up taking him to the vet twice a day for IV fluid for a week. Ive also had to work hard since to make sure his diet doesn't hurt him so only food from the vet and NO MORE TABLE SCRAPS
does anyone know any good snacks i could give him such. My vet said regular cheerios are ok and to limit the size of his meals

Pancreatitis occurs often when they are fed fatty, poor quality foods, such as hot dogs, lunch meats, chips, etc. Basically any greasy, fatty food can cause this problem. Therefore, it is VERY important to NOT feed your dogs "people" food! (cont below)

bluepeas510 I have to disagree with you in my dogs case. She’s been feed Science Diet for eight years and is a yorkie. I believe that some dogs are predisposed. I have no real sources to back it up though. She’s sick with pancreatitis and getting worse.

Our dog is a Rat Terrier his Pancreatic attacks started with his thyroid had a problem causing his triglycerides to be 1000 this in turn made his pancreas painful he only gets terrible pain. He crys and runs around in circles rolling on the ground. It's terrify to watch we have him on thyroid pills and WD diet food. Last week he ate an asparagus stalk that was cooked and it set off the worst attack we ever saw. Our regular vet tried some pain killers but it didn't work.

If anyone is watching this video in 2019 PLEASE help! This is the second time this year I've had my dog to the vet because of her symptoms of pancreatitis. She is in terrible shape right now because she also has epilepsy and she won't take her phenobarbital orally. Her last dose was Wednesday morning and it's Friday night now. Is it possible to give her the phenobarb and other meds anally since she won't take orally plus it will cause more discomfort to her pancreas. ??? TYIA

Hello, I am a Veterinary Technician so I have some experience with this, your best bet instead of the internet is to call your veterinarian directly as they are the ones who prescribed it to you. As you were probably informed, this isn't a medication you want to miss doses on when dealing with epilepsy. I'm not sure how you normally administer your pet oral medications, but with help it is possible with two people and the right technique, unless otherwise advised from a professional you should always medicate the exact way of your instructions!

Then our emerancy vet used some anti nausea injections and a pepced injection this worked in about 30 minutes. I was amazed how good it worked much better then just torbutrol which we have used before, or this time our normal vet gave use Buprenorphine .3cc under the tongue liquid.

My dog has just been diagnosed with diabetes and pancreatitus. She has been in the hospital for a week. She is definitely not in pain and yet they say she has very high levels and increasing levels of those, lipase and amylase. They are going to try to give her some plasma.

Also I should mention that at one time he had to take meds. with steroids because of his allergies(he was always scratching licking his paws)but then the vet found one with less steroids(but he hasn't gotten any smaller) and he also has an ear infection all the time which look like blackish earwax and smells like rotten cheese(which i have meds for).So what should i do with him?(he has alot of problems)

Dogs which are fed a species appropriate diet that is meat based do NOT generally run into this problem. It is really all about diet. Dry kibble diets are the culprit, with their heavy carbohydrate load - completely inappropriate for the carnivorous canine.

my dog died from pancreatic atrophy which the doctor couldn't find. we were visiting the vet clinic for 2 weeks until she past away yesterday 16th of March when i had to let her stay in the clinic because she was dehydrated from diarrhoea she also kept losing weight . Was there a way i could have saved her? They made all blood tests and abdominal x-ray and everything was clean. Is it possible that they couldn't diagnose the problem?
