God bless Mr. McLean. I only recently viewed the film version of "The Most Reluctant Convert". I have to point out that Mr. McLean's performance was so personal and magnetic that I very nearly believed him to be C.S. Lewis himself. Many many thanks.
Great conversation! As a teenager in Colorado in the 1970’s Lewis played a great role in my early Christian life after my conversion. If memory serves, the second Christian book I read was “The Screwtape Letters.” What a worldview change that was for me!
I found Surprised by Joy on a clearance rack at Michigan State. I had no money, but I bought the book. C. S. Lewis brought me back to Christ. I'm Catholic now. Long road. Good road.
Lewis would not do social media if he were alive today. In “Surprised by Joy” he makes mention of not understanding why people would want to join in any activity that creates lots of acquaintances when a few real friendships are most meaningful. I don’t know what he was referring to in the 50’s since social media didn’t exist then but that thought profoundly fills the bill today.
Social media, for me has never created any acquaintances, but has watered and helped grown a few (by sharing memes) with people I already connected with. It also is a platform to have influence and other things, so I don't know if it's quite similar to whatever Lewis was referring to. I also haven't read Surprised by Joy so I don't know the context.
@@marialuisacruz7514 When I see people with 4,000 facebook friends, I know they don't keep up with most of those people nor or they people that I could call on for help. People who are told to do something often dont. I was in the army and people do screw up. But it coould have been no knowledge of tactics on director and i havent seen it but also sometimes directors frame a scene that evokes emotion in the audience that they know is not correct but gets you to feel the scene.

@@Clodaghbob Then why the strong involvement with the order ? I never heard him fully denounce the order which is tragic. What association does light have with darkness?
Dave Y What is tragic is that people are quick to believe the worst about others with no evidence and then condemn them for it. By the way, I am not pointing the finger at you. It took me a while to pin down the source of the smear. Apparently, it originated with a male witch (oh what a reliable witness!) who asserted that both CS Lewis and Tolkien had been initiated into the cult. There is no evidence of either. CS Lewis had been a strident atheist in his youth before converting to main stream Church of England and he never budged from that for the rest of his life. His writings are solidly Christian. Tolkien was strict Roman Catholic. The penalty for being a member of a pagan cult is excommunication (i.e. first class ticket on the non stop train to hell). He would not have had such a close association with CS Lewis if there was a genuine 'whiff of the pagan' about him. On the other hand WB Yeats (Irish poet) _was_ a member of Golden Dawn. His poetry wasn't Christian but they certainly didn't worship Lucifer. They never went beyond a half-belief in the faeries. I think you have to ask yourself the question: What would Satan do when he noticed that the writings of CS Lewis were attracting so many atheists, agnostics and assorted non believers and pointing them firmly towards Christianity? Answer: Get a well trained employee (the male witch) and have him discredit and slander CS Lewis and his friend, Tolkien, by broadcasting, across the world via the internet, that they were actually covert members of one of Satan's own clubs . That should stop potential members of the hellfire clubs from slipping away and straying into dangerous Christian territory where they could easily be yanked into one of the Enemy's clubs. As for why he didn't denounce the order, there was a multitude of bad things in the world that he didn't (or didn't have time to) denounce. For example, séances were all the rage at that time. Instead he devoted his energies to a positive declaration of his Christianity rather than poking around every heresy and weirdo faith ever invented. And you have to remember that he was just a private individual. He wasn't a priest or a pastor and clearly didn't see that he had any role in monitoring the beliefs of others.
Good post. It reminded me of reading about AA founder Bill Wilson, who at one time was using Ouija boards, doing seances, and directly talking to spirits. Lewis also wrote in Suprised by Joy about the dangers of these things. IIRC, Alistair McGrath has a good section on Lewis’ views and experiences here in his bio.
