Can we just appreciate that Zaragoza sacked was worth 6666 florins and Jon is excommunicated AND the Mongols seem afraid to attack him. Starting to see where the colour red and the devil began to merge
Shelf Full of Trash well, he has had a bit more time to build his confidence, and since he generally has a rather upbeat and non-divisive channel/manner, the community stays (reasonably) nice as well, which I think has a noticeable impact as well.

Hey Jon, you should do a miniseries of Total war battles. Recreated famous battles from your series, the catch is you play the opposite team and try to fight off your armies. Such as battles like the crusade of Poland, see how good you can do in your enemies shoes!! I think that'd be fun to watch:D
I've been through the desert on a Pope with no name, It felt good to be out of the rain. In the desert you can remember your name, 'Cause there ain't no one for to give you no pain.
and if you do a bridge battle against mongols, dont try to hold the bridge, just lay back and lure them on to bridge, while on bridge missile units cant fire, and then charge them at the mouth of the bridge while all their ranged units are stuck on bridge
Jon, I have noticed in my playthrough that different unit types have different flag shapes so that you could easily spot them in battle. The ones that I have noticed so far are that triangle flags are ranged units and square flags are melee units.
I'm stunned that you uttered the phrase "Pope on the Ropes" and didn't use it as the title. You've heard of the elf on the shelf, now get ready for the pope on the ropes!
A question: why does Jon never create multiple breaches either side of the gate with the artillery then use the rest of the ammo through the breaches on the units inside?
Probably because with any form of artillery in this game the more damage you do to the walls costs more to repair. Also if he shot through the walls and hit any buildings they also cost more to repair. And most of the time the AI will end up realizing what you are doing and will either abandon the walls and fall back to the plaza or to some street. If he just knocks down the gate the AI will probably stand by the gate, but the more breaches you make the more likely they are to run away from the walls and cause just a chock point in the streets.
Why not blow another hole in the wall with cannons and line up a shot with them? Don't the cannon balls roll through troops? Would imagine the "kill zone/alley" would be even better. Roughly minute 39-ish ... lol, nm you ended up doing that. :D
When the AI heard that John was gonna play Denmark, they laughed. They laughed at this. They all vowed to attack or betray him while John seemed innocent and busy making puns. But they aren’t laughing now. They are dead.
the authority in this game is all flipped up. i played french and both my king and heir were utterly insane with The Mad title yet for reasons unknown my king had 10 authority no matter how many garbage traits he kept earning.
Yeah, that's a known bug, authority can actually underflow. Means if you have -1 authority it will actually display as 10. And then you can pray your kind doesn't get a trait with +1 authority, because then you go back to 0. :)
Bit confused why you didn't take down the part of the wall immediately to the left of the gate in Venice so you could fire your bombards up the thoroughfare. Considering how bunched the troops were, you would have done some tremendous damage.
“Popes lost a third of their strength, and this guy still got over half of his, so we’re straight up winning there”, might have to question your maths there Jon
That thing where you lose the papal elections even when you get the most votes/most holy candidate just seems to be something that happens -- in the game I'm playing now, I pretty frequently lose the elections despite having the most votes. I guess it's just a bug?
Perhaps it counts as a bonus if several factions vote for a candidate, compared to just one? Unless in your case it wasn't a tie, in which case it must be a bug

Its nice to finally see The Pope in battle, even if she was on the opposing side. Although I must say, I expected her outfit to look more... Papal? Thanks for the video!
With Charles the Mad giving his troops a -7 morale, what happens when he died? Do they get even more demoralized or does their morale go up because he is no longer there to give them the -7?
Surely it should have been Stephanie the pope? Also, one thing I don't understand, why did want to lure the Mongols to you, apart from to kill the rubbish King. Surely having the stuck ineffectually in no-man's land is the best thing! You can send you King to them if he needs 'taking care of'.
If a king has a moral of -7 and is slain in battle does the opposing force gain a moral boost... Because if my King was -7 moral dies I know I'd be happy and eager to carry on fighting...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jon never really did construct cannon towers in Acre, right? Or Gaza for that matter. He always talked about building them if he had enough money, but never did build them.
As someone who watched t his far after it was posted, I'm getting a lot of flashbacks to Jon's CK2 series where he remade Rome through the Byzantines. The Danes shall either help to Rebuild the Roman Empire, or conform it to their own. CONQUESTS INTENSIFY
At least you CAN wipe out the Pope in this game. CK2 makes it where he/she, at worst, get reduced down to a mad person sitting in a house, yelling for Crusades occasionally. Naturally, these auto-cancel since there are no Catholics left. At least mending the Great Schism will get Popey to shut up about the non-existent crusading, though.
Can anyone tell me what unit size setting he uses? I will soon finish my first campaign on this game and for the next . one I would like to have same sizes as Jon.
Am I the only one who is jealous because as Brutii in Rome 1 on hard (not very hard as Jon was) I had the greeks and macedonians both attack me at the same time way before I was ready, and both were allied with both Thrace and Dacia, so no ally options and I just got annihilated. Yet Jon can easily conquer the world on harder settings and win battles much more easily, while also having quite possibly the worst perception I have ever seen. It didn't help in my Brutii campaign that in Apollonia the first cavalry charge in the campaign into the back of distracted militia hoplites killed one of my family members instantly -_-
Unlucky, the AI generally seems passive and the factions provoke each other. But I think the game design aims to ramp up difficulty as you expand aggressively. Jon is likely focused on commentating, trying to keep things moving and unreasonableness is entertaining 😁. As he's played the game a fair bit, he exploits AI where a new RTW player might well see his army cracked and lose control of his whole army.
Rafael Mota I'm currently doing one. It's fun, a little difficult and a real change in playstyle. Currently own the iberian peninsula, most of italy, africa, egypt and most of france. Admittedly the pope did not appreciate me taking Rome. I think Jon would enjoy it!
I play as Milan, and become ally with venice and roman at early turn. I never tresspassing to another faction turf and only attacing rebel settlement. When my main army trying to take rebel castle at bern, Venice attacked my capital and that happen exactly when my faction leader die from age. And when i take my capital back, their faction leader died and i attack Venice capital, the pope threatening me to ceasefire and pull back my troop (and pope reduce my cross from 7 to 4, but venice dont have any penalty from taking my capital) so i ignore pope and taking Venice and kill their new faction heir. I become exocomunicated, and venice trying to take their capital again. Suddenly pope main army attack my Florence and kill 2 general there, so i take it back and kill 2 pope general and i lost 1 general :( So i send my assassin to rome and with 27% he succed kill pope😈 I dont know whats wrong with pope, Venice who attacked me first but they hate me because i take my capital again. Aargh😾 Edit: when i siege rome, my cardinal become pope and suddenly he become neutral to me, but they still ally with venice. Now im confused, if i attack venice territory, am i going to be exocomunicated again? Is the pope will letme attack venice? The pope name is "Pope Ugo of Milan". An interesting style of thinking, Jon.
If I kill enough Popes I can become a good Catholic.

Just got done rewatching FO3: Kill Everything, and I have to say that Jon sure does sound more energetic and upbeat in these more recent videos.
Shelf Full of Trash i noticed that to, his showmanship really improved over time.
Shelf Full of Trash well, he has had a bit more time to build his confidence, and since he generally has a rather upbeat and non-divisive channel/manner, the community stays (reasonably) nice as well, which I think has a noticeable impact as well.
Thomas Zwaanswijk dont forget the amount of roleplayers that the total war series have produced
I'm amazed that after 57 episodes Jon still believes he can issue orders to his army by actually screaming at the screen
The Daily Hugalu
The Protestant Revolution Continues!

This world's history book must be really weird "yeah the mongol attacked us but we really really asked for it"

Rename Rome to honour Julianus Vatinius; after all, the danish can recognise greatness (even if their current king isn't)

Fun fact about the papel states in Medieval II: Territories controlled by the Papal States can't rebel.
Block the Antioch bridges!!
and if you do a bridge battle against mongols, dont try to hold the bridge, just lay back and lure them on to bridge, while on bridge missile units cant fire, and then charge them at the mouth of the bridge while all their ranged units are stuck on bridge
Lol. Pope on a rope. . . . Wait, that's dark.
I am convinced that we will never see the mongols attack. They are going to run away again.
"I've been sitting in Rome, as a Pope with no name.
I'm really afraid of the Danes."

Jon, I have noticed in my playthrough that different unit types have different flag shapes so that you could easily spot them in battle. The ones that I have noticed so far are that triangle flags are ranged units and square flags are melee units.
some of the best battles iv seen jon your papel wars where mint!!..tactics where on point ..and tactical pauses.. loved it mate
Every time I see this in my feed I gasp and say “Jon you shouldn’t have”
"Train a priest because we will need one shortly"
I was refusing to go to sleep until I watched this, despite having to get up for work at 5am tomorrow. Totally worth it.
Popefully, this is going to be a good video.
*EDIT* Just as I poped, it was.
:)
I'm stunned that you uttered the phrase "Pope on the Ropes" and didn't use it as the title.
You've heard of the elf on the shelf, now get ready for the pope on the ropes!
Jon please show the family tree next episode
Thumbs up if you want another Total War series after this one.
I'd love to see a Third Age Total War playthrough
Total War is the new Fallout New Vegas
Empire? or is there another between? He can finally play as the brits
I'd like to see some of the major mods for Medieval 2 such as Stainless Steel
I want to see him play Empire as the Brits, even though a lot of people disliked it it was one of my favourites, after rome shogun 2 and medieval 2

Jons playing whack a pope now.
I just now realized that the unit flags indicate the unit type: oblong for melee, triangle for ranged.
"I think that just improved traffic flow in this section".... *flashbacks to City Skylines*
Why not blow another hole in the wall with cannons and line up a shot with them? Don't the cannon balls roll through troops? Would imagine the "kill zone/alley" would be even better. Roughly minute 39-ish ... lol, nm you ended up doing that. :D
Dont clump up your units like that at the beginning ,the units at the back are not fighting but are getting tired.
When the AI heard that John was gonna play Denmark, they laughed. They laughed at this. They all vowed to attack or betray him while John seemed innocent and busy making puns. But they aren’t laughing now. They are dead.

It's never a tie, no; I always get a clear majority and France always wins. I think they're just rigging it, by which I mean it's probably just a bug.
Please post more of these game plays! This is too good to wait for the next video post lol!

Time to invade Venice! Maybe get a nice gondola ride afterwards ... wait, what do you mean Venice has no canals? Oh right, this is M2TW
My god, the day is almost upon us... next time, the Mongols are finally done twiddling their thumbs in the mountains
Julianus Vatinius would be appalled at how easily Rome fell.

Thanks for the video!
With Charles the Mad giving his troops a -7 morale, what happens when he died? Do they get even more demoralized or does their morale go up because he is no longer there to give them the -7?
There's a new total war game coming out soon right? Total War Britannia or something?
Surely it should have been Stephanie the pope?
Also, one thing I don't understand, why did want to lure the Mongols to you, apart from to kill the rubbish King. Surely having the stuck ineffectually in no-man's land is the best thing! You can send you King to them if he needs 'taking care of'.
Because he really wanted to show off a battle defending against the Mongols, and they weren't cooperating.
dunfalach I see, so it's not a strategic in game thing then. It's for the benefit of us viewers.
Do Empire total war next please
Jon, just asking, can you hurry up and take out the Egyptians, it'll help the happiness in Jerusalem
When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro.
The poor pope :( Poor lass
If a king has a moral of -7 and is slain in battle does the opposing force gain a moral boost... Because if my King was -7 moral dies I know I'd be happy and eager to carry on fighting...
Wasn't the Pope's bodyguard a super strong spear unit called the Swiss Guard or was that another version I was playing?
As far as i remember the Papal States have the Swiss Guard on their unit roster.
Good Video Jon
"ChopChopChopChopChopChopChopChopChopChopChopChopChopChop DEAD" - Jon, 2017
To be honest, you kinda almost wiped out Catholicism from the world anyway...
Can you do a modded playthrough after this one? Stainless Steel or Broken Crescent, I want to know how your tactical skills prove themselves in those.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jon never really did construct cannon towers in Acre, right?
Or Gaza for that matter.
He always talked about building them if he had enough money, but never did build them.
Should have called this episode The Holy Wars.
Any plan that does not involve extermination is not a plan suitable for Jon.
As someone who watched t his far after it was posted, I'm getting a lot of flashbacks to Jon's CK2 series where he remade Rome through the Byzantines. The Danes shall either help to Rebuild the Roman Empire, or conform it to their own. CONQUESTS INTENSIFY
Sleep is for the weak anyway......
I scare myself sometimes... You said "let's go kill the pope," and I immediately started singing that to the tune of "let's go fly a kite."
So, did some troops break *almost* immediately in this episode?
Who could've thought Denmark would be the ones to reclaim Rome!?
49:07 A Pope by any other name would smell as sweet.
Can anyone tell me what unit size setting he uses? I will soon finish my first campaign on this game and for the next . one I would like to have same sizes as Jon.
54:05 what does that joke mean jon
Am I the only one who is jealous because as Brutii in Rome 1 on hard (not very hard as Jon was) I had the greeks and macedonians both attack me at the same time way before I was ready, and both were allied with both Thrace and Dacia, so no ally options and I just got annihilated. As he's played the game a fair bit, he exploits AI where a new RTW player might well see his army cracked and lose control of his whole army.
Yeh you did quiet a number on venice .. id range it about 3 out of 4 on the why u have to go to the toilet scale.. a 3 being a wee a poo and a spew
Give Rome to the true romans the Byzantines
moors campaign after this one please!
Rafael Mota I'm currently doing one. It's fun, a little difficult and a real change in playstyle. Currently own the iberian peninsula, most of italy, africa, egypt and most of france. Admittedly the pope did not appreciate me taking Rome. I think Jon would enjoy it!
How did Jon get a Pope with no name?
Just wondering is this a mod or an expansion because I cannot seem to play the danish faction?
Paddy Hughes u have to have won a campaign as one of the available factions at the start. Or u can do something in the game files (google it)
You have to win the main campaign with one of those first 5 before you can play with other factions.
Ah thanks I'll get right on that then
Give them the old popeadope
shogun 2 after this, please
I know that milan sucks to play against but I'm having fun playing as them
This is on very easy, isnt it ? Because the AI infantry is not protecting his archers ?
It's on Hard/Hard, the AI... does its best, but it's not always what it should be
I dont really watch this series and ive returned from episode 4 where are the generals in the comments?
mongal hype
Suddenly pope main army attack my Florence and kill 2 general there, so i take it back and kill 2 pope general and i lost 1 general :(
So i send my assassin to rome and with 27% he succed kill pope😈
I dont know whats wrong with pope, Venice who attacked me first but they hate me because i take my capital again. Aargh😾
Edit: when i siege rome, my cardinal become pope and suddenly he become neutral to me, but they still ally with venice.
Now im confused, if i attack venice territory, am i going to be exocomunicated again? Is the pope will letme attack venice?
The pope name is "Pope Ugo of Milan". If they exocomunicated me again, i will kill that fuckin traitor pope from my faction.
First female pope and you kill her. Seems a little sexist there bud 🤣
More house flipper please for the dull people like me.
FROST!!!!!
first
Good for you
Hi Jon,
Fun semi-random fact: The leader of Imperial legion in Morrowind is called Varus V A N T I N I U S!
Truly, greatness of Vantinius family transcends all games and genres!
Thought I might share that here.
