    I am trying to develop my own breed of chicken by crossing the American Bresse ( the best tasting chicken in the world that also lays 250 eggs per year) with the Cornish Cross (the fastest growing chicken with the best feed conversion) to do this I slowed the growth of 3 Cornish Roaster roosters so they would be at a healthier weight for breeding and then put them in with my American Bresse hens. Keep in mine when switching out roosters how long it take for the old rooster to stop fertilizing eggs and how long it take for the new rooster to start fertilizing eggs

    I have a year old Cornish cross rooster…he’s 27lbs…..incapable of mating and can’t run 😂. We call him hulk chicken because he’s a freak of nature

    I used a Breese rooster and cornish X hen, the offspring grew bigger than their parents. The chicks had different color feet, some were white, green, blue and yellow.

      Interesting! How did you keep the hens from getting too fat?

      @@The.Recreational.Homestead I started collecting the eggs from two fat Cornish hens as soon as I could, so the eggs were on the small side, but all the chicks turn out to be big birds with out obesity problems and can live normal lives. One of the Cornish X hen that I used for breeding blew her guts out and the other died a week later. They lived for about two months after they started laying eggs. I am currently using the chicks as parent stock. I have 4 hens with their Breese father and 4 hens with their brother in a separate breeding pen. I just put eggs from both groups in two separate incubators. I think the Breese father group will produce better egg layers and the Brother sister group will produce better meat birds. The rooster from the brother sister group is about 10 lbs. and he is 5 months old.

      What was the meat like?

    • @mangofever4681
      @mangofever4681 Рік тому

      @@amandagrifka6739 I just hatch 3 males with white legs, 1 hen with blue leg and 1 hen with yellow leg from a Blue leged rooster.
      I processed the males at 3 month old they average 5 to 6lbs dressed, at that age the meat is still tender and can be fried or roasted.
      At first I was breeding for white legs, but the yellow leg hen that I just hatched pulled more on the cornish x side and is the heaviest of the bunch. I will use this hen to continue my meat line. The blue legged hens will probably be better egg layers, so I'll keep them around for eggs.

    Good news is I have found with this cross the roos have yellow legs and the hens will keep the blue legs, so you can sex them by about 2-3 weeks.

      The cost and the fact that I have to count on a hatchery and the post office to get my meat birds is why I want my own breed. There are alternative breeds out there but they are still high bred so you don’t get the same chicken when you hatch your own eggs and the hen are made to grow as big and as fast as the roosters so they are not good egg layers. In the wild males look like males and females look like females but through years of breeding we have got them to look almost the same.

    I'm cross breeding White Plymouth Rocks to Dark Cornish Roosters. No Eggs yet. 19 weeks old. I do have one white Plymouth rooster that was my bonus Chick. Hopefully keep a couple of hens for purebred Plymouth Rocks.

      @@The.Recreational.Homestead I have Speckled Sussex, Barred Rocks, and Leghorn egg laying hens. All of which are slow growing. I've harvested young roosters but would like a faster growing bird with the added flavor of Breese. I was always told "u can't breed the cornish crosses so I'm glad to hear what your doing. Good luck moving foward.

    What the Cornish will do is add a higher incidence of breast meat, for starters. I have a "surprise box" pair of heritage Cornish (Indian Game) and really like them. I also have two blue Bresse, but as they're not representing the highest breed quality, I think I'll try the cross for my own use. The Heritage Cornish doesn't grow as fast as the comm. "Rock Cornish" you buy frozen in the store, but I'm not going to be making money on this move. All my others chickens are Leghorn based egg layers, not meat birds. So here we go!!

      Thanks for the info, quality Bresses are hard to come by there’s a lot of people selling low quality Bresse chicks. I think it’s great that you are going to play with cross breeding them, please let me know how it goes. It’s shouldn’t always be about making money that why I named this Chanel the RECREATIONAL homestead, because we are homesteading for the fun of it not because we NEED to. Thanks for watching!

      Try the cross with freedom rangers broilers,it would work.Right know i haching fredom rangers chicks ,from ranger hens.my hens are 10 months know and doing great.I do keep them on low fat diet,as the amount of eggs per week on each Freedom ranger hen,i get like 5 eggs per hen per week. One drawback is that you get like 15 percent double yokers, but very good to eat.

      Great question, my idea was that the Bresse hens are good layers so if I could just get one roosters to breed all 10 hens ones and they laid fertilized eggs for just one week after that I would get 50 eggs to incubate instead of 3 Cornish hens laying maybe 8 eggs in one week.

    It is a challenge to get the rooster to make and you have to artificial Insemination.
