    There is something really heart-warming, listening to an owner when they are old enough to have been around when the car was brand new. This fella reminds me of that 64 Imperial owner. This is one of the main reasons I enjoy classic car shows: because of people like these. So, Another Good Job Lou. - Keep Up the essential work ! = )

      @@loucostabile I was at a vintage and classic car gathering recently and someone commented that it has become an older man's hobby. Very few young men with the dozens of cars at the show. The person who commented said today's young men are interested in newer sporty cars with elaborate sound systems for their thumping music, not chrome and fins. That's too bad. We must strive to keep the hobby alive as long as we are around.

    Beautiful car! This one was built in the first half of the model year. In the 2nd half of the year, Dodge widened the trim piece running down the side of the car, and added a wider bezel (frame) around the rear license tag. These changes were called the "Spring Trim". It's great to see such a wonderful car preserved in such pristine condition. Thanks for posting the video of this gorgeous car -

      D500 was Dodge's performance package. You got a higher horsepower engine, bigger brakes, stiffer springs. You could also get just the D500 engine, but the whole package was the way to go.

    Mopar invented muscle cars in the mid 50's...the Chrysler 300, Desoto Adventurer, Dodge D500, and Plymouth Fury. The 1955 Chrysler 300 is the OG of muscle cars...not the 64 Pontiac GTO. I even heard Jim Wangers himself say that during an interview. Jim worked for Plymouth before moving to Pontiac in 1958. The late 50's Chrysler performance models were beautiful and fast cars but they did have some build quality issues. Virgil Exner was a genius.

      @@loucostabile I enjoy your great website. It's interesting the knowledge you can obtain from students of the 1957 and 1958 Dodges. Minor details that distinguish the model year. These two years look almost identical. One distinction is the rear view mirror mounted on the dashboard. This was a Chrysler corporation feature on their cars from the late 1950's into the early 1960's. The 1957 Dodge had the mirror mounted in the center of the dash. For 1958 the mirror was moved closer to the driver near the speedometer housing. They probably found out drivers wanted an easier reach to adjust. A Dodge fan at the ForwardLook website pointed out the sporty interior with the metallic piping on the backrests including the single piping down the centers indicates a D-500 model. Also the D-500 emblem on the trunk lid pointed out in your video.

    This majestic mopar is wasted on a clueless interviewer. He is unaware that this was the first muscle car and could outrun anything on the street. The owner is a bit of a bad-ass himself, as the graphics in the interior suggest. If only he was asked to tell some stories!
    Even today that D-500 with optional high-lift cam and dual quads is capable of embarrassing some pretentious current-era cars. This setup makes 320 HP and 400 lb-ft. Like everything else in this car, the engine compartment is spotless. That converted truck motor with those gorgeous gold air cleaners would draw a big crowd at a cars-and-coffee event. If it was a musclecar event it would be hard to imagine ANY musclecar from any era, even an original Chrysler 300, able to get more attention. Especially from boomers who lived through the ‘68-‘71 golden age, for whom the Dodge D-500 was a mythical machine. Note to interviewer: Don't quit your day job.

      The Dodge D-500 is one of the very first American muscle cars. In 1956 the D-500 was the fastest production car in America. The 55 Chrysler 300 was the very first American muscle car. Then in 1956 the other 3 Mopar divisions(besides Imperial)released their own high performance cars...the DeSoto Adventurer, Dodge D-500, and Plymouth Fury. Mopar invented muscle cars...not Pontiac. The Exner era Mopars were the fastest and most beautiful cars on the road. The 57-58 Chrysler 300 is my personal favorite but this 58 Super D-500 is absolutely stunning. Man that is gorgeous

    its hard for us to remeber that Dodge was not a luxury car. It was mid class. To some extent it had more style than substance.

    • @1575murray
      @1575murray 5 років тому

      Before 1958 it had some of its own unique engines afterwards it shared the same engines with other Chrysler divisions. Afterwards Dodge became more similar to Plymouth especially in 1960 when the Dart was introduced on a shorter wheelbase Plymouth chassis. Chrysler allowed its divisions to compete with each other which led to DeSoto being discontinued in 1961 and Plymouth many years afterwards. Dodge was not really considered a luxury car in those days that was reserved for the senior Chrysler models.

    • @seed_drill7135
      @seed_drill7135 5 років тому

      @@1575murray Yeah, in '58 Dodge would have competed with Edsel and Pontiac, as the step up from the entry level Plymouth. But the Lancer D-500 was their performance model, so it's a lot more desirable today than a lot of "higher" end cars of the era.

Starting in '58 the V8 engines used either a Poly or Wedge head design. 1958 is also the year when Dodge engines starting growing in size. Dodge continued with the 325 Poly head for that year as the base V8, but also offered a 350 and a 361. The following year, 1959, came the the 383.

      Hi Flick Cogswell, Each car I video, I'm learning a little more from the Owners who have the cars. Hope you'll see more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy and learn something too, Lou

    • @MrTrack412

      Actually Flick there is a trick to interviewing people. One must make them be the experts. I have watched Lou do many cars and he has done many makes several times. To give you an example he obviously knows the 55-56-57-58-59-60 GM automobiles extremely well because he has featured a model from each of those years more than once. Few know as much about classic cars as Lou Costabile!By the way Flick, what do you know about cars?

    • @ImTheDaveman
      @ImTheDaveman 6 років тому

      Lou - forgive me for being blunt - but Flick is like so many other floaters on UA-cam that considers themselves professionals in everything and no one is as good as they are - in their own minds. They don't realize how much of a jerk they make their own selves out to be when they cut down others like you. Odds are he knows less about cars than he'd ever admit to. Just skip trollers like that. They don't warrant your time.
      While I believe in leaving negative comments on channels - there is a line drawn in the sand when said negative comments are not constructive in some way. If they cant be helpful in their critique, I flush em out. Like if someone writes a comment on my channel 'You Suck!" - well - I'd of liked to know why he or she thought I sucked. That might be helpful in some way - lol.

      Flick Cogswell Why are you being an ass? Lou is doing hard work to preserve automotive history for future generations. He asks questions to explain to an audience that may not have knowledge on classics what those things do on a car of that era. Cars back then had different terminology for functions and accessories. Why not just say something nice like, "hey lou thanks for showing us this awesome car." If you're such a car expert explain what some of those knobs do in the comments section in a respectful manner. I can tell you lou knows cars, and he is providing entertainment for all of us and is hardly making anything off it. What's wrong with people like you? Did your daddy not hug you enough? Did your wife leave you for another woman?

    If you're going to host a car, learn something about what you're doing. Doesn't even know hood ornaments.

      +American only Hi American Only, Thanks for your comment, you're absolutely right! I'm having so much fun, and I get so excited when doing some of the cars (and trying not to get hit by other cars driving by) I don't know if I'm talking about the hood ornament or discussing the ashtray. Please enjoy some of the other 500+ cars I've videoed and feel free to laugh out loud as you hear me blow the description on the next one, thanks for viewing, Lou

      American only You're just another assclown here to be a troll and pissing on what other people are trying to do. Try doing something with your life instead of sitting around on the internet and being a turd to others. Get a hobby. I bet either you're angry old washed up hippie, twice divorced and 50lbs overweight, or you're still living with your mom. Geez.

    wasn't 1958 the last year for the Dodge Red Ram Hemi engine?

    • @mlm3165
      @mlm3165 8 років тому

      +gojoe283 Yes they went to wedge in 1959.

    • @herman452
      @herman452 8 років тому

      +mlm3165 1957 was the last year for the Dodge hemi engine, and was used only in D500s that year and in 56. Most 56-7 Dodges used the Dodge poly motor, which was basically the Dodge hemi with poly (canted valve, single rocker shaft) heads instead of the opposed-valve, dual rocker shaft hemi heads. 1958 was the last year for the Dodge poly, and was the base V-8. Optional V-8 in 58 was the big block wedge, in 350 and 361 inch sizes. In 59, 361s were the base V-8s in Royals and Custom Royals, with 383s optional. These motors were also optionally available in the Coronet, but its base V-8 was a .040 over 318 Plymouth poly motor - i.e., the one year only 326 poly. Unlike 318 polys, the 326 poly had hydraulic lifters. In 60, the 326 inch base V-8 was replaced with the same 318 poly used by Plymouth.

      +herman452 And by the way, the engine in the 1958 Dodge shown here is a 361 wedge Super D500. The regular D500 had a single 4 barrel, the Super had two four barrels.

      My dad bought a 57 D500 from my brother. My brother had pulled the original 325 hemi out because it needed a rebuild and put in a 341 Desoto hemi W/ 2bbl carb. It was a real burner. My dad use to beat Corvettes with it. Anyway,my dad asked my brother for the original engine but my brother had scrapped it. All he had left was the Offenhauser aluminum intake W/ 2-Rochester 4bbl carbs.
