Been intrigued by MLS since the beginning of the season, coming from someone halfway across the world. What’s the deal with the leagues cup, eastern and western conferences?
It's new this year. I was not interested, but after watching this week I'm changing my mind pretty quickly. It is the Mexican First Division against MLS. Pool play and then single elimination.
The conferences is mostly just an American sports culture thing. It's how the other major sports leagues in this country setup. In the Orlando v Houston game you can clearly see the right leg of the defender make contact with the right leg of the attacker. From the angle in this video it looks like the attacker went down really easy. That being said, as we all know, VAR needs to have cold hard evidence that it was not a foul. When I see that contact, my mind says "there's no foul there, he went down easy." But as a VAR, put yourself in their shoes. They are disciplined for recommending any review that, in PRO's opinion, is not clear and obvious. So it makes sense that the VAR in this game sees the clear contact between the players legs and says "I don't think there's a foul here, but there was contact that could be construed as tripping, so I can't recommend a review here." In the end, based on the angles here, it should not have been a penalty. But anyone who blames the VAR for this doesn't understand the process. Every review that a VAR incorrectly recommends lowers the score they receive for their assessment and puts their job at risk. Seeing the contact, no wonder he refrained from recommending a review.

Because of how the Tijuana player’s arm extends fully after the Philly player falls I don’t think he pushed him. a soft foul 🤷🏻♂️ penalty maybe?, but he definitely didn’t shove him. Red card seemed excessive
With the headbutt, I would give the FC Cincinnati player a yellow card also. There was a shove that initiated the headbutt to commence. On the second PK call, I don't agree that it was a foul.
That was my thought watching the replay as well. Yes, the SKC player deserves his red for retaliating like that. However, the CIN starts the fight with something between a shove and a punch. The refereeing crew should have reviewed the initial shove/punch to decide if it was worthy of a red card.
@@th3awak3ning10 That's crazy and not within the laws of the game. A simple push which results in the opponent going psycho is still a simple push. In this case, a yellow for Cincy and a red for the idiot headbutter is clearly the correct call. That red should also be a 3 games suspension.
@@juliooo_perez And as much as it's easy to bash him when you don't agree with what he says, so much of it is judgment. That's where referees can and do differ in their opinion of calls. Was watching the NYCFC and Atlas match live. On top of your points which I agree with and was saying live as well, that review took 5 MINUTES! Clear and obvious error would not take 5 minutes. It seem they made the decision that there was no contact on the ball by the second player flicking (which I disagree) and at the point where it is 5 minutes you are trying to find something and every single angle I saw there was no definitive view that showed the flick on never happened. Extremely poor VAR group there. It is not meant to re-referee the play. Offside check should be 1-2 mins MAX. Also that Houston v Orlando call is horrendous. MLS refs are looking worse and worse.
For the NYC off side call, the ref must have determined that NYC #6 did not touch the ball, and that the deflection came from Atlas #2. If that is the case, then the moment of decision is when NYC #10 played the ball into the box.
How did you not cover the Red Bulls defender with his arms out at near 90 degree angles from his body in the most unnatural position possible making himself as big as possible and of course making contact with the ball in the box with his arm and the ref NOT calling the penalty and the VAR NOT calling for review. Second time the officials completely screwed the Revolution out of a result in New Jersey and handed points to the Energy Drinks. The league had to make an apology about the last one, will they even bother to acknowledge this one? PRO is utter trash and is holding MLS back with their inability to comprehend the laws of the game or to even implement them evenly from one week to the next.
Also the revolution getting robbed AGAIN the Red Bulls player is arms stretched out and it hits is arm in the box and no penalty this deserved a spot in here
Another week, another VAR official sitting behind the screen and deciding “I am going to ruin this match”. Par for the course this season in MLS matches.

NFL Refree in a MLS Game: "They will be 2 Fouls for both Cincinnati and Kansas City which will be enforced. As a result of the penalties, Number 9 of Kansas City (Alan Pulido) have now been disqualified from the game in addition to a Suspension and a Fine Reparation for the Remainder of the Season. While Number 15 for Cincinnati will be given a Yellow Card followed by being benched for the Second-Half of the game, followed by a three game suspension. It will be Cincinnati's Ball at the start of the next play for a Penalty Kick Attempt."
The penalty for Tijuana in my opinion probably shouldn’t have happened. If you look closely, the ball looks as if it touched his arm, and he was running for the ball so it most likely wouldn’t be natural position. Although maybe the foul was fully committed milliseconds before the possible handball, or it wasn’t a handball.
Neither penalty in that game was for a handball. Philadelphia's PK was for a push in the back. Tijuana's PK was for the high boot that made contact with the opponent. Both were on the edge of the box so the major question was whether they were inside or outside the box.
Re the offside in NYC vs ATS: go read IFAB Circular 26 on offside interpretation to see why this got called. (From last summer!) It's uh... hard to judge in some cases.
That says that the offensive player is onside if the ball comes off the defender making a 'deliberate 'play on the ball... The defender knew where the ball was coming from and deliberately went to challenge the ball in the air... Onside!
@@PyroGamie I feel challenged to know what is correct in every situation. I am a referee (HS, college). I've read the circular, I've been to presentations about how to interpret the law. I've watched IFABs training examples many times. It's just confusing in some situations. Here, of the officials judged that the defender was instinctively reacting to block a pass, then the play will be offside. If they judge that the defender had time, space, and a clear line of sight to make a controlled play for the ball, then the call should be NOT offside. Here I can see both arguments getting made. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I’ll admit I’m a Dynamo fan, first and foremost. What are you looking at?! That’s definitely a foul and definitely a penalty! The Orlando player’s leg clips Dorsey’s leg and trips him. It’s not a hard foul, and Dorsey probably could’ve stayed on his feet, but it’s a foul. No question about it.
@@MrCho14 First I should briefly mention my credibility: I have been a semi-competitive referee since 2015 and I am the head referee at a large football club in Canada. My apologies for the rant but these are my opinions and interpretations of the highlights. With that being said here's where I disagree with Andrew's perceptions of the rules: 01:14 the foul did not happen in the box or on the line. Pausing at roughly 01:17 you can see the arm on the attackers back is clearly about 0.5 meters off of the line. 02:51 since the defender made a genuine attempt to play the ball, the DOGSO call is "Downgraded" to a yellow card, as per the IFAB Laws of the Game page 107. The red card is the wrong decision 04:51 The NYCFC attacker is considered offside because the second contact on the ball (when two players challenged for it) is inconclusive. Since the player was offside on the initial pass, and the second contact (if any) is inconclusive, the decision is offside. In my opinion the defender made the contact with the ball while under pressure, which in this case would not qualify as a deliberate attempt on the ball with it accidentally going to the goal-scorer. If the defender was uncontested and the ball went backwards accidentally, then I would argue the goal-scorer is onside because the "starting frame" would be reset (the second freeze frame MLS shows at 05:01). 06:47 I'll give Andrew some credit, the Houston penalty should've never been called. That's clear simulation. 07:11 this is not a penalty. There is no conclusive evidence that the defender tripped the attacker. All in all, I would prefer if someone with credibility narrated this show. Otherwise it's just the same as TV pundits or commentators discussing rules that they don't 100% understand.
@@JonD00 All good on your credentials. I hung the whistle up a long time ago but continue to try to stay current in my knowledge. I honesty was curious why you think he has no credibility. I agree that he often gets reasoning wrong, but even when Unkel has been on she does as well sometimes. As for the detailed reasons, I think there's a lot of judgment there. I also question your law application of DOGSO. For the first one: I see at 1:11 the defender's foot on the PA line, his arm is at least even with that foot and is on the back of the attacker. In the end, it's a judgement call. Andrew decided it was in the area. Still, a judgment call. Personally, I think close enough that VAR probably shouldn't have been involved. (That's without seeing potentially other angles of other contact. This show often does not show all of them. I wouldn't expect PRO to put out an Inside Video Review segment for League Play where we'd see it better.) Second (DOGSO): Agree that a play on the ball was made, but it was outside the penalty area. Law 12 states that DOGSO is only 'downgraded' if an attempt to play the ball was made AND it was inside the PA. In all other circumstances.....the player must be sent off. NYCFC offside: The call was no offside on the field. Andrew has it mostly correct in that the last touch is what matters. He believes and constructs his story with the belief the attacker flicked that ball on or at least touched it. Given how the call was made on the field, I don't believe there is enough evidence to overturn. The video we are shown here is certainly not clear enough. Jumping to the last one, I couldn't tell if that was called a PK on the field, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't. If it was, the CR didn't make it an obvious call. That said, if this was not called on the field, then I agree that it is difficult, at best, to say there was a clear error for which VAR should have recommended a review. Andrew gave his opinion the defender did hit the attacker's heal. If that's the case, then a PK is the right call. I'm with you that I don't see anything clear here. As such it's a bad judgment by Andrew but no misapplication of the laws. It's funny about getting a real referee to do this. That was done. The comment section felt no better about the conclusions. Andrew is rough in how he explains things which doesn't help his case though.

@@th3awak3ning10 That's crazy and not within the laws of the game. A simple push which results in the opponent going psycho is still a simple push. In this case, a yellow for Cincy and a red for the idiot headbutter is clearly the correct call. That red should also be a 3 games suspension.
Great video! These are great angles. It helps out all upcoming refs to look at the good calls and bad calls.
Take the commentary in carefully. The analysis is better than before, but it often missing key points.
Yeah that too. Hopefully the future refs can use their judgment. Not everything this guy says will be right.
@@juliooo_perez And as much as it's easy to bash him when you don't agree with what he says, so much of it is judgment. That's where referees can and do differ in their opinion of calls. It's the places where the analysis misses something and/or explains something not quite right which can cause problems.
As a dynamo fan that's not a pen tbh but i was happy for bassi goal tho
VAR was from Mexico. It's much easier to get the call wrong on the field than staring at all those camera angles.
Rigged mls cup for the mls
Clearly Leagues Cup favors MLS teams, lots of those calls were questionable and very much in favor of one side.
Thank you for calling out those orl-hou refs, horrid call.
For the NYC off side call, the ref must have determined that NYC #6 did not touch the ball, and that the deflection came from Atlas #2. If that is the case, then the moment of decision is when NYC #10 played the ball into the box.
That would be the case if the ball deflected off the atlas guy. However, it was a deliberate header, meaning that Justin was actually onside
That would be up to interpretation so why would VAR come into play? Unless VAR determined otherwise
@6:47 it's Wiebe's trademarked foot drag! no penalty!
Second red for tj was crazy. All things considered that was a red, he clearly gets the ball but it’s the mls.
Aside from one of the teams, what was MLS about it? The ref was from Jamaica and both VAR and Asst. VAR were from Mexico.
Great game
Hi I like watching MLS
I think Jesus and Westwood are lucky to stay on the Pitch both make contact with the neck for me it’s a red card a piece
Nycfc was robbed on that one
only reason he out stretches is cause striker sold it lmao
KC's 1pt prize-------> 🎻
Great game🎉🎉🎉
Also the revolution getting robbed AGAIN the Red Bulls player is arms stretched out and it hits is arm in the box and no penalty this deserved a spot in here
its funny how all sudden gringos are experts on futbol. theyre playing in their territory with their refs 😂😂and still complaint😂😂
1:22 Nah, that was outside
5:02 Ball didn't hit the guy in blue. So it is Offside.
Neither are clear and obvious errors by the crew on the field. Plays should have stood as called.
Another week, another VAR official sitting behind the screen and deciding “I am going to ruin this match”. Par for the course this season in MLS matches.
You do know these aren't MLS matches nor PRO/MLS referees, right?
@@MrCho14 sure do, doesn’t matter who’s assigning, same errors are happening.
He’s definitely not biased at all 😂 I get you work for mls but don’t be blinded by it. If it favors the mls teams it’s clear but if it favors MX teams it’s questionable. You’re funny
This has nothing to do with MLS vs Mexico. His analysis is very consistent with his inconsistency week to week with just MLS teams.
@@MrCho14 re watch it and look for what I’m talking about.
"PK"?! FFS!!!!! It's PENALTY KICK!!!!!
"REDSO"?! STOP IT!!!!!!!!
MLS finally has exposure and this is the level theyre putting out. horrible
What level are you referring to? They are ahead on the pitch. The referees aren't MLS/PRO referees. I'm highly confused by your comment.
Bro the foul in the red for Tijuana started outside so it shouldn't have been a penalty but yhey want MLS to win so badly.
Kinda biased commentary, mate
The Philadelphia union and Xolos game was clearly affected by the ref, this commentator so biased lmao
man NYCFC got robbed
saying well done to the ref for the skc vs fcc game is just incorrect. i was there and he was unbelievably inconsistent and missed a handball entirely because he wasn't even looking at the play
Thats on
I swear the refs always make awful calls against Orlando
Given these aren't the same referees, maybe it's just your purple glasses.
At 3:40 mark, thats targeting! Lol
NFL Refree in a MLS Game: "They will be 2 Fouls for both Cincinnati and Kansas City which will be enforced. Personal Foul, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, Number 9 of Kansas City for Headbutt Targeting against an Opponent with Excessive Force. Personal foul, Unnecessary Roughness, Number 15 of Cincinnati.
Parecen los partidos del ascenso de Argentina: se cagan a piñas. Conurbano a full.
What a mess.
Both were on the edge of the box so the major question was whether they were inside or outside the box.
is it really that bad.?
You must be a huge MLS fan 😂😂
Thank you for the full meal. It was tasty.
Ayo?
Hella on mls side
MLS still has a long way to go in quality
I’ll admit I’m a Dynamo fan, first and foremost.
What are you looking at?! That’s definitely a foul and definitely a penalty! The Orlando player’s leg clips Dorsey’s leg and trips him. It’s not a hard foul, and Dorsey probably could’ve stayed on his feet, but it’s a foul. No question about it.
Andrew has genuinly no referee crebibility. At least hire someone who knows the rules
I agree with the first part, but can you give an example of where he got a 'rule' wrong?
Maybe he got a grassroots license once when he needed a summer job lol
@@MrCho14 First I should briefly mention my credibility: I have been a semi-competitive referee since 2015 and I am the head referee at a large football club in Canada. My apologies for the rant but these are my opinions and interpretations of the highlights. With that being said here's where I disagree with Andrew's perceptions of the rules:
01:14 the foul did not happen in the box or on the line.
The red card is the wrong decision
04:51 The NYCFC attacker is considered offside because the second contact on the ball (when two players challenged for it) is inconclusive.
I wouldn't expect PRO to put out an Inside Video Review segment for League Play where we'd see it better.)
Second (DOGSO): Agree that a play on the ball was made, but it was outside the penalty area.
@@MrCho14 I enjoyed reading your point of view on the video, you make some very valid points! Until we meet again Mr Cho :)
This tournament is a joke and rigged against liga mx you’ve missed so many recaps where it’s a clear robbery
Hands on neck =instant Red card...
Don't understand the Refs call on this...
(Especially to the Captian for Charlotte Fc)
So proud of Charlotte Fc !!!💪🏼👑
For the Crown 🖤🤍💙👑👑👑
Obviously they are going to give opinions that don't affect the mls, in my opinion both plays aren't red cards for xolos and of course there was a pull but outside the area, the other play was in contact with the ball, the referee stole the game in favor of Philadelphia, Xolos dominate the game with 10 men.
Not sure what game you were watching, but Philadelphia had 17 shots on goal so hard to say Xolos dominated. Credit to their keepers for keeping them in the game.
@@andymuenz7499 did You watch the game? Because Xolos dominate the Game with 10 players they almost tie the game, then the referee show the red card to Balanta, come on
@@andymuenz7499 11 Philadelphia vs 9 of xolos, really?
@@danilitr0 I was at the game, so yes, I watched it. Tijuana starting keeper was best player on the field. Without him it would have been about 10-1 instead of 3-1. Not sure what they showed on television, but Philly was the dominant team even before the red cards.
@@andymuenz7499 xolos almost tied the Game with 10 players, failed the penalty, but during that time have the control of the Game until the second red card
Leagues Cup, aka "we really don't care" month. Clubs, players...it's a made-up tournament, the only games 99% of viewers will watch will be Messi games, and the worst penalty is that you don't have to play the full tournament.
I don't see the issue with the leagues cup. The US v Mexico rivalries are always fun plus there are rivalries within each league as well. I just think it's silly to pause the league. Especially if the intention is to create a more competitive schedule compared to euro leagues. Should have had MLS games on the weekend and leagues cup during the week.
What a disgrace. All these penalties have ruined the game and cup. Some valid but its all BS.
Which soccer Americanism is more cringe: "Thats a peekay!" or feeling any type of need to use the term DOGSO?
What's more cringe: "getting annoyed about pronouncing an initialism" or "getting annoyed about pronouncing an acronym"? They're both pretty silly, in my book. Tell me you're bad at English without telling me you're bad at English.
