It's nice to see you actually realizing the negative repercussions Workshop can have, especially a few years into a thriving modding scene. I understand that some games, like The Sims (I had to help my gf set up mods for that game, and its pretty much a scavenger hunt to find mods) have a modding scene that is already all over the place with no hub or tools that are considered the norm, and for games like that, it makes sense for a studio to create their own hub/tools or simply use workshop. But I can't tell you how many time's i've had to use crazy tools to get wokshop mod files and use them in games I own on platforms other than steam. It's a nightmare getting some of these to work. I feel like workshop works for games when they start in Steam, but this late in the game will only make it easier for an average person who isn't savvy to getting and installing 3rd party mods. But I think Satisfactory players are problem solvers lol, so those of us who want mods are already modding
Thanks Coffee Stain for helping the modding community work so well! Other developers are a hindrance rather than a ally and get a lot less love because of it.
Honestly the best community manager I’ve ever seen not gonna lie man satisfactory is a good game not only because it’s a fun game but because your company is so good with customers and interacting with us and being open about it.
Can I just say the open, honest communication about what's down the pipe and whats being discussed in studio is incredible. If only more studios would have people talking to the community and supporting the interactions with them rather than recoiling in shame of the endless sewage that comes out of triple A.
played satisfactory for about 2 years now but only today found their yt channel through the update 5 video. gotta say its rly great to see how much the community means ro coffee stain studios and that they seemingly rly care about the community and interact
Hey Jace! Another question popped into my head as I was watching this - say that you see a mod which does something incredible and you want to take that idea and implement it into the game. One: Would you approach the modder and say, hey this is a great idea we wanna implement it into the game. Two: Would you give the modder some kind of compensation for the work they have put in? This might be a complex question to answer in text, but I think it would be interesting to see your approach. Anyway, I love this channel the community feedback is actually kinda awesome, keep up the good work!
Its awesome the way you guys manage all the satisfactory stuff, in all aspects, i dont think that any other company would manage this as you do, love you guys
Its kinda funny, that most of what you said does not apply to mods in/for satisfactory, but does apply to modding as such for every game, and i do like the fact that you guys are very aware of the natrual boundries of modded and built-in content is and should be in the future.
You guys are flat awesome, point-blank. I know Valheim isn't done by you guys directly, but just seeing your name behind it made it an easy buy and much loved. Satisfactory is one of the very few titles that never leave my drive and a daily play for me. My daughter just started playing pc games on her own system and Satisfactory was the first title that she requested.
I got to say, the way you're promoting and handling mods is amazing. It just adds infinite possibility to the game and everyone can play the game as they see fit, great to see
meanwhile in dbd devs office: A: Yo, ppl say that our game has shitton of bugs and that the spirit is too strong, are we gona do something with it? B: Nah, look at this new cosmetics that u cant even much with other ones bc its locked pack for only 15$, isnt it so cool? It's just so nice to see that u guys listen to community and actually use a feedback from us, while some studios just dont give a fck and put anything they want into game without even properly testing it out.
This is why I love SF and this studio in general. "we love our modding community and totally support them! They make great things for our game that we love"

I love the support Coffee Stain have for the modding community. Most devs would never promote unofficial modding, so massive respect to you guys for doing that.
Modding is the only way to preserve a game alive for decades, greedy companies like EA only care about selling a "new" game annually or ASAP it doesn't matter if it was a good game because if it really bad they will sell a new one soon. People is stupid enough to keep buying call of duty or battle field games cause they were good once upon a time...

I prefer games (and devs) that officially and directly support mods. Like, say… Factorio. To be honnest, i feel more involve in Jayce's videos than in my homework, even if its computer science and that i love computer science. You have a way to include people, to make them feel like individuals of a community, and to make that community feel like a living part of the game. Continue like that !!
I really appreciate this level of explanation. Very clear, very direct and very helpful. as an older gamer, engineer and professional i enjoyed your explanations without the snarky wit, which does have a place at times. thanks and keep up the great work with Satisfactory

I'd like to give the entire modding community a very big 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 you have greatly improved my experience with Satisfactory! The Mod Manager is awesome and one of the best I've ever seen implimented in a game. I personally use a dozen or so mods that have transformed the game for me into a much better experience. Especially, given how vertically challenging the game is! I got to the point after about 6 weeks of playing the vanilla game of 'Nah, enough of this!'. I'd have quit without them.
I love this explanation for everything I am so glad you guys are into the mod community and support them. I also like not adding steam workshop support. I play on steam but, I use the Satisfactory mod manager for everything and i love it.
Ever since I first launched Satisfactory through the *amazing* Epic launcher, (which I'm still salty about) I was amazed by how polished the game is. When I see the Early Access, I'm conditioned to expect the worst. You guys are definitely the exception. The UI in particular is something Steve Jobs would have been proud of. While I don't like the fact that Satisfactory updates are taking longer than I'd like and changes are relatively minor in most cases, the consistency and polish is always there which matters to me more than just a bunch of half baked ideas thrown together. We have the modding community for that :) Keep being awesome!
Modding is such an interesting vector for player feedback. Like, if x% of players use a Creative Mode mod, that can communicate to the devs the relative level of demand a creative mode has on the product, even though Jace has already mentioned previously about implementing that later. I have a few years exp doing user research on AAA but it was always on VC or Alpha/pre-beta and confidential projects so we had to depend on on-site volunteer testing. I would have LOVED to work in a semi-live environment with the number of "power users" already filling their needs via mods. Thanks for your work Jace
Kinda good to hear that you guys are cool with people changing your game in one way or another. Myself, the vanilla game is great especially this update 6 that released but without mods, I probably would have called it quits after the first or second playthrough. The nice thing I like about mods is if you have a specific problem or just a feature of the game you dont care to deal with multiple times, there is usually a solution for it via mods. The base game is pretty damn good but for me, I dont really care for night time so I run the always daytime mod. There are a few others i use but most of mine are more or less quality of life mods to just take some of the monotonous work out of the game from the start. The one that I honestly think should be in the base game is having a way to feed the biomass burners with belts. I get that they are meant to be used early game and is supposed to be a chore to feed but I can say that I used biomass burners with the mod that makes them able to be belted into and my god was that nice to have early game. The whole idea of this game is to automate everything but that is one of the few things in the game that literally has to be taken care of 100% by you. You should still have to collect the leaves and wood to make the biomass but it makes a world of difference when you can just mass harvest it and throw it into a storage bin and its a steady feed of power. I even did 1 playthrough where I went straight from biomass burners to fuel and skipped coal all together due to being able to keep them fed automatically while you are off building and advancing in the game. Ive been playing this since the night it launched and have almost 1000 hours on it with 90% of it being super enjoyable. Feels good to buy a game that never really gets old. Keep up the great work guys!

I'd say most of Refined Power deserves to be implemented into the game in some way. As much as I like deforesting the entire planet, it does make sense to use renewable energy in some capacity.
The entire point of satisfactory is to strip the planet dry by mining all the ore, producing insane pollution through machinery, and harvesting all of the wildlife and plants for any resources you can use. Implementing renewable energy kind of flies in the face of the entire game concept
@@QactisX I think it'd be nice to choose between two style of gameplays. 1. Production at whatever cost. 2. Production while being a "good person" by not destroying the planet.

because factorio can be also purchased non-steam, honestly I think this is the better choice a game can make (set up own modding platform instead of using steam workshop), as it opens up new possibilities for you. I get that it's time consuming and not worth for some games, but locking your game to one vendor is almost never a good idea.

Biggest difference is that Factorio also *directly* supports mods. The trick is to basically write the game as a kind of mod itself, that leads to an incredibly powerful modding system. Without code injection trickery.
There is a 'shared save files cloud' mod where you and a group of friends can basically have a save game and whomever wants to can start being the host. The save files are synced and you basically just join whomever is the host at that time. Can easily be done with dropbox and keeping in contact with each other though, but it could be a nice way to be able to play even if your friends are offline. Haven't tried it myself though.
There actually is a sort of headless server mod developed. But it works just like normal multiplayer.... not that good. Issue is, its just a mod, and the Server itself is still using up one of the possible player connections.
they said they don't want to give tools to quickly build tons of stuff, as then the large builds would get much less impressive, but I'm not sure if that reasoning still stands to this day.
You can just place the mod tool on steam as a downloadable tool for satisfactory; it connects the tool to the steam without relying on the workshop. Which makes the tool the standard modding place. Of course taking this decision now means you're now also responsible for helping out. So with all the effort you guys've been putting into the game it's pretty understandable to postpone the decision. But ya know, just an observation
I love and hate mods. I love them when they work...hate them when they turn my game into a crashy mess. Right now it's in a crashy mess state. When I get some time I'll work on diagnosing it. Time is in short supply right now. Love you guys for supporting the unofficial mod community in the way you do.
Mods should be seen as a self-made extension of the game. Who has played the game through and cannot keep his fingers off it. He can embark on a journey into mod history. But you should be prepared for the fact that you can no longer use the map during an update. But still, it doesn't depend on the mods, but on the game itself. And thank you CoffestainStudio for this incredible game. HamisTV
i appreciate when companies approve of modding communities, plus mods help the developers themselves think of ideas! for example the minecraft ender chest was originally a mod so i'm really happy you guys acknowledge and support the modding community
I love satisfactory and one thing I would love to see are inserters, a thing that can take items from a belt and put it into a building(not just a splitter or merger). Factorio has them, Dyson Sphere Program has them and I think satisfactory should too, that would be great. It's just another item for someone to use however they want, but at least they would have the option. Food for thought! =))))
I saw the modding options in the first release and thought it was too clunky and awkward to bother with, but after this video I looked up the current mods and they seem to be super easy to install and are actually decent!
Just wanted to say thanks for these updates. The videos are great, and the game is one of my favorites already. I'm really excited about the future of it.
If Minecraft and Factorio had a baby togeher that would be Satisfactory. And not only you guys took the best from both of them but did that with style and in a best possible way. Thank you guys for such an amazing game and also for allowing us modders do what we do and having the time of our life doing that.
I gotta say there were very convincing arguments made, and it cleared out a lot of questions. However, I wish there could be a sort of Road Map with the ideas that are coming (and the ones Coffee Stain rejects or recycles) so modders and players can see what is coming and decide if it is moddable or we wait for the base game to have them. Love the game, love the mods, there are some mods that are basic to me and I had to wait until they were fixed.
I cant be the only one who thinks that 80% of the things you've said in this video are common sense... Really the only two things we like to hear from game developers is 1. They support mods and welcome them into the game. 2. They back up that statement with making the game easier to mod while in development. Thanks for all the work you guys do over there at Coffee Stain. It's a shame that open communication like this is not the norm for the industry.
Plot twist, they’re just telling us that they “thought” of all the mod ideas first so they have an excuse to add them without being accused of stealing from the community.
Praises modders showcases and hosts them and send traffic their way....Something so simple and easy yet it vastly improves the experience of consumers, modders feel more appreciated and motivated to create, increasing the longevity of their game thus their revenue. It's an endless cycle.
I LOVE the game! I do have one suggestion - make it easier to create larger floors without 1 tile at a time (similar to Area Actions - tho trying to figure out how to use it *lol). I have arthritis and laying hundreds of tiles over and over is very hard on my wrist and hand.
I second the use of Smart!; way, WAY easier for this than Area Actions. Both have their place, but placing multiple foundations (or machines) is definitely something Smart! is a lot better suited for. Point the build tool, click+hold to start placing, use your mouse wheel while holding Shift, Alt or Shift+Alt together, and place dozens (or hundreds) of foundations (or assemblers, or....) with ease :)
I just wanted to say one thing; with steam workshop, no matter which way you go the community is fragmented due to Ge-Force, I know you said one time that modding there is impossible, but it's not, you would need steam worship support, and it would be perfect, so I have one question for you guys over at coffee stain; do you want one community to have an advantage, or leave one of the 3 with a disadvantage? because thanks to Ge-Force, you can't have an even experience.
Coffee stain is a lenged. I played goat simulator when I was 5 and I will never stop playing it. Coffee stain is my hero and there games are amazing. U are hard working people and I wish the best of u. Ur games are epic and will never get bored. keep doing what ur doing. ✋👍
What about supporting mods that support mods? So we can have mods of mods of mods... Mods, mods, mods, mods Quality mods! (Monty python song in background) 😄
One of my Favorite mods is the "Decorations mod" - Adding plants and flowers to my base to make it beautiful is awesome. If you could just add that as part of the game that would be great!
This is a question that I always wanted to ask: Are you ever going to implement a creative mode type of thing? It would be nice to be able to plan out a factory in creative and then be able to know how to make it and know which materials to get in the regular mode because you already made it in the creative. Or to be able to test something in the creative that you don’t want to do in the regular mode because it would use stuff that you don’t want to risk in the regular mode. Btw sorry for saying “regular” and “creative” so many times, it was the only way I could phrase it :)
that mod manager is actually so easily all you do is download it name your pack of mods download the mods click blank it just works the moment you download it
The information about the new biome should look like this - the EVA says: Attention! Meteor Swarm Detected! The impact will come in 2 years. Take your factory elsewhere :)
But if fixit can put people on other planets, bags have dimensional space storage, and building gun that can build things from ‘thin air’ then they could stop a meteor. :p
Jace, you're an excellent community manager. I like your videos, you're very entertaining yet informative. Obsidian could learn some things from you. Theirs is so cringe I gave up on Grounded.
Thanks for the explanation. Players aren't developers, so it's important to clarify these things. Many of the points you brought up aren't really that obvious.
Not only do Mods add to quality of life for a game like satisfactory, they also extend the lifespan of a game and expands a potential player base. It would be detrimental to yours or any other game to turn your back on Modders.
Biggest Problem wourld be to get access to the mod ,,steam workshop´´ is that when bought it on epic. Steam will just tell you to buy again on their side even when you account is connected
Quality? Stability? I bought the game the day it became available on Epic. I play on Experimental, and have seen the game not function, but overall it's been awesome for both of those. I also tend to start from scratch on each update to see how things have changed, because I find the initial gameplay to be quite fun.
you all could do a thing where the unofficial modding thing can become official, like terraria and tmodloader did, and at this point, your team has done the right steps for it to happen
I did like a silo storage mod I'd seen a certain player use, because it just made sense! Especially when you consider nuclear waste in the game, & now another radioactive waste too! I don't remember if the mod protected against radiation, or not, but it should! Until you access the storage!!! Not sure if Coffee Stain thought about this type of storage before (not a mind reader), but I think it's one they should consider! Now that there's 2 types of nuclear waste in the game!!!
the modding community has put emphasis on so many quality of life things that sometimes we forget that this is a game with a story and a world that the devs are trying to flesh out and finish on top of making the game refined and more ease to use features.

I got to say, the way you're promoting and handling mods is amazing. It just adds infinite possibility to the game and everyone can play the game as they see fit, great to see
meanwhile in dbd devs office:
A: Yo, ppl say that our game has shitton of bugs and that the spirit is too strong, are we gona do something with it?
B: Nah, look at this new cosmetics that u cant even much with other ones bc its locked pack for only 15$, isnt it so cool?
It's just so nice to see that u guys listen to community and actually use a feedback from us, while some studios just dont give a fck and put anything they want into game without even properly testing it out.
People: "Hey! Your only gamemode sucks!"
dbd devs: "Nah, fuck it. Lets just add another killer and totally not needed map rework because why not."
This is why I love SF and this studio in general. "we love our modding community and totally support them! They make great things for our game that we love"
man the more i learn about the development process and the game itself the more i love it please never stop developing this game is already a masterpiece in my eyes your work is greatly appreciated
And that's also a good counter-argument for CS' "we plan [or think about] to support mods officially later": you put in modding *right from the start* or it will be completely weaksauce / still depend on some "mod loader" BS.
Man this has to be the best game / developping team / community management I have ever seen... The game is incredibly fun, mods are incredibly fun, and we get news from Coffee Stain Studio themselves! Keep it going guys, this game is gonna be huge in a few years

We have the modding community for that :)
Keep being awesome!
a dev that likes and supports modders, is like a refreshing beer on the hottest day of the year. soooo good.

Coal, Oil and Nuclear are all renewable (in game, duh)
*Chainsaw Noises*
The entire point of satisfactory is to strip the planet dry by mining all the ore, producing insane pollution through machinery, and harvesting all of the wildlife and plants for any resources you can use. Implementing renewable energy kind of flies in the face of the entire game concept

Funny how Factorio has a similar, non steam workshop based modding infrastructure too
because factorio can be also purchased non-steam, honestly I think this is the better choice a game can make (set up own modding platform instead of using steam workshop), as it opens up new possibilities for you.
(sarcasm warning)
Imagine a "Dedicated-Server-Mod" :D That would be lovely
There is a 'shared save files cloud' mod where you and a group of friends can basically have a save game and whomever wants to can start being the host. The save files are synced and you basically just join whomever is the host at that time. Can easily be done with dropbox and keeping in contact with each other though, but it could be a nice way to be able to play even if your friends are offline. Haven't tried it myself though.
@@Brad25King it works relativly well me and my friends have been using it whilst waiting on dedicated servers
There actually is a sort of headless server mod developed. But it works just like normal multiplayer.... not that good.
Issue is, its just a mod, and the Server itself is still using up one of the possible player connections.
Please add the Smart mod into the core game. 🙏
Being able to quickly build platforms and building with auto connecting belts is a godsend.
Smart needs to be worked on more before being added into the game itself. It has issues especially when trying to deal with pipes.
@@OrangeRocks1986 No issues there - the pipes are just not supported.
Thx
I believe they already mentioned they are planning on changing the build system in update 5.
they said they don't want to give tools to quickly build tons of stuff, as then the large builds would get much less impressive, but I'm not sure if that reasoning still stands to this day.

Great video. The modding discord is amazing guys! :)
i appreciate when companies approve of modding communities, plus mods help the developers themselves think of ideas! for example the minecraft ender chest was originally a mod

I'm really excited about the future of it.
love to see devs supporting mods
The responsibility discussion was well said as stuff I generally all knew but never parsed into one cohesive thought, so thanks for laying that out.
If Minecraft and Factorio had a baby togeher that would be Satisfactory. And not only you guys took the best from both of them but did that with style and in a best possible way. Thank you guys for such an amazing game and also for allowing us modders do what we do and having the time of our life doing that.
Hahahaha. No, not by a long shot.
0:01 TRIGGERED!
Praises modders showcases and hosts them and send traffic their way....Something so simple and easy yet it vastly improves the experience of consumers, modders feel more appreciated and motivated to create, increasing the longevity of their game thus their revenue. It's an endless cycle.

Its nice when devs don't have official mod support, but plan to add it and still support the unofficial modding community
I LOVE the game!
I do have one suggestion - make it easier to create larger floors without 1 tile at a time (similar to Area Actions - tho trying to figure out how to use it *lol). I have arthritis and laying hundreds of tiles over and over is very hard on my wrist and hand.
Use the smart mod makes floors easy

I also tend to start from scratch on each update to see how things have changed, because I find the initial gameplay to be quite fun.
you all could do a thing where the unofficial modding thing can become official, like terraria and tmodloader did, and at this point, your team has done the right steps for it to happen
thanks for supporting unofficial modding rather than coming down with copyright cases and other such nonsense!
A healthy outlook that I wish most companies had.
Now that there's 2 types of nuclear waste in the game!!!
glad to hear your working with modders and are not interested in the steam workshop
Is Coffee Stain Studio at all related to Take-Two interactive?
No.
You're good, modding community!
the modding community has put emphasis on so many quality of life things that sometimes we forget that this is a game with a story and a world that the devs are trying to flesh out and finish on top of making the game refined and more ease to use features.
