Makes me miss my tropical home. We used to have this growing up, stir fried with fried fish and coconut milk!
Sounds delicious!
When he started chopping the bamboo.. 😱😱😱
He's got to learn how to cut properly
I'm not too worried, I save cleaner cuts for later
You have to boil bamboo for about 30 minutes to deactivate the poison in it. My friends pour off the boil water and then stir fry/saute with Nepali dahl(bean curry) spices. It is divine. They don't throw that top part away. They use everything that is tender. Every year we scavenge shoots from renegade bamboo around town (in NC).
Good to know, I need to cook with it more often
Bamboo is so versatile. Love the knowledge 🤙
Fascinating!
Mahalo for taking care of Aina
I like the thought of keeping native woods around. Good idea! (:
Definitely
Interesting! Mahalo's brah!
All the Chickens 🐓 is music to my ears
You are so lucky you get to eat fresh bamboo shoot. Bamboo shoot can be cook in many different way and it make great soup.
Yes. It is so nice to have such great foods growing.
Good vid. Thanks dude 🤙🏼
Thanks for watching!
Yes for SURE!! Keep the trees. It is sad when they clearcut.
Thank you very much! You make very useful content. I'm watching you from Russia. Bamboo grows here and even survives frosts of -35 Celsius or -31 Fahrenheit.
Bamboo has a wide range. Thanks for watching from Russia. Hope to visit one day
Wish I could plant Ohia on my property,, I’m on mainland 🥰🤙🏽
Here in Costa Rica, you cannot chop down the native trees - in fact you need a permit to cut down any indigenous trees or shrubs on your property - you will be sent to jail. It is that serious. That way people cannot denude the forest here and sell off the wood.
That's great. People clear cut all the time here, more like bulldoze and do nothing with the wood
That's fantastic information, there are some huge stands of bamboo near where I live!
Get harvesting then!
Be careful though. Not all species of bamboo is editable.
@@shrimuyopa8117 I'm not eating it, I'm drying it on racks to burn in my rocket stove.
I’ve been wondering if I could add bamboo to my recipes. My neighbor has bamboo planted along the fence and new growth pops up in my yard. I’ve been breaking them off and feeding to the squirrels. They love it. We’re in Alabama so I wasn’t sure if our location or only certain types of bamboo were edible like mushrooms. Thanks for sharing your video.
Most species are edible so cook it up and see how it tastes, it'll let you know if you can eat it or not
Hola! Meat video, thanks!
So crazy that people that choose to live in such a delicate and off grid area decide to wipe out indiscriminately the growth on new property. Doesn't make sense to me at all, so glad you have the mindset to preserve native life
Hi , I enjoy learning about bamboo. Have a question about the roots of bamboo, do they go everywhere and sprout out where you don’t want them. I farm but I have a problem with ground erosion. Thinking about planting along edge to prevent continued erosion. But don’t want to worry about finding shouts sprouting out in the land I farm. Please give me your info. Thank you.
There are 2 types, running bamboo and clumping bamboo. Plant the clumping
Reminds me of artichokes.
Totally. Really big artichokes or asparagus
The giant pandas and red pandas also like to eat bamboo too!
We’re just like them!
They like to eat bamboo but we like to eat bamboo shoot. That is two different things.
Mahalo Nui Loa, 🥰💞🤙🏽
I didn’t know you can eat bamboo , hi from the uk
Its a great food source. Aloha uk
@@HomesteadinHawaii yeah , what’s it like living In Hawaii it’s my dream to visit one day . It looks really beautiful there
You should soak! High levels cyanide in new shoots, you can filter it out with a 24-48 cold water soak
Thanks for the tip, probably explains why the taste was a little off
We eat it raw too, we never knew about cyanide or thing like that, it is not danger to human if you eat alot, i never knew anyone complaining about cyanide
No necessary. Cooking properly destroys the cyanide. Our traditional dish talabaw we slice very thin and add directly to soup. We cook for at least an hour.
What kind of bamboo shoot is good to eat
Most are great. There’s a variety called sweet bamboo that people love though
Does bamboo variety matter?
I have golden bamboo , I think? It's yellow with very few green vertical stripes.
All the "how to ____ bamboo" videos do not seem to work with my strain here in Florida. Like the air growing, and propagating techniques. I've never seen and culms start to shoot roots off. But I get a lot of shoots coming from the ground. I use the fallen leaves as part of my "HuManure" and garden bedding. I also chop/crush them leaves into a fine powder that I mix with water and grill/fire ash to feed my cannabis and hemp, and it's great for that.
But all in all, bamboo just doesn't want to grow, and I'm unsure if I can eat it. Anyone know about this strain?
You can try it and see how it tastes. Tough and bitter? No good
Your bamboo is a phylostachys family ,it's a runing bamboo , air layering and bamboo from cutings are only for tropical clumping bamboos as ones on the video , and hell yes , your new shoots are more tasty and good to eat ,enjoy.
Can you use any kine of bamboo?
Not every species is edible. Iʻd suggest to harvest and see how it tastes
Can you eat all types of the bamboo species?
No. Some are no good for eating. That would be a good blog post though, covering all of the edible species
@@HomesteadinHawaii thanks for your quick reply. I have just discovered your bamboo videos, very good, well explained, thanks.
I was looking to find the right *soil condition to grow bamboo.
Rich soil with lots of mulch
I love you brother
That is very nice of you, thanks
@@HomesteadinHawaii you're welcome brother
I was today years old when I realized bamboo is food for people. I thought just Pandas ate them. 💀 But now that I'm thinking about it. I knew bamboo shoots are a thing, I just never imagined it was actually bamboo. I thought it was just a name for them.
I used to think that growing up too, but then I went to asia and they eat it everywhere. So much more food out there than we are led to believe
@@HomesteadinHawaii Lol it's honestly wild what people eat, like chocolate covered crickets and what not. I wanna go to Japan and just try their street food though. Might stay away from anything with bugs though. 😂
what kind of bamboo is this?
Bambusa oldhamii
Is that Giant Burmese Bamboo?
Bambusa oldhamii
@@HomesteadinHawaii Thank you
So sad and sickening to me what people are doing to this planet 🌎 ppl go to jail for rape. And yet raping the land is completely legal😥 Bless you for keeping native plants and trees💕
Twisted world we got here, We each have the power to live in integrity though.
We have all the bamboo you want in New River, VA. Come help yourself.
Ahh, just a bit too far. Mahalo for the offer 😀
Bamboo is for pandas I drink beer
You can drink beer out of a bamboo cup then
I hate seeing how people move here because they “love Hawai’i” then bulldoze everything and cover it with concrete to make it look like where they came from… disgusting. Mahalo nui loa for mentioning the devastation that development has on these islands.
It happens everywhere, but Iʻd say the worst culprits are the mega resorts, letʻs put blame on them first.
We need to save forests and stop the greed or the world will be doomed.
Agreed
Im sorry, your home isnt in the "woods"
Technically, my spot is located right next to a forest reserve, everywhere was Ohia, until the last 5-8 years or so.
Video starts at like 7 minutes. Save yourselves from the bullshit.
Thanks. I’m working on making them more to the point
