Don't understand why people say swiss army knives aren't good survival knives. Well maybe those who say swiss army knives suck don't have the skills to use the natural resources around them and processes them correctly ! A coal in seconds ! With a good tinder bundle/birds nest you have fire without the use of a ferro rod or lighter ! Minimal calories spent . Utilized a natural resource ! Perfectly executed ! Great job Dave !
I have that same exact swiss army knife, my Dad gave it me many years ago and I've used it almost everyday since then and its still going strong. I don't leave home without it.
Ah the swisschamp, the pinnacle of Swiss engineering in my opinion!! I have a champ that I carry from time to time but my favourite is the fieldmaster (huntsman with phillips screwdriver). I put bright yellow scales on it. I only need a nice beltpouch for outdoor use.
I've been into the gerbers and the leathermens so long I forgot about the good old Swiss! It would do leatherman and gerber good if they start throwing a magnifying lens or two on some of their stuff as well! Great vid. Simple to the point. Take care.
Love my Swiss Army Knife. Carry a Huntsman because of the saw and scissors. Can't seem to bring myself to by a Champ. Just too big. May need to look into a making a custom job with saw, scissors and magnifying lens.
You seem to know so much about everything related to survival. Wife and I are just watching and she said how come you don't know this stuff. Thanks Dave! Lol
I've had this same knife for around twenty years now, the only thing that's failed me were the scissors (the screw holding it together came out). Its a really good quality tool that has many uses for purposes intended and not intended based on the tool type.
With the old pocket knife magnifying glass .... not the easiest exercise for such an old man:-D Well done Dave Caterburynox. Greetings from the home of the pocket knife Felix
I got the same knife. I got it for Xmas in 1982 when I was 13 & it's still perfect. A few scratches , but they last a lifetime or 2. Well worth the $$$$$. But I warn u , when u get one , you'll end up buying 5-10 more. I don't know why ? But u got to have one for every room & car.
Yeah, that´s what I ask myself always, when I see "dislikes" on those videos. The Knife is great, even for outdoor-stuff ! I had it myself ... and lost it. Now I have a Leatherman Surge, but I really do miss the lens, the ball-pen and the tweezers. One serious disatvantage on that swiss-knife is, that the tools can´t be locked. That always caused me some scratches and puntures. But only when I used a specific tool for another purpose then it was made for. Neverthless, this thing is great. If I still had it, I would not have bought a Leatherman for outdoor-purposes.
***** : It is called Victorinox "Swiss Champ" But you might have to order black casings, because it usually comes with the red ones. At least here in Germany.
Had a SwissChamp once. Kept it in the car. Took the car to a garage to get something fixed. Don't have a SwissChamp anymore. The mechanics apparently liked it.
Slim McBeard Did you check deep under the seats? I had the shop guys empty my glove box once to access fuses and they forgot to put a compact camera back as it had slipped way down under the seat out of sight. Of course I thought they had stolen it until I did a super-thorough check.
Nicely done. Sure is a big SAK. As we know, in some cases, size does matter. What's your feeling about this particular SAK, Dave? Is it too bulky to be practical?
That model is the SwissChamp Utility Knife, the smallest in the SwissChamp series. I carry one that's exactly like that one on a daily basis except mine's blue. It has 33 different tools, and, with the exception of the fish scaler/hook remover and the chisel, I've used all of them at one time or another. It actually took me over 6 months to find one of them! (The straight pin is easy to miss, especially if you don't know to look for it!) The larger SwissChamp models are really pricey and mostly for collectors, but this one is just about right. I also have a WorkChamp that I often carry. The only thing that one really lacks is the magnifying glass, but it does have a larger, locking blade and a larger & more useful saw. They're both great knives that I highly recommend.
Hi Dave another good video. But no words of wisdom? By the way in light of the upcoming Memorial Day do you put up an American flag in any of your camps ? I know it doesn't have dual versatility but I always have one in my pack. Thanks. Tom
how long should you dry the tinder fungus for....i ask because the stuff that grow here is very wet at times and i cant seem to get the big pieces like i have seen in some of your videos....is there a certain size that i should go for as a general rule? or will any do?and if so how long to dry it out so i can shave it up like that lol
Seriously impressive. Having done solar ignition before (West Coast of Scotland) off a high power mag glass, what you did was really quick. Not just that but you really made the point about your skill level. I'd never have considered it even remotely viable off a SAK lens (absent a laser ;-0 ). Any chance of more vids on clothing and on food preservation? I've done a bit of smoking of meat and some dehydrating, but buying Mountain House etc in UK is really expensive. You got any common man tips short of us eating bannock?
Dave, i have just seen your recent instagram upload of all your knives. I would very much so like to see a video of your collection of knives if that is possible. If you could think about that and see whether it is an option please, Cheers, Jack
I really need to practice this more have made a few attempts at it but no success the dust idea very cool maybe with my birch bark can scrap up sum with it and make it work I don't have the right kind of fungus here for this to work
Sean Antill If you take a piece of birch bark and scrape the inside with your blade edge it'll produce a fine powder perfect for creating an ember, plus it'll be on the birch bark which is perfect for transporting it to bigger tinder and then to kindling.
Been some time since I posted( I know your busy so just like most of the time), but I have to say that's a kewl S.A.K. (scratch's head) magnifying glass on a S.A.K who knew.
Don't get me wrong ,I love the swiss army and have carried one most of my life. But most of those large models are just too ungainly in the hand for the size of the blade/tool to be trully useful.
people say that big fixed blades are the only knife you need, well they are wrong, if you look after a swisschamp it wont just last the rest of your life it will last the rest of your grandchildrens lives
hello all i am looking for a mid-high end back pack knife i have 200$ to spend .. i want it in 1095 .. or o1 tool steel ... right now i have a camillus pilots knife as my backpack knife i have had it for many years its time to get some thing more heavy duty ... thanks for the fire tips vid dave
Max Fischer It's a type of fungus, commonly called "horse hoof" due to the shape. You can find it growing off the sides of trees. The flammable portion is called Amadou and was used as tinder before recorded history.

You gotta love the SwissChamp. I never go out of the House without it.
Can't get enough of thee old Swiss Army knife videos, brilliant.
Ah the swisschamp, the pinnacle of Swiss engineering in my opinion!!

It's good to see you using a swiss army knife Dave which in my opinion is hands down the best pocket knife in the world
I've been into the gerbers and the leathermens so long I forgot about the good old Swiss! It would do leatherman and gerber good if they start throwing a magnifying lens or two on some of their stuff as well! Great vid. Simple to the point. Take care.
Love the short videos that are packed with information and not to wordy.
Love my Swiss Army Knife. Carry a Huntsman because of the saw and scissors. Can't seem to bring myself to by a Champ. Just too big. May need to look into a making a custom job with saw, scissors and magnifying lens.
A saw, even a small one, is an oft-overlooked piece of kit. Sawdust makes GREAT tinder, but can also be used to filter, insulate or cushion.
It's not just about what's the right knife for a man but as well what's the right man for the knife. Dave sure is.
Wow, that's a genius idea! I've never seen that, thank you, that I have to try.
greetings from Switzerland
LG Remo

I love my swiss army knife . I've used it more than any other pocket knife I've owned .
I feel nekkid without mine. Been carrying one for years.
Doesnt get much simpler than that, this is a great video
I love Vics... one of the most useful tools for the weight!
never tought about making fire like this before, thx for posting it.
With the old pocket knife magnifying glass .... not the easiest exercise for such an old man:-D Well done Dave Caterburynox. Greetings from the home of the pocket knife
Felix
Thanks Dave for sharing with us. All the best to ya and take care.
Dislikes are from trolls with nothing better to do. Dave you are the man keep up the good work.
Chris Smith Why would you cut such a fun guy??
I got the same knife. I got it for Xmas in 1982 when I was 13 & it's still perfect. A few scratches , but they last a lifetime or 2. Well worth the $$$$$. But I warn u , when u get one , you'll end up buying 5-10 more. I don't know why ? But u got to have one for every room & car.
and this is one of the many many many reasons I say the victorinox is the best pocket knife in the world...just pick the model right for you thx Dave
Very nice! Those tools do come in handy. Blessings!
You should do a series on just the things you read in the journals you read and learn from
You are just a modern nessmuck man keep up the great vids you have been a mentor too me since I was 8 thank you
Agreed Jamie! This is just too awesome and practical. Thanks Dave!
I recently made a fire with mine. I was pretty proud of myself. LOL. Great video as always Dave. Thanks
Yeah, that´s what I ask myself always, when I see "dislikes" on those videos.

Well done! Greatings from Switzerland.
Great. Swisschamp is stunning!
Nice! Too bad most the thinner models (that have a saw) don't have the magnifying glass.
You have to love a swiss army knife that is almost as wide as it is long.
***** : It is called Victorinox "Swiss Champ"
But you might have to order black casings, because it usually comes with the red ones. At least here in Germany.
Great video like the one Mark Novy did that I appreciated. Looks like eventually I will have to pick up another SAK. lol
Nifty but I've never been able to get the magnifying glass to work for me. I'll have to try it again when we actually get some sun.
That was a great one Dave!
A Victorinox knife, and a Bosch-Loughm magnifying glass are my EDC to this point..
You can use the file on there (or a multitool) to strike sparks with a piece of flint.
I thought my phone was glitching, but it was a VERY steady hand!
Had a SwissChamp once. Kept it in the car. Took the car to a garage to get something fixed. Don't have a SwissChamp anymore. The mechanics apparently liked it.

I did, but still couldn't find it...
Excellent, wish i could find some tinder fungus an fatwood. Gonna have to go deeper into the woods
i like vids like this. quick to the point, show wats up, nuff said with nothing said
Nice! Always learning new things from you bro.

Those have really gone up in price. Bought one at Costco about fifteen years ago for $62. Well worth the price.
Hi Dave another good video. But no words of wisdom? By the way in light of the upcoming Memorial Day do you put up an American flag in any of your camps ? I know it doesn't have dual versatility but I always have one in my pack. Thanks. Tom
I was just about to ask which knife that was until I seen the link. Do you still carry the woodsman it was also a good knife
My favorite SAK by far is the "farmer". A saw, a blade, a can opener a screwdriver and metal scales. Thats it. BTW it fits in a altoids tin.
how long should you dry the tinder fungus for....i ask because the stuff that grow here is very wet at times and i cant seem to get the big pieces like i have seen in some of your videos....is there a certain size that i should go for as a general rule? or will any do?and if so how long to dry it out so i can shave it up like that lol
Dave you're awesome I try starting fires with a magnifying glass and all I can burn is ants

Great silent video Dave. Has Victorinox made you an offer to use your vid in their advertising. They should.
Holy smokes! That is one big knife, does it weigh about 20 pounds? But your skills are top notch as usual. Thanks
Very slick trick. Thanks!
That was a fast ember!
Cool video. What is the material you are sawing? Looks like a dried mushroom of some sort.
I thought it was an old half-eaten cinnamon bun?
thanks David

Great video! Thank you!
You should make a swiss army video
When will yall start selling the arrow head tool on your site?
Right on
Thanks for the video
So nice. So simple.
Been some time since I posted( I know your busy so just like most of the time), but I have to say that's a kewl S.A.K. (scratch's head) magnifying glass on a S.A.K who knew.
You are the best ever
Nice job.
Sweet thank you Dave
bad ass video, just getting it done.
Cool stuff man
Good tip. Thanks.
Wonderful!
Don't get me wrong ,I love the swiss army and have carried one most of my life. But most of those large models are just too ungainly in the hand for the size of the blade/tool to be trully useful.
that tree fungus you're using, is that chaga ???
Looks like that Swiss Army knife has enough gizmos to build a space station, or do your taxes.
does that one have a glass magnifying glass or plastic
And that, my friends, is how it's done.
too bad leatherman doesn't have a magnifying glass...
anyone know what the smallest SAK is with a magnifying glass?
That was a silent movie. I hope the next one is not in black and white. :)
Hahaha, very funny comment! :-)
Ps. Is that thing a road apple ?
Nice.
I looked at that model but thought it was over kill. but I just read reviews and most 5 stars so I guess it depends on user, ,,,,,
Impressive!
The knife was I k I guess but the horseshoe fungus looked exceptional...lol
people say that big fixed blades are the only knife you need, well they are wrong, if you look after a swisschamp it wont just last the rest of your life it will last the rest of your grandchildrens lives
What type/version is the knife?
hello all i am looking for a mid-high end back pack knife i have 200$ to spend .. i want it in 1095 .. or o1 tool steel ... right now i have a camillus pilots knife as my backpack knife i have had it for many years its time to get some thing more heavy duty ... thanks for the fire tips vid dave
I dig it.. But I have never had good luck with those swiss army knife with a bunch of feachers.. They always brake on me..
There are those that talk and those that do.
Quick and easy
Thank you sir..:)
did u lose you're voice dave??
Knowledge is power. Thanks.
Works for me.
ok , now i need a biggerer one ... my tinker feels small now :D
what was he sawing in the beginning?
Max Fischer It's a type of fungus, commonly called "horse hoof" due to the shape. You can find it growing off the sides of trees. The flammable portion is called Amadou and was used as tinder before recorded history.
how is everyone doing today. Everyone respond even dave please!!
This is why I don't carry a leatherman, this right here!
Slick!
