- This is a fun video. Today we are hitting an old school tricep workout. This is the type of triceps workout you would have seen or done back in the 80's. This is how we all did it. Now i did make one modification due to injury prevention but other then that this is as basic is it gets. Give this a try and let me know how sore you got your tricep the next day.

I used to love the seated tricep dip machines(especially the ones with a fist shaped handle), awesome finisher with a drop sets when your arms were burnt out, though not many gyms seem to have them.
Good video
From an OLYMPIA WINNING coach
Not sure if I got it from tricep workouts or preacher curls but I seemed to have developed tennis elbow from working out. Do you have any tips to avoid elbow injuries? Specifically tendinitis.
John is such a good guy teaching a homeless guy to do triceps pushdowns.
30 years ago? That’s like 2 of my lifetimes combined. Glad I can get the knowledge from so long ago John! Thanks brother
If you're 15 you better call him Father
jk
Good head you got above those shoulders Charlie, you'll be very successfull if you respect ''experience'', I felt respect for your attitude, best wishes to you. ;)
Never change what has always worked. Old School all the way baby!!
3:40 "a lot of the stuff we did in the old school wasn't exactly intelligent"
These guys sacrificed their tendons in order to find what works so that we could train properly. God Bless y'all old era dudes
You know it’s a good one when John is using the whole stack on the first exercise 😂
Use to do tricep pushdowns in the 90's and finished them off by leaning over the bar like a close grip press, we called it nail punching.
I like how the video is about old school exercises and the overlay on the video makes it look even more old school
It's looking really good though. I like the rich and saturated esthetic
"a lot of stuff we did in the old school wasn't exactly intelligent"
Interesting that the “old style” tricep pressdown basically was a compound movement. I also really like the combo of skull crushers with close grip press and can say from personal experience that it’s very effective. 💪
I do a similar thing because I would do lay down on the bench and bring it behind the head then do skull crushers then close grip press would definitely recommend it
I like the jm press
I do that combo as well with a curl bar but bang out 12-15 reps on that close grip. I do actual cgbp with heavier weight as well though before that and after bench. That's pretty much my whole tri workout since I only have bars, db's and plates. No machines or pulleys.
I do that too.

“Ok, we will have to find a way to add some weight, that was the full stack”. Very nice and that looked incredibly easy. Thank you for yet another excellent video!
I remember those days. Don’t have 20 yo elbows anymore so spot on with the wraps. A series of these would be awesome! Thanks
Thanks John . Great nostalgia for us old guys . We also did barbell pullover press combo for lats/triceps/chest . Now only if my elbows and shoulders were as fresh as they were 30 years ago . 🤦♂️
yea no kidding!
Nothing better than old school workout. Thank you Mr. Meadows, you´re the best
1:30 was one of my favorite tri moves, with a narrow V bar, and the cable running right in front of the tip of my nose, full stack + 40kg/88lbs added, 4 sets starting from 20 and going down. Was my finishing exercise for the tri's last year. Good mass builder.
Thank you Mr. Meadows, wonderfull information, gym-goers have forgetten that. 👍
Love this idea of showing oldschool training methods! great video!
Love it , the owner of my gym is huge advocate for the old school exercises in lifting weights,
I like it because it gets lasting results
That’s awesome the first tricep workout you showed the push downs I still do them I learned about them about 15 years ago and they are my favorite. Thanks for sharing
Love this! Good old "real" Tricep pressdowns
You gotta love the old school info. Much respect.
You're really inspiring me and my younger brother of late, watching all of your videos, they're so helpful. Great job 👏
You made UA-cam fitness fun again. Really wholesome vibe
When learning old school triceps extionsions back in the eighties I always feared slitting my throat with the cable when leaning in ;)
What a great video introduction that captures your positive vibes. I miss you a ton.
Gunna try all of these for my tricep work thanks john!
You've really helped me to remember some of the things that people did back in the mid-80s. There was a lot of 5x5.
I really enjoy your videos and advice. Thanks 👍
Brilliant. Will try this out for sure. Waiting for your 200 rep chest, back & leg workouts John. Pls put that out out ASAP.
Thank's for sharing tour knowledge 👍👍👍💪💪💪💪
I use to do those press downs. Waaaaay back at Bally's fitness
Cable close press. Incredible movement
I love the videos man they’ve really helped me on my fitness journey to learn all this new knowledge to put in my own workouts and it’s been really good
Hi John boy that routine took me back especially the dips with chains, there was one chap in the gym back then we used to call Jacob Marley because of all the chains he had round his neck. Very best wishes .Jim Harrison Cheshire UK.
i absolutly love this method
Exactly what I need to watch.. to both forget the madness elsewhere in the nation.. and bring up my lagging tris.
30 years ago today was my 1st day of bootcamp my 1st real workout, mentally and physically 😁💪
I’ve been incorporating a lot of your (Jhon’s ) methods in my training. I don’t know if I love you or hate you cause I haven’t been this sore in years lol 😂 and I’m a seasoned lifter. Love the channel! Hope to see you at it for years to come sir.
I love watching Mountain dog videos, it makes me feel like I am doing to workout right with him.
Thanks for a very useful video. Old school works were the best.
That initial exercise looks like a cable variant of a straight bar dip.
loved the routine
I love watching john videos he is so knowledgeable keep up the good work john i wish u can prep me 2 look my best
Very good job and wait to explain what you were doing I like it thank you
Very fascinating stuff
did this today, acheived a crazy tricep pump. Better than the lever tricep pushdowns i usually do
East livingston Worlds was my first gym ... my junior and senior year in high school I was member... I love that place ...
His buddy is packed in as he was going to Alaska. I'm sweating already with only a T shirt and looking at it :-)
I got up and turned on my air conditioner. 🤦♂️😆🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for sharing.
My idea of old school is do heavy set bulk and strength exercise and follow up with an exercises movements that
focuses on each individual head of the tricep/bicep. I been doing decline close grip for bulk...I feel it in my joints at my age. I will try cable press downs at your recommendation...and elbow wraps.
THANKS.
Great video, thanks!
My fav you tuber so humble
I wear Iron Rebel elbow sleeves cause of you, Mountain Dog. I bought em when you were still with us. Miss you buddy
you can clearly see John is a nice guy who is passing on experience he has learned, when I see the negative/ nasty comments made I think.. don't be a keyboard hero, have some respect, if you got nothing good to say, say FA,
Love the Consistent uploads!
More to come!
Brilliant content
John, that pulley press down is just an open chain version of a straight bar dip. I've seen video footage of Larry Scott doing the pulldown and so assume, his coach, Gironda developed that exercise to compensate for the poor relative strength of most lifters, basing it on the calisthenics exercise. Gironda seems to have been inspired a lot by gymnastics.
Rather than finding ways to increase the load on the stack, you might want to try the body weight version next time, with a narrow grip. Cant see how lack of load would be an issue. And even if it is, a dip belt would be the elegant solution, and cant see anyone nearing matching that stack load with it.
That heavy pressdown is SO good
this dude was the coolest!
Yes, I rememder doing pushdowns like that.
Thank you sir
Great Videos !!!👍👍👍👍
I just love his introduction
Love the new camera
Thanks for sharing this John,
You are very welcome
Great video
Always great content, always. Thank you sir.
Very welcome
Hi John, enjoying the recent videos. Tried the "200" workout and what a pump! The joints liked it too : ) I was in a rush last night and even did the 200's for legs and today my quads are SORE. Thanks brother as always~Marcus
Good stuff
Great video brother!
Mannn, 30 years ago I was at Ferrignos gym in Brooklyn on mcdonald Ave.
Pushdowns (the way you mentioned)
Skull crushers
Overhead Tricep extension.
Great vid.
Crazy you’ve been able to maintain such a physique for so long you always look freaking huge.
Let John’s knowledge live on, RIP
I love it
Absolute A+ GOLD.
Man, I freakin love your videos and we are all blessed to grow, quite literally, from your knowledge.
I think coach Greg rates exercise 2 quite highly for triceps. Great minds think alike I see.
I’m a big fan of them push downs and I haven’t done them for a while will be getting them heavy push downs done tomorrow though
Lol...we did the same excercises at high school gym class. We also did tricep kick backs, which now I know do very little to nothing.
My first thought was that John was training the homeless lol
Love the old school!! First gym I ever went to was World Gym e. Livingston. Would do cardio or calves first and watch people train..great vid John!
That is awesome!
All about the old school and your videos because theyre so simple/straight to the point yet effective...when I first got into lifting again I watched a lot of fitness channels and they all had some great content but just too much for me at times
Glad you like them!
Interesting, good stuff Mr. Meadows.
Thank you kindly
very similar to most of my tricep workouts; most times I do bench dips though
I like the chains on the dips. I will try these this evening :) Destruction to the max!!
That first exercise makes me think of a diamond push up but with a cable. Yes you will feel it in your chest but really sets those triceps on fire. Just like what john said. Great video John! 😊
Exactly!!
Lovely💐
I use that assistance dip machine, the one that also can be used for pull ups training. After doing dips ill get low and press the foot rest, i can't do it so much now that my hand was broke and my wrist is ruined ( not from training ). But the combination of the two movments really works.
Uncle John is so wholesome hehe
John's impossible not to like.
Noice filter on the camera mate, and thanks for the workout!
Hi John you hit all my favourite tricep exercises that I still do you should try the tricep press down on a lat machine it's a much better exercise than doing it on the cable crossover machine give it a try with the same weight you used on the cable crossover and let me know the difference between the two stay safe and healthy
Hi John, have to smile when you equate 'old school' with workouts of 30 years ago. My mentor during my teenage years in the 1970s was Mr. Chuck Sipes (RIP). Now era was truly old school. Chuck was a real powerhouse,an incredible inspiration. Love to see more of this.
he was awesome
Hey John been watching your videos for awhile now and love them can you please answer this question for me I’ve been doing chest and triceps, back and biceps shoulders and legs but I feel like I’m wrong in what I choose to do together will you please lmk what body parts to train together thank you in advance for answering my question
Can use a lat pulldown machine for cable push downs if the stack on the regular pulley isn't heavy enough.
John you look like Mr. T. On that dips 🤣💪
I remember doing those pressdowns with whole stack and pinning plates. No way I could do those anymore
Old school, best school.
Wish john would do video for bad shoulder joints workouts
lol the pushdown it's a straightbar dip, so it's cool my grand pa taught me that
your workout partner at 4:28 is doing the barbell skull crusher. that angle kills my elbows, i like to do it and bring the bar to my eyes. i feel it loads the lower triceps harder, but doesn't kill my elbows that the old school traditional skull crusher. for the cable pushdowns, i do it the same way you guys do it as it feels better on my elbows. i am happy to know that what i am doing is still something you do so i am on the right path. no dips for me though, busted up a rotator cuff doing that. my shoulders aren't what they used to be.
Hi John love the podcast just wondering have u ever done the 200 rep on legs
hey john another old school back in the 70 and early 80,s was the lying on the flat bench with your head hanging over slightly then ez bar pull over then press inner grip you got a stretch at the top of triceps then the press gave you the entire stretch
yep
hey John can you post a build your own leg workout?
