the fun part is that all the books set after it in the enterprise line of books go out of their way to get rid of all the stuff in this finale. Like having Tucker actually be alive due to section 31 and having the federation not actually being formed yet since well the Earth-romulan war has not happened yet either.

It interfered with the real story and killed off Trip. The parts w/o the holoprogramme were not bad. Cut it out and have Trip live and it would have been better. The bit about the scene between Troi-Data and the Pegsus story were non-sequiturs. T'Pol was not even told about the fake death scene-it's likely Archer and the others know she'd try to talk Trip out of the mission so maybe that's why Archer didn't give her the note by Trip til right before the speech. You can see the look in her rounded eyes and know she was surprised before Archer hugs her. They holoprogramme cut off why and what happened to her and Trip as well as the speech itself.

Trip's death was so bad, that one of the novels retconned it so that it was all part of a plan by Archer to fake Trip's death so he could go undercover as a Romulan (it makes sense, trust me).

somecallmejames Yeah, I'm not much for major retcons and for considering novels as conon. I make an exception for Trip's death. It's the only thing that makes "These are the Voyages…" being a _TNG_ hologram rather than a true _Ent_ episode even a little stomachable for me; Trip dieing is still the "official" story in the 24th century, so that's the history as Riker and the computer know it.
P.S. And even then, just barely able to stomach it if I think of it that way.

The reasons, if not a defense, of "These Are the Voyages": The show's cancellation was announced rather suddenly, just as they were beginning to hash out plans for Season 5 (which, yay, would have been rather Shran-centric, but boo, would have revealed T'Pol as part Romulan.) With short notice, they had to slap together a series finale when they'd been planning a season finale.
So they leant into something that had happened in all the sequels. The first episode of TNG shows Dr. McCoy. The first episode of DS9 has Sisko confront Picard (which was quite effective and rather necessary.) The first episode of Voyager is set partly on DS9, in Quark's, no less. So they wanted to give us a similar structure, with the challenge being that ENT was set before all the other shows, meaning they couldn't have given us an opener as the other series had had. So they were playing off precedent. They just did a horrible job of it.

Personally I like the first two seasons of Enterprise more then the last two. As a Trekkie you had to love this series, because lots of things are visualized that are only mentioned in previous series of the franchise. Also it focused more on the "discovery" aspect of the show. This whole exploration thing was new for humanity, and the crew of the NX-01 are the very first humans who are going that far. I also loved the intro. I was kind of sad that the show was hated by the majority of viewers. I think they wanted something in the TNG time period (or slightly beyond). But really: After Nemesis they had no option. All the enemies the Federation faced were defeated. Peace with the Klingons, alliance with the Romulans (after Shinzons death), the Dominion nearly destroyed, the Borg highly damaged by the nano virus,... hell, even Species 8472 had no chance against the Voyager...
The only episode you mentioned I struggle with is "These are the voyages", because I find it inadequate to have characters from another series in the last episode of Enterprise. The cast of Enterprise was good, and they did not deserve that.
Enterprise was not that bad, but I as I wrote earlier, I think the spectators wanted something else. However I dont like Discovery, because of the story telling and all that plot holes.

I'm with you on this point Ascender2306. The first two seasons are about Humanity' s first steps into space beyond the solar system, so its totally plausible that they would have these moments of discovery, trials and set backs as opposed to those critics who say the lack of any major story arc makes it suck.

      @scaper8 6 років тому +1

I agree for the most part. _Enterprise_ was rocky at times, but pretty good and it felt like a true prequel to me.
I'm kind of mixed about whether I feel the first two or latter two seasons are better. The last two have far better writing, characterization, pacing, stories, etc. but the first two really hit the exploration and naïvety of humans so well, as you correctly pointed out.

What I did not like about the last two seasons was the whole Xindi-stuff and bad CGI-effects (Insectoids). Personally I would have loved to see more of the Suliban or the Klingons and Romulans. Personally I think that Voyager should have been like the last two seasons of Enterprise. Running short of supplies, modding and repairing the ship with spare parts and scrap with a crew with heavy losses...

@@Gentleman...Driver ~ I liked the intro too. I saw a comment on IMDB (before they got rid of their forums) that said they didn't like it because it sounded too much like the theme song for a show about a small town boy growing up and moving to the big city. When I read that, it made me realize (and reply) that _that_ is exactly what Enterprise was.

I am going to say two things in the defence of my criticism of enterprises's first two seasons.
      1) The writers wanted something else with things like that 'Borg' episode in season 1. If you are doing your own thing, do your own thing, don't pretend to have Next Gen episodes (see 2 days 2 nights and the finale).
      2) Daniels! While the Time Agency narrative could have been interesting; its execution was not.

Why is nobody talking about Aquisition? The idea that the Ferengi found Starfleet 200 years before first contact and nobody knew it because their sensors happened to be down and the entire crew was blind is the stupidest example of plot convenience I've ever seen. At least the Borg episode made sense, with a tie-in to First Contact and a bit of easily explained time travel. The Ferengi episode is pure stupid.

Vanishing Point was my choice for the worst. They took Hoshi, an already poorly-written character, and portrayed her as unreasonably meek and emotional. They wrapped up the entire episode as a dream. It's not even train-wreck bad, like Threshold or The Omega Glory. Star Trek: Enterprise was a good show, with an intriguing premise and a LOT of potential. Sadly this potential was wasted in many stagnant episodes which left me with that taste of "already seen, already done". In many cases the basic plot was the same already used in previous TNG and VOY episodes, just with different characters and settings, but basically the same (to mention a few: Vanishing Point; Dawn; Horizon; The Breach; Chosen Realm; Doctor's Orders). This laziness and unwillingness to boldly go "where no previous Trek series has gone before" remain, imho, the main failure of the Berman-Braga management of the show. Aside this, I still like the show as a whole, because there were very good episodes and by the time of the fourth season it was really starting to take a good direction (even if I think that was possible with far less self-referentialism). I always liked the characters, particulary Archer, Trip and Phlox, sadly for many of the others there was not much development and some of them where just left behind (let's say... Travis the Chauffeur).

  • @JonBerry555

With the finale episode of Enterprise, i felt they always intended for the series to end with the formation of the federation, but the cancellation cut it short. It would have been nice if enterprise continued for at least two more seasons. Tell the story of the Earth-Romulan War and how that lead to direct formation of the federation. Have a season 5 set up an eventually war with the Romulans and in a season 6 have the actually war and then have these are the voyages, but have it make more sense. And if trip is killed, make it have a larger impact, like I don't now saving the ship from a warp core breech or something along that line (Think Spock in Wrath of Khan). But that is just my opinion.

I think an honorable mention should be "Cogenitor," even if only for being so controversial. Many believe it was one of the worst Star Trek episodes ever, while others think it's perfectly fine. I dislike it because it portrays Archer in such an awful manner, and how he acts so out of character & hypocritical. That chastising of Trip at the end? Coming from Archer, it's a complete joke.

I personally found "These are the Voyages" to be generally a good episode, yes it could have been a Mid-season one, and yes the death of Trip could have been done differently or not at all, they killed off one of the best characters in the show, and yes the episode could have done without the Riker and Deanna holodeck part in it, I agree on that. For me it did not ruine the general feel of the episode, but it could have done without it. The TNG episode "The Pegasus", is one of my favorite episodes, but to see (older) Riker and Deanna trying to play there younger versions, was a bit to much. I would have loved to hear Archers speech , because to my opinion, the whole episode builds up to it, and not to hear it was a let-down for me. The ending however I loved, seeing the Enterprice Nx-01, Enterprice-D and Enterprice fly past with the famous words “These are the Voyages” always makes me come close to tears (sorry if my grammer and spelling is bad)

Sadly, we didn’t get to see the two most pivotal events in Star Trek lore - the Earth/Romulan War and the birth of the Federation - depicted onscreen. Instead, we had to go to the bookshelf in order to find out what might have been, and have it play out in our minds as we read the 9(?) ENT retcon novels. However, at this late date (and considering who’s running Star Trek now) I’m not holding out much hope that we’ll see the Earth/Romulan War and the birth of the Federation depicted onscreen, either in a live-action or animated miniseries, anytime soon.

I mean, imagine if these were klingons they were dealing with, and they caught an attitude. Your first episode is the one that got me looking to see what people thought of as the worst episodes. I just picked up the series on DVD cheap at a thrift store and started rewatching it. I came to a night in sickbay and found it completely cringeworthy. I didn't mind the sick dog part, but the Dr stuff and even worst the T'Pol stuff was almost unwatchable. A female Vulcan crew member was a great idea, but between her outfits and mannerisms, I had trouble accepting her. (BTW, I liked 7 0f 9 because she was written well and at least there was a Borg excuse for her catsuit). I actually didn't mind Rogue Planet, but I didn't focus on the romance aspect and more on the hunters, especially since I recognized the voice of one of the actors from an episode of Babylon 5. Telepathic shapeshifters is kind of a cool idea. I agree, 2 days and 2 nights wasn't great. I guess it kind of hits you with the opposite of what you expected for a Riza outing, but it could have been more. I haven't gotten to season 4 yet, but I'm happy to see the finale in the worst list. What a insult that was. So here I am 6 years later watching this video because I thought A Night in Sickbay was the cringiest Star Trek episode I'd ever seen.

Episodes like "These Are The Voyages." is exactly why the series failed. It was pure crap. Just like the entire Xindi arc. Just like how Vulcans suddenly think that humans stink with no mention of it anywhere in trek beforehand. And ironically, they gave us NEW when they should have been exploring the OLD. They didn't even try that until the fourth season and by then it was too late. Season four, should have been season three. But they gave us the Xindi, another "new" race instead. That probe that cut a swath through earth, should have been a unidentified Romulan device. A proper precursor to the Romulan War. But NOPE! The writers were clueless as to what the trek fans expected and did not understand the era they were writing about until it was too late.

I actually like "A Night in Sickbay", mainly cuz Porthos is central to the plot. Definitely agree about "These Are the Voyages..." though. I love the relationship between Riker & Troi, but why did they have to be in the ENT finale? Even Jolene Blalock wasn't thrilled about that. Also, why have it set during a TNG episode with Archer and crew only appearing in the holodeck? 11 years after TNG ended, Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis had clearly aged a bit during that time. So why not have their plot set sometime after Nemesis, which was released 3 years earlier? And I actually thought that's what it was gonna be when I heard Riker & Troi were in the ENT finale.
