      When Star Trek: TNG first came on, I watched a couple of episodes--I think they were the famously awful "Code Of Honor", and "Lonely Among Us"--and understandably concluded that the show sucked and didn't watch it for a few years. What brought me back was seeing "The Drumhead". I was shocked--this show had somehow turned into something worth watching! Had no idea what these "Borg" mentioned in the episode were, but was interested in finding out. Syndicated reruns filled me in before too long.

    I always felt 'I, Borg' was one of the greatest TNG episodes, possibly above BoBW and Inner Light. Certainly it's the most underrated. Seeing Geordi and Crusher essentially raise this child-like character and teach him lessons in humanity that were overrun by the Borg programming was as engaging character work as we've ever seen in Trek, and Hugh's initial despair at not being able to hear the voices of the rest of the collective was surprisingly moving.
    Add to that Picard's moral dilemma at having an opportunity to wipe out the Borg, but having to essentially turn a fledgling human into a suicide bomber to do so - a weapon of mass destruction that would be committing genocide. His scenes with Guinan were incredibly powerful, with her using his compassion against him in their fencing match to demonstrate how human feelings could be an exploitable weakness, and urging him to eradicate the Borg without pondering the wider philosophical and moral quandaries.
    To then see Guinan change her tune after meeting and talking to Hugh was one of the most compelling about-faces a character ever made in Trek, which underlined the moral lines most Trekkian characters are simply unwilling to cross when faced with the potential consequences of their actions.
    And all this led to the wonderfully unexpected and gripping scene where Picard finally talks to Hugh. To see him channel Locutus in an attempt to expose any latent Borg programming was simply riveting, and when Hugh refused to obey I was literally cheering. One of the best scenes in any episode of Trek, which Patrick Stewart and Jonathan del Arco really sold.
    We all know how the Borg progressed after TNG, from First Contact through to Voyager's later seasons - in fact, I saw all of those before working my way through the entirety of TNG. But when 'I, Borg' reached its final scenes and the characters pondered the idea of Hugh's reclaimed humanity itself acting as a virus that could bring down the collective from within, I was in absolute awe. It didn't matter that I knew it would come to nothing - the very notion had me on the edge of my seat during the final scene when the drones appear to collect Hugh, and the little look he gave Geordi before they transported away had me shedding a tear.
    Truly great sci-fi, one of Trek's finest hours.
    Oh yeah, good list by the way.

      Its an interesting mystery, but what makes it is that ending. The idea of a creature so powerful that a single moment of anguish is all that is necessary to accidentally commit an act of genocide. The idea of a creature so ashamed of its actions that it would psychically tear a person's mind apart to keep them from learning the truth. The Dowd was an interesting and terrifying creature that made us look less than insects.

    The Measure of a Man and The Drumhead I feel both deserve to be in the top ten. Star Trek is a vision of a future imperfect, but one where humanity is so much more evolved, and grown up. Both of these episodes perfectly characterize issues that we will hit int the future (what constitutes as life), and those we have in our past, currently, and will continue to struggle with in our future (how far will we allow someone to distort truth I the guise of a white knight). For me, these are two prime examples of Trek at its best. I fully understand how difficult it is to narrow TNG down to a top 10, but still, dude, Measure of a Man, and The Drumhead!

    • @Helbore
      @Helbore 6 років тому +6

      I found The Drumhead boring when I was a teenager watching it for the first time. I'd now agree its one of the best and is a great example of history continually repeating itself and, as Picard said, there is always someone like her waiting for the right climate in which to flourish.

      Exactly, your points are spot on for what Roddenberry's concept was for Star Trek and those 2 episodes explored it very well. One he passed away and TNG ended, the quality of Trek dropped immediately. DS9 was a good show but explored areas that were the complete antithesis of Roddenberry's vision. Modern Trek is much worse - instead of quality storytelling and themes we get mindless action and terrible dialogue.

    I would have put the episode, "First Contact", (not the movie by the same name) in the mix. It's a well-written "role reversal" story where humans (an advance surveillance team from the Enterprise) are the extra-terrestrials on an earth-like planet. Then, of course, something goes wrong. It asks the question, "How do you say hello to someone from another world?" Thank you for including "Darmok". I wrote a paper for a grad class on ELL's (English Language Learners) as a high school teacher. I wrote a whole section on "Darmok" where they speak in metaphors.

    Of course, "Relics", "Measure of a man", "The Drumhead" are breathtaking. However, I am amazed "Pen Pals" didn't make the list. The perfect, stellar, and flawless description of the functions of the prime directive made my jaw drop. Yes, Wesley's acting was lackluster, but feeling the full gravity of a moral precept, while watching millions die is just chilling. Also, I would suggest "Symbiosis" should have made the list.

    I cannot speak to a better series finale, but an equally good one: "Sleeping in light", last episode of Babylon 5.
    It did the exact opposite of what TNG did. TNG went out with a bang (and I lllllllove "all good things", don't get me wrong), while B5 went the way of quiet reflection and letting the fire go out with a last glimmer of the embers (thought there was a rather large bang at the very end, wink wink).
    Again, I would hold the two of them side by side in quality but at opposite ends of the spectrum.

    • @CaseAgainstFaith1
      @CaseAgainstFaith1 6 років тому

      The first time I watched Sleeping in Light I was disappointed because I had poor expectations. I was expecting some kind of "final revelation", last mystery to solve. When there wasn't, I was like, WTF. So, when I watched it again a year later with correct expectation, I appreciated it more.

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 6 років тому +1

      I love Babylon 5's *other* finale: "The Deconstruction Of Falling Stars", the replacement season 4 finale made when they discovered the show had been renewed and they weren't going to show "Sleeping In Light" in that slot. To me it serves as a fine alternate finale for the whole series. There's a nice nod to Walter Miller's "A Canticle for Leibowitz" in it, among many other things.

    • @neighslayer768
      @neighslayer768 5 років тому +1

      When I did my first binge watch of the series, I purposely skipped that episode and saved it for last. Both were good last episodes, but considering how S5 was a bit of an oddball, DoFS feels like a better finale when taken with the four seasons that preceded it.

    • @MattMcIrvin
      @MattMcIrvin 5 років тому

      I also have some negative associations with "Sleeping In Light" because when it aired, I set our VCR to record it and accidentally recorded over one of my girlfriend's (now wife's) MST3K tapes, which had not good repercussions. (It was the episode that included the short "Mr. B Natural", probably one of the funniest bits of the Joel era, and one with particular significance to Sam because the original short was actually an ad for the company that made her French horn. Not a good one to tape over.)

  • @BollocksUtwat
    @BollocksUtwat 6 років тому +3

    The only thing I can say about The best of Both Worlds is that you should watch it in its broadcast format and not the single episode format created for DVD release. The HD update of TNG only includes the single episode format and that robs you of one of the single best cliff hangers ever broadcast on TV with one of the best accompanying musical bits, so good in fact that it was referenced by Family Guy in a particular episode.

      Rowan, I disagree about First Contact. As movie critics Siskel and Ebert pointed out, it works as a science fiction adventure that is accessible to the uninitiated as well as the long time Trek fans. Frakes handled the necessary exposition a non fan needs without boring the fans of the series who already knew the backstory. Personally, I think it's the best made Trek film. Wrath of Khan will always be my favorite, hands down.

      I always found it convenient that the one time Wesley Crusher wasn't in his usual station, the alien red-shirts the helmsman. "Where Silence Has Lease" is certainly better than "The Child," and it's written by the screenwriter of Wrath of Khan.

      I liked Frame of Mind on first viewing, but don't think it holds up well when you know the outcome. Future Imperfect is better, I'll agree and I have to admit I'd never made the connection as to how similar those episodes were for Riker.
      I also like your point about "The Next Phase." I remember saying the same thing to my dad when first watching it and he said, "never mind phasing through the floor, the artificial gravity should be having no effect on them and they should be floating off backwards as the ship moves off! No reason for them to stay in the same place as the Enterprise as it moves around!"

    Conspiracy?! While it's an unusual episode in TNG's catalogue in that it's dark with a sense of looming dread, it's also one of the worst episodes... I can only think that it's on your top 10 list that it's so bad it's good It's plot and tone being completely different to the rest of TNG, the special effects being corny and generally, the absurdity overall lends this to be a rather unbelievable episode.
    If I were to replace any of your selections, it would be 3 episodes
    Firstly, I'd replace "Conspiracy" with "Timescape" - Timescape is an epsiode that leaves you feeling crious, you want to see how the character interact with a seemingly frozen moment in time, slowly unravelling the mystery.
    Second, I'd replace "Where Silence has Lease" with "Sarek" - This episode highlights the truth of Vulcans, that they are powerfully emotional. Often we see how they are reserved, cold and logical yet as Sarek grows older, he's losing his control, and that loss, spills out on the crew of the enterprise - with this revelation we then see the merging of Sarek and Picard and more so, Sir Patrick Stewart's impeccable acting then expressing the power, volatility and conflict that goes on within the Vulcan mind.
    Finally, "All Good Things" it certainly was a swan song but I'd rather have had this as an honourable mention, it's replacement I would have to say it goes to "Chain of Command" Chain of Command gives the viewer a kick up the backside, it reminds ourselves and the crew of the enterprise how complacent they and we became with the characters. We see radical changes made by Jellico and how it alters the Status-quo. The viewer initially would think that Jellico is an antagonist and we dislike him but as the episode progresses, we actually learn that he was doing his job in the best interests for everyone, and that's exactly what he did. And finally, we get to see even more fantastic acting by Patrick Stewart. "Human! How many light do you see?"

      Conspiracy is the worst episode of the entire series to me. I can't believe anyone liked it.

      Seriously. When I saw "Where Silence Has Lease" followed by "Conspiracy" I was certain I was getting punk'd and that this was actually a worst-of list. Measure of a Man? Elementary My Dear Data? Chain of Command? Timescape? Nah, let's skip all those and put this trash on the list....

      @@BirdOPrey5 It's not truly bad in essence; the problem with it is that it functions extremely well as a traditional "Monster of the Week" episode, but fails badly in terms of world building and general series continuity (when Paramount unofficially retconned the nameless "ear scorpions" out of existence, they made an excellent decision, given what an extreme antagonist civilization they made; the Borg did a much better job of fulfilling this role). This episode's writing quality also leaves some things to be desired ("the infectees are too stupid to tell the difference between themselves and the non-infectees!??"). It's still interesting to see body horror and head explosions in an ST episode, though! :D

      @@MateDrinker33 I'm not one usually to criticize special effects because the story means so much more to me than the visuals, but this episode lacked both. For all practical purposes the entirety of the Federation leadership was wiped out and Picard beamed up and left it to everyone else to figure out? The event is never mentioned again and there seem to be zero repercussions. Plus the special effects for the head explosion were BEYOND cheesey. Why wouldn't they just vaporize the guy? Data uses a hand phaser to vaporize an entire city's aqueduct system but we're really to believe these little things could increase the strength of human skin by so much phasers can't penetrate until the skin melts off and the head explodes? Absurd even by Trek standards. I think I'm going to do a video just on how terrible this episode is! You've awakened the warrior spirit!

    I would remove silence has lease and darmok from your list and replace them with Conundrum and the BEST OVERALL TNG episode of them all "Clues".

      I always liked Conundrum at the time, but the more I think about it now, the less impressive it seems. First off, why didn't the alien insert himself as the Captain? It was ok to usurp Riker, but not Picard, even though that would have accomplished his mission much easier. Also, they offer no explanation as to how he pulled this off. They just brush it aside by saying, "he seemed pretty powerful considering he overwhelmed us, so why did he need us to being with?" "Nah, apparently his race can be defeated by one photon torpedo, too, so that's why he needed us." Didn't really explain how he pulled off overpowering the Enterprise, though, did they?
      To be honest, I still have a soft spot for it, despite the obvious flaws. But if that had been a Voyager episode, I'd have ripped it to pieces. Its only the TNG cast that help to carry it and the effective mystery works when you don't know the outcome.
      Clues was a smart episode though. They handled the mystery just as well, but the payoff was so much better as everything made sense once you knew the whole picture.
