Being from Spokane, I'm lucky enough to be able to visit Paradise Fibers regularly...super nice people and an amazing store in general. Btw...silk won't felt, so no worries about handling it. 😀
Another fab video from you, Rebecca. I have just been looking into buying a large rectangular pan like yours, and have discovered you can get steamer inserts for them! They're usually described as "perforated Gastronorm pan". This opens up a whole new world of dyeing for me.
The silk is gorgeous and would love to see how it spins up also really like the blue and fuchsia so vibrant and the last yarn you used to save the last of the dye is so pastel I think I’d be tempted to add some speckles. Thank you for this great tutorial, stay safe love and hugs xx
It was the largest plastic container I could find at the dollar store! :D I think I might get a few baskets and maybe a super large lid or under the bed type storage box to have more space to spread things out in the future.
The colours are so cool and fresh on the silk, much like an ice cream gelati, you must show us all how it spins up. The ice process is something i am waiting for summer to try, so just another few months for Melb til hot days again
I feel like I rarely post seasonal content in season for me, so it would be in season for you! (I often post snow dyeing in the spring, and ice dyeing in the fall/winter for me. Lol.)
You got such striking colours on your silk. Great job with the ice dying. I love the yarn mop from under the silk. It turned out so gorgeous, but it's too bad it won't stop bleeding.
Beautiful! Ice dyeing note from someone who uses mainly fiber reactive dyes: when there's visible clumps of dye after the ice melts, you put on another layer of ice, and a sprinkle of soda ash for good measure. Hope this is helpful when you ice tie dye shirts 😊
I'm in love with the colors you got with in this one! I've been avoiding silk bricks because 1 oz silk caps went waaaay further than I thought they would. but now I'm thinking about it lol.
I was thinking that if you had used a metal pan underneath the ice dyeing you could have put it directly onto the heat without complete mixing from the transfer process, but because the fuchsia ended up so vibrant and the turquoise kept bleeding I think it wouldn't have made much of a difference in this case. It's definitely something to keep in mind if you ever do a layered ice dyeing like this again!
I had to laugh when you said it was going to be a "scorcher"... My brain immediately thought "define scorcher"..🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Here in central California we've had days up to 116° so far this year & August is NORMALLY the "hot" month. 🤷 I love those colors!! 😊 Definitely looks like a tie-dye! I especially love the stroll, those deep colors call to me, but I think I would not have poured the excess color over it & used another mop..
What a great video, Rebecca -- All three of the skeins came out looking good. My heart broke when you said you wouldn't sell the yarn due to the bleeding, though. The skein as it finally appears is a gorgeous blend of my favorite colors, and I would have snapped it up as soon as it hit your shop! Keep up the great work :-)
I had a lot of bleeding with the blue when I did this also. I heat set mine in my car, so I'm glad to see it wouldn't have changed anything if I'd steam set it. Your silk came out beautiful!
Well, this video is sure timely, Rebecca. I'm having a similar experience with bleeding that Will. Not. Stop. Just like in the video, it'll look clear at first and then let loose as soon as I add soap, but the color on the yarn isn't fading at all. Have you taken another shot at getting the turquoise to clear, or do you think you'll just have to remember to wash any future FOs separately?
I always recommend washing FO's separately for the first few washes just in case. (Just like you would wash dark jeans on their own at first or commercial red socks etc.) I haven't tried washing this yarn again but I may try at some point.
I saw a tie-dye video in which the dyer froze her dye solution in ice cube trays and then placed the dye ices on the shirt she was dyeing. That might be fun with yarn, too.
Paradise Fibers included the silk in their Fiber of the Month club (which they send me for free every month - I'm unboxing on live in a little over an hour!) You can find the silk here: Paradise Fibers Mulberry Silk Brick - www.paradisefibers.com/products/paradise-fibers-grade-a-mulberry-silk-brick?rfsn=1409154.1a55f4&.1a55f4 (Affiliate link)
Can that dyed fiber been steam set in an aluminum pot? I understand why immersion dyeing can’t be done in an aluminum pot, but haven’t see anything about steam set?
I think you could try steaming it. I have used an aluminum pot to dye with food coloring (not a thin disposable pan, a thick pot.) I'm not sure if it would degrade the pot over time or not.
I think that maybe if you had presoaked the SW Yarn in vinegar water before placing it under the silk yarn, it may have soaked up the drippings better, and struck.
Maybe! I don't think that would have prevetned the bleeding. I added a lot of vinegar after it collected the melt (I didn't want things to strike too fast) but it was surprising that hours outside still had so much dye left.
I have ice dye silk scarves for years using Dharma acid dyes and I heat set them in ziplock bags in the microwave for about 3 minutes. I have also done the same with yarn. Turquoise dye is the worst for bleeding though!😫
I'd love to see this silk spun, Rebecca! If not in a video where we get to watch the process, then at least the final product! It's beautiful :)
I plan to do some kind of vlog or something with it. I like filming clips of spinning.

Thank you! I know there is a way to felt... oh maybe it is wool into silk scarves I'm thinking of.

I need to get some perforated pans for sure! I plan to get a few more pans once we set up better storage shelves for drying dyeing stuff.
Oh Rebecca this was so interesting to watch. I loved the darker yarn so sad it was bleeding. I enjoyed this ice dying very much, thank you. Great job!
You're very welcome!

Great idea! And thank you!
I love that you went with my idea about putting the yarn in the bottom of the pan, under the ice! Thanks!
In the past I put the yarn into the melt water after the fact when there wasn't enough coverage, so this worked out nicely!
great idea using the litter box and basket

Soda ash is too harsh on animal fiber, but adding acid (citric or vinegar) and anoth3r layer of iice cubes could dissolve the clumped dye.
Great tip!
oohh would love to see you spin the silk and the yarn mop turned out beautiful!
THank you!

I haven't tried silk caps before, just hankies. :D
Adding a vote for wanting to see a vlog of you spinning this. It's going to be stunning.
YAY!!
Perfect timing! I have been soaking my silk brick for 3 days and had planned to ice day it today! Your video will help me a lot!! Thank you!
WOOHOO! Have a lot of fun!
I’m super impressed with color vibrancy! Can’t wait to see how you test the colors further 😍

I think the metal pans aren't quite as wide, but I haven't tried setting the basket in them. I wish I had done that!
Oooh! It’ll be exciting to see the yarn this creates! 🌟
I have to decide how I want to spin it! I wonder if I might blend it with something or not...

My in-laws are from Texas so their definition of scorcher is much higher than mine. ;) But they get a kick out of getting the kids to say it.
These are my favorite colors! I love this yarn
Thank you!

Thank you! I think it is the nature of turquoise colors, whether it is acid dyes or fiber reactive dyes.
I bought some blue hand dyed yarn. The socks dyed my cream nylon nightgown blue!
Oh no!!!

Beautiful. I have done ice dying on cotton with fiber reactive dyes with great success. I will try it with acid dyes.
I need to try it with fiber reactive dyes!
This is so awesome
Thank you!
I saw a tie-dye video in which the dyer froze her dye solution in ice cube trays and then placed the dye ices on the shirt she was dyeing. That might be fun with yarn, too.
This would be fun!
I love the colours on the silk, and the original and final colours on the bleeding skein. Maybe it's the shade of the dye?
I haven't explored the P.F. turquoise dye in depth yet, but other brands this color can be a huge bleeder.
I need to see you spin this silk. I would also love to see your attempt to dye and spinning the Mythical "Golden Fleece"
I'm not sure if I'd do it on a stream or do a vlog about it. I'm bad about editing my vlogs on a regular schedule!
Have you tried making icecubes of foodcolors mixed with water? Do you think that could work for dyeing yarn?🤔 Thank you for another great episode😃
I haven't tried it specifically, but it should work great. I have used popsicles and ice pops for dyeing, which are very similar. ;)
@@ChemKnitsTutorials Fun🎉Then I think I have to try it👏😃
I wonder if you could have thrown the yarn into a pot with a year mop if it would have sucked the extra dye out.
Maybe, but sometimes some of the things that come back out I wonder if they're soluble or not.
So fun! Would it be possible to use jacquard acid dyes to do this?
Absolutely! This would work with any type of acid dyes.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials Thank you! So many possibilities so little time 😂
Funny technique! Can you make a video with the silk spinning? Ciao🇮🇹
I plan to! It likely won't be for a long while, but I will do some kind of vlog when I spin it

Turquoise dye is so pretty but so frustrating at times
Do you use vinegar or soda ash?
@@lisafoucart7281 I use vinegar with the acid dyes.
I am just finishing up spinning my silk! I have 1 oz to go.
woohoo!!
So what did you do with the silk fiber?
I plan to spin it at some point, I haven't had the chance yet. :D
Will the silk stain the spinner's hands?
I don't think it should. I'll spin this myself at some point and report back. I did remove all of the globs so I don't expect it to crock.
Are your icecubes made with h2o and vinegar?
nope - just water
@@ChemKnitsTutorials thanks. I wonder if that would make any difference. ..do you feel like doing the experiment for all of us?
Yarn mop says BI PRIDE!
Sure does!!!
I expected you to add vinegar.
I did add vinegar after an hour or so. I forget if it was 1-2 hours. There was vinegar in the silk presoak.

What are "Things Rebecca Hates Saying" for $100 please
LOL. Oh man did this make me laugh.
