@@ChemKnitsTutorials I started with Wilton Food gel dyes and still use them but I really like acid dyes for wools. I have a lot of towel wt. Cotton yarn and dyes some the other day and really didn't like the outcome. I like the mercerized cotton colors; UT I don't like the way the unmercerized cotton comes out with the Procion dyes. There is no shine to them.

This was very insightful. It definitely seems like the single ply glazed better. It would be neat to see various colors under the same top glaze done on the single ply. Also that hot pink with navy is so lovely 🥰
I want to do more layering glazing over multicolored again. I went for just black because it is a little easier to see and now I have some conditions to use with different colors.

The Muse yarn from the second True Black glaze method reminds me of a foster kitten we had a while back. He had a white undercoat with black tips on his fur. Apparently that coloring is called black smoke. (In 20+ years of fostering, I'd never seen it before.) That Muse yarn is just as gorgeous as he was!

I bought a skein of Stroll and, in person, I'm really uninspired by the color, so I unwound it and I'm definitely using this for reference for overdyeing it! Thanks for sharing your experiments and adventures lol!

Rebecca, think on this: the yarn may be working as a semi-permeable membrane. the dye molecules are different sizes in different dyes. so, i think i will try using white yarn, the same yarn for each color, and see if low concentration of dye + high concentration vinegar + high heat + wet skein = a white yarn with a colored halo. i also thought about the differences between different fibers so i might do the whole thing with wool and mohair and see if that does it too. my theory is that the larger molecule dyes will make a better glaze than those with smaller molecules.
The chemistry of how the colors bind to yarn is not just a function of the molecule size, although that could have something to do with it. It likely has more to do with the functional groups and how tightly they are able to bind to the yarn. (Although this is just conjecture!)

Yay 300! Congrats. Ive used a darker grey at a .25 % DOS on a higher twist yarn and got glazing…I let yarn cool then I dunked in a pot with a pink before and it still had a good glaze! Have you tried this yet? I know you said it’s harder to do darker than lighter but it seemed to work. I wish I still had that yarn I made and took pics 😭 Id love to see you try it too.

I have a question, I do have photoshop, if I find a color I like from there, and have the percentages of CMYK is there a way to turn that into a dye color mix to have that color match by using those same percentages do you know?
Alanna Wilcox has a technique to match any Pantone color. I think that the hard thing about CMYK to the color exactly is that each dye brand has a slightly different potency, so it would need to be adjusted a bit. I'm really excited for Alanna's book to come out.

I did get a few other tri colors that I liked. I have noticed some just seem super strong over others. I will look her up too.. thank you for that! This has just been a super fun process to learn. I tried her formulas for things for the second time and all dyes were exausted except for my blacks. So improvement! Yea!!! I also realized that you really don't need to use a lot of dyes either. A little bit goes a long way. I think my 8oz dyes will last me a lifetime hahaha!

Oh goodness, yes. I've definitely done a base color tonal and then speckled over it. There was a painting inspired one when I did a pastel underlayer with black speckles I love. And a few others I'm not thinking of off the top of my head.

Yes, it was just water in the presoak, no acid. In cold water, the dye molecules aren't moving around as quickly. So this could mean that they very slowly come into contact with the yarn? I'm not sure!
I've gotten a glazed feel when I've done sun dyed wilton's violet, wilton's black, and wilton's orange in balls. They had a halo of pink/red on the outside of the ball before settling in. I've also gotten it from Lion Brand Fisherman's Wool when I haven't pre-scoured it so the lanolin hasn't been removed.
My water runs true neutral to slightly alkaline so I have to use more acid to get "normal" Chemknits results, so I think I was using a teaspoon/5 ml vinegar to 2 cups of water over a 20 g mini. The results were typical in that the red was more around the outer layers getting bluer the further in it went.
It would be GREAT if you would comment on the various atributs of the brands and colors of different dyes you have experienced such as breaking, speed of striking, in cold verses watch warm dye baths etc.
Is it just me, or does it seem easier to glaze a singles? There was a DyerSupplier (I think) fingering singles (don't think they have it anymore) that almost always seemed glazed when I tried to dye it. Part of me wonders if there are more free little fibers sticking out on the surface of singles that grab the dye. Your purple is just gorgeous!
It is MUCH easier to glaze singles. They're thicker, so there is inherently more resist in the twist to begin with. Super thin single don't have a lot of interior space, a speckle could go all the way through the strand.

I've had the same thing happen when cold vat dyeing with wilton's violet and wilton's black. Which really threw me since red strikes faster.
Violet is good for glazing. I"ve found that with super high acid, some of the breaking almost reverses which is something I need to investigate more.
