    • @mattferrara1970
      @mattferrara1970 3 роки тому +4

      Immanuel Kant You are probably confusing the applied dynamics for his age. Regardless of age, it is an allemande. Should be played with a light and slurred flow. It’s not to say that Bach can’t sound good or be enjoyed in other ways of playing that also include aggressiveness, but Schiff’s playing requires more energy due to the perceptive dynamics and fluctuation in mood unknown to Gould’s playing. Or anyone’s interpretation of the bulk of Bach’s works for that matter. He is also like few composers, in that you can hear the age of many interpreters and preformers, but not Schiff. He has been valiant in maintaining his youthful playing.
      Music should not and is not simply based on energy but with moderation too. And Schiff displays magnitudes of it. Gould plays Bach like its 1 tempo 1 genre 1 way 1 volume. I also like his playing. It has stability to it.

      @@AaronGlenn88 that's so true. If you take a vid of your hands playing it from the above you might believe it's fake for for so many notes heard your fingers seem to barely move on the keyboard. Sometimes studying this I had to remind myself "don't move it keep your hand there", for it was the easiest way out than it seemed on the pentagram. I can recall my composition professor telling us about "being lazy" in counterpoint; the laziest way is the most elegant. Thing is it takes years to become lazy enough. (I wrote "counterpoint" and not "music" on purpose, so it already goes on to another level of dedication and study).

      @@ivanmisurecmouseproduction493 you better get your butt back on the piano and open that score! :)
      Remember that piano is a discipline. As you work through a piece try to use both hands as one unit, and consider it is more than fingers, sometimes you pronate your wrists and lean into notes, some times you simply point, or tap, try to use your time not only to learn the notes in order, but seek to understand how your hands work, you are in absolute control of your body, -go slow and discover your own technique- always balance strong stable finger choices, with efficiency, and also what feels natural to you. When you can balance the three you will find your sweet spot. Also, try doing only one measure and work through until it’s memorized, then add note by note for the following measures, block out in segments, and reset your hands for phrases. I know you can do this! Just don’t give up!:) I hope this helps:)

    First of all, Andras, your playing is wonderful and inspirational. Thank you for all you contribute to music, and especially to the understanding of our dear friend, Herr Bach. Now: I have a question. You probably don’t read these, but if you do, it would sure help me if you could find a moment to respond. I understand if it’s too overwhelming to do that in UA-cam comments! Apologies aside, here it is: how important is the edition from which you play? I have two editions. One is the one you’re playing, which seems to be much older. I downloaded it from a free site. It may be the original edition; you’d know better than I. The other version is a Schirmer edition, and since it’s part of their huge Bach collection, it has no commentary from the editor. Doesn’t even say who edited it. I’m guessing Hans von Bülow or Czerny. It’s substantially different in places. I learned the old one first. Then after buying the Schirmer collection (641 pages!) I thought maybe it was the more accepted edition, because I have heard many performers play that one. So, I learned it instead. Sometimes I play a mixture of the two. Which edition do you recommend? I’m not a literalist for authenticity, but I’d prefer to be as close to Bach’s thinking as possible, and these two editions sound like greatly differing moods of the same composer. I’d love to know what you have to say about editions in Bach.

      Straight from my piano literature college lecture notes: Henle, Barenreiter, and Weiner are good editions with no markings added except for what Bach himself wrote in the score (these are called urtext editions). For a student score with helpful suggested markings/fingerings the ABRSM editions are good. Alfred is also a good edition. Beware of editions made in the 19th century where editors added many markings trying to romanticize Bach’s works- I might be leary of czerny’s edition. And YES editions do matter! A piano performance major in college would likely choose Henle- but if I were giving a piece to my student I would use Alfred because of the commentary, finger numbers, and articulation ideas which can be very helpful… I might use that in college too.

    The best tempo for the Allemande is M.M. 40... There might be some numerological meaning in this, a number of the Queen of Pentacles, and also of the Kon, very prominent in Christianity religion of the times. Mary, or Marah was called Queen of Heaven, and Most Holy Mary, by some... the deity, Barbhelon or C'penta Armai'j, called Faith-Devotion has been removed, however, a Saviour deity- currently, Viraj is the closest deity still in Hierarchy. This tempo might seem slow; one should keep in mind the great Seligkeit inherent in such music; that Bach achieved the level of Saint, in development; ist in Wirklichkeit ein Heiliger geworden. The rasa or mood of the music is Second Decan Aquarius, however- called Earned Success. So also for us, the deity Christ having also been removed, along with the religion Path, Christianity, Necewef is the closest deity actually in Hierarchy- both of these two best conceptualized as of the Pagan or Animism religion Path, or something Anterior, including Gnosticism. Birth into the Pleroma- this refers to a comprehensive Self-Realization, or blessed absorption. "The Mind's Road to God"- a St. Bonaventura, at least the title is very good, but we shouldn't recognize the erroneous conception of there being portended a renounced, celibate, elite vocational priesthood order; one of the Parenter Type religions, was only for such Types...

    Schiff hears some of this music very differently than I do. For example, in completely eschewing rubato in the allemande, he sacrifices the expressive potential in the music. There is a whole panoply of deep feelings there that can only emerge with shaped phrasing, and at a much slower tempo than the one Schiff chooses (true of his sarabande, too). Compare Nikolayeva's allemande: ua-cam.com/video/Ol4oje1B8dk/v-deo.html. See too, on the harpsichord, Pierre Hantaï : ua-cam.com/video/J2rQtGtxpOw/v-deo.html; or David Cates: ua-cam.com/video/EkFYn1EWdPA/v-deo.html; or Blandine Rannou: ua-cam.com/video/01J1FWoCxm0/v-deo.html. Be honest to yourself and tell me if what you wrote is objective in any way and/or if it brings to the table some rational counterargument to what I wrote.
      As I wrote before (in case you missed that) the bass line at 0:21, far from being "too far from the original theme", is an almost exact diminution of the initial bass line (Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb) and it works perfectly as a recapitulation since it also marks a brief return of the initial key of the piece before the final part of the section. And to address your final assumption about me "trusting Schiff's rendition just because he is a public figure" I don't even like him that much as a pianist, the the only reason why I replied to you was because I found his interpretation of that passage musically cogent, and unlike you who undoubtedly "play and hear for yourself" I could actually give an objective argument for it that didn't rely on sandwiching my interlocutor between unwarrantedly condescending opinions and falsely courteous emojis.
