► What would happen if you were able to leave town without getting a starter? Today, I'll be testing out and seeing what happens when I hack Pokemon Red and Blue and X and Y for the nintendo 3DS to see how the game reacts when I encounter pokemon without having a starter!

Well, pokemon are genuinely dangerous. There’s so many pokemon that could kill. Going into the grass and encountering one would be a quick death. But pursing a gang and taking down their operations when you’re armed with pokemon and putting them against each other is much better odds for your survival. Especially since majority of the battles are just 1v1

What I assume happened in gen 1 when you went up top: The trigger for Oak to take you to his lab stretches across the entire upper border of town instead of just the grass. When you step into this border, oak has a set "order" of steps he's supposed to walk which puts him right in front of the player. Oak doesn't have collision in this section, which explains why walks through your roof. After Oak finishes his spiel, he's supposed to take you back to his lab. However, the game assumes you're in one of those 2 patches of grass, and when you're not he doesn't know where to take you.
Clearly that Mega Bulbasaur is named Pikachu to fool enemy players into thinking you're sending out a Pikachu, so they'll swap in a Ground type, weak to the Bulbasaur. Exactly as keikaku.

@@melody_florumI can't argue with that. I remember as a kid being super scared that M' would appear any time I used Surf and ruin my savefile. So I knew the game was glitchy even back then. Ironically, I think the glitches actually has helped keep the interest for gen 1 alive

@SpiralY Technically, the Flash is faster than it took the teleporting character to activate the teleportation. The teleportation itself was instantaneous, the motion to do it was not.

So in X, it seems like it just sets all the flags and values to the max, making it shiny, mega, etc. And since there's no 999, they loop it back to 001 Bulbasaur. Not sure about Pikachu, though.
I believe they have assigned an ID to each pokemon, they dont necesserily require the number to be equivalent to the pokedex. I guess the devs just felt pikachu should be nb.1

Eliweed More likely all the flags don’t exist, they’re null, which can’t exist in the system. So it goes with one less than zero, which is a negative number of course and causes it to loop up to the highest value available. Like old games.

I also "got" that Bulbasaur in Pokemon Y, when I had to do a double battle and only had one pokemon. The game "gave" me Bulbasaur so I could battle, but I couldn't control Bulbasaur (and it didn't do anything else than stand there) and the AI trainers only attacked my pokemon and ignored the Bulbasaur. It was wired🤣 But after your video I understand why it happened😊

We finally cracked the code. Pikachu mega evolves into a game-breakingly strong Lv. 999 shiny “Bulbasaur.”
It’s so strong that it refuses to fight or even be acknowledged as an existing Pokémon. Damn.

While it could be missingno, there are far more glitch Pokemon other than just missingno. You can get a lot of these effects without using cheats actually! Refer to MissingnoXpert for info, he doesn't make stuff anymore but it's really interesting

My idea for what happens in the gen 1 games is that there is a specific section of memory inside the game for the pokemon in your party. Because you have no pokemon, the whole of the memory's offset is permenantly wrong so the game reads junk data from where your pokemon should be in memory.
my totally educated guess is that the devs used that shiny bulbasaur for general testing reasons, it is what many devs do, just give yourself something OP at the start of the game and then test out what you wanted to. they might have just kept it in the game for a reason, but made it so that you can't use it anymore, that would also totally explain the name "Pikachu", they just named it that
Its bulbasaur because the game looks for a pokemon and either starts with dex no.1 or searches for dex number 1e+3 or something which would also be bulbasaur since all blank pokedex hexs are bulbasaur.
At least thats why it was bulbasaur in gen 3 and 4, the cry was some other random pokemon too, the game is just looking for data that it isn't getting basically.
