- Following a school shooting Thursday in Perry, Iowa, that injured at least five people, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis offered his support to Iowa but said dealing with shootings “is more of a local and state issue,” declining to suggest any changes to federal law he’d support that would make shootings less frequent.

@@turbojaxx1641 Exactly. Depression, PTSD and homelessness are the symptoms of systemic failures. The leading causes of homelessness in the US is lack of affordable housing, affordable healthcare, bankruptcy because of medical debt, domestic violence and yes, addiction.
Half of the boys that I went to high school with had shotguns or rifles in their vehicles. School shootings were completely unheard of. The uptick in gun violence is more about failure to teach people right from wrong and hold them accountable.

What are stronger background checks? Do people not know whats already in place? When DUI's became a problem we focused on the people and made stricter punishments for the people, no one ever addressed or even mentioned cars. Why do people think guns are a problem? Kid was 17 and mentally ill. He was prohibited from even possessing a gun. He was on a suicidal mission. He also had a homemade bomb. Also illegal. The laws are already there. He broke them; Just like he would break any other laws.

You can't get a straight answer from the Harvard and Yale educated governor that was raised by Italians in the Florida beach town of Dunedin, Fl while wearing his cowboy boot costume in Iowa. His very, very ineffective Florida gun policy lead to the recent stand off and death by shooting of Steven Clark Jr. of Ocala after he pointed a gun at law enforcement in the conservative town of Ocala, Fl on 12/31/23. Tina Clark, mother, blames law enforcement for their failed effort to get her son psychiatric help by using Florida's "Baker Act" on that life changing afternoon. His answer for Florida school safety is for training teachers in fire arms to defend students from shootings by people who are not required to have gun safety training before carry a loaded gun.

IT IS NOT THE WEAPON! IT IS THE MENTAL HEALTH OF THE YOUTH. If American's forfeit their right to bear arms, we put every citizen in the country at risk along with democracy. That fact unfortunately trump's everything else. Even the deaths of these poor children that lost there lives today do to someone with mental health issues. Terrible tragedy for these parent's.
So we screen every gun owner for their mental health history and monitor the mental health of their children? What do you propose we do about gun owners’ mental health?

It's been 5 years since our last school shooting. After the Marjory Stoneman Douglas shooting they moved quick to make sure there are armed teachers or guards in every school.

Baker Act is misused. It's used as a revenge tool. It's terrifying. My neighbors called the police on another one and said she's crazy. There was no proof and the fact that she was so upset because she wasn't crazy made it worse. 3 big male cops and one 5'3, 74 year old beanpole. The nurses told her that about 40% of the people taken in are normal, but they have to stay for 72 hrs. Imagine not being able to call your boss. She died, but it was sad.
So, having an overreaching act doesn't work. We've had it years. Useless. Oh, and it's forever on your record. Police and background checks. Ugh

Ron DeSantis said in this interview that, "You see some of the homeless that are on the streets in some of these cities; that's a mental health problem, that's not a lack of housing.". The people are homeless because of mental illness? I think many of those homeless will argue that point.

I think many of those homeless would smear their feces on you...but that's probably a gun's fault.
As a psychologist who worked for 25 years in the public sector in LA County, I can say that from our patients and from what I saw over much of LA the problem was not that these folks could not find a home. It was that almost all of them had serious addiction problems and or had obvious mental illness.
Why then do so many "homeless" turn down housing when offered and choose to remain on the street? Along with the mental illness is rampant drug addiction.

mental health is hard to measure. some Kids have been bullied and they are hurt and angry.. Their parents are unaware of it. a few are in the early stages of schizophrenia and reject medication even if they see a doctor..You can't mandate that everyone take a mental health exam. We have abdicated our responsibility to keep children safe. That isn't an oversight. It is a conscious decision..

Not the new norm, just that gun control clearly isn't working and isn't the solution so we need to get over it and stop wasting our time and effort on the false promises of gun control. Lack of laws against criminal behavior isn't the problem, so new laws aren't the solution. Enforce what we have instead of virtue signaling with empty political gestures that have no teeth. You can't strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

He never states how to approach school shootings. Why not provide additional layers to help protect our children in schools. Better locks, bullet proof glass, more policemen resources on campus, possibly a gated access. Then they can work on other ways to address mental illness or whatever they think is the cause of the shooting. But in the meantime, address immediate ways to protect children and teachers.
Prevention is the key. Everything is politicized even in the public school system. They spend money on security, but the people they hire do not patrol as much as they should to deter these criminals. Often, you would see them at their desk or cellphones watching videos or doing online games!
Really, it's not the number of security officers, but how efficient and dedicated these people should be.

Ron DeSantis has the charisma of a wet blanket. His answer to the first question led him to talk about himself rather than expressing condolences to the families affected by the shooting. His response is so revealing about his character. I hope he is forced to drop out of the race after the Iowa caucus.

A teenager that could not legally own a gun, potentially, and then we are trying to put more laws in place - stupid. A law, other than holding parents accountable for knowing their children and being prosecuted for their child's actions will never work. Parents need to be put in the hot seat and actually be parents and take an interest in their kids. No federal law will prevent this from happening - bad people will always do bad things

I would never do something like that. This guy today walked in to a school with a pump shotgun and a pistol and shot a few folks, killed a 6th grader, and took his own life.
