John Smith YES! Love it when he does that. It has to be SO loud and I'm pretty sure he took the protective shielding out of his pickups to get that kind of raw feedback.
Every time I re-watch this it brings back the memory of me waiting 7 hours at the very front of the barricade and getting through other bands before Brand New finally came on stage. And when they did, and performed, it shook my fucking soul like nothing else.
@@danielcharlton5159 at Bonnaroo we would huddle around each other with our backs to the guy in the middle and he would piss in a Gatorade bottle. I was alone waiting for the chili peppers all day to be up front. I noticed a few people around me after every set that stayed( they had the same idea) and they were in a larger group. Other people would just piss openly. Bonnaroo was a farm mind you.
The thing with seeing Brand New live is that it's never really the same experience twice. A setlist might be the same but depending on the crowd, the setting, their mood, it could go a lot of different ways. Having seen them 3 times at this point, I think the best way to describe them live is that they kind of make sculptures out of sound. They have a lot of texture in their guitar tones and their songs, and it's really evident live. For a lot of people it could just be noise, which, I get that. There's some bands I've felt that same way about. But for many others, it's the band really putting their emotion and energy into pure sound and spontaneity, not just necessarily playing the song through "as-is" on the album. Given that they've been a band 15 years, it's something to be admired I feel.
Marcus Martinez Thanks for sharing. I agree that their live songs are not copycats of the album, which I like. Just shows how even they interpret their songs a little differently every time. I've only seen them live (not on UA-cam :)) once, but when I did, it really felt like they were just playing music for themselves, like they opened up a private jam session for us to experience with them. While I was bummed that they didn't interact a ton with the audience at that show, I did really like the way that, like here, the songs flowed into one another and felt very personal and visceral. It was an experience-that's really the best word for it. I've always loved that about Brand New-they're genuine in that they don't need validation from fame, awards, anything like that. They make music because they need to, because they're artists, and we are fortunate indeed that they share it with us. It's truly all about the music for them.
Marcus Martinez I think you're right, but when people want to singalong to every line as if the songs going to be done the same way as on the album it really ruins the song and in some cases to me anyways. When they want to change it tweak it Elaborate on certain parts words and notes people trying to sing takes something away from that and makes it sound like fucked up noise and they aren't realizing what's happening. That's my experience anyway. They fuckn rule..just they can't always come away with the sound they intend to when the crowd is like that.
Omg, he looks so damn happy during Seventy Times Seven. I was there and I can honestly say angrily screaming to that song was one of the most amazing things ever.
oh gosh I have watched this too many times..i just want to see Brand New again! Even though I destroyed my shoes and got caked in mud that was the best show I've ever been to. Cannot wait to hear their new album and possibly see them play again.
Amazing. Been listening to Brand New since 2005, this is the first time I've seen a live video of them. "Play Crack the Sky" is still my all time favorite :)
This will never not be my favorite concert set ever. Really sad they're breaking up this year but the effect this music has had on me will never lessen.
Brand New became my favorite band, for obvious reasons, when my brother introduced me to their music before he deployed back in 2007. I've listened to their music everyday since that day and I could really relate to a lot of their lyrics. When they played in Chicago I knew that I had to go, and this became the best concert I have ever been to and will ever go to, although La Dispute was a very close second! The fans of Brand New are awesome, the way we stick it out through the rain and the mud just to sing along to Brand New's majestic music. Thank you very much for recording their whole set list, truly amazing!
Noro, Vices, Sink, Gasoline, & At the Bottom are my favoriteBrand New songs but I really do like EVERY single song they have, this band puts out music that is pretty deep and the play on words and the brilliant analogies are just genius! Moves me like nothing else.
Jacquelyn I agree completely with your post. I've loved them since Deja Entendu and everything since but for some reason the songs in Daisy just resonate with me. Deep lyrics, dark music, and as you said brilliant lyrics.
Deja Entendu just feels like high school to me... They dug up some real experiences and put lyrics to them. I mean, Sic Transit Gloria... brilliant. Really one of my all time favourites.
I personally think Devil & God is their best work thus far, but Daisy has grown on me. There are a strikingly lot of similarities in song arrangements on the album to Modest Mouse's Moon & Antarctica (which the band admitted was an album they were listening to during recording) but I think the aggressiveness really works after repeated listens.
I've only been into them since December 2013, but Deja is amazing and so is Your Favorite Weapon. I still need to delve into Devil and God more and I've only heart the first 3 songs from Daisy. I really love their sound and progression.
I was here. Seriously magic memories. I got the lyrics from play crack the sky tattooed on me years later, I never really thought much as to why. But now I watched this and realized what a magical moment this was....damn!! Thanks for pressing record and putting this on UA-cam homie!!! 🤩🔑🎧🎸🎭
Man, I seriously appreciate you focusing so much on getting a quality video with great sound during a Brand New show. It's hard not to jump in that crowd, but your sacrifice has helped so many people see this. TTTTTTTTThanks bro!
I really like Daisy, I don't get why other people don't. Devil and God is their best work, but Daisy is pretty badass. Different people like different things, I suppose.
I love Daisy as well, probably more than Devil and God at this point. But it had to grow on me. Wasn't a super big fan initially, but the more I've listened to it, the better it's gotten.
i was second row between Jesse and Vin for this and it was genuinely the most amazing crowd i've ever gotten to be a part of. everyone was like one big family who's obsessively dedicated to Brand New. finally getting to see them live after listening to them for seven years was honestly the best moment of my life so far. thank you for recording it so we can all relive it again.
Thank you for posting this video! I wasn't able to catch their show in Asheville tonight so this allowed me another chance for a live show at home. What a gift!
I just love jesse's face during seventy times seven. he looks so happy! and I can see why! it must be incredible to have such a huge group of people screaming lyrics to the song that you wrote! he just looks like thats exactly where he belongs...up on that stage sharing with us what he has to say. to me thats just incredible.
Amaaaaazing quality video. Amazing quality show. This is so great! Any one else notice how much better Vin has gotten at singing? His voice is so clear and perfectly harmonized with Jesse's.
So happy to see this! Loved the set, loved their stage presence, one of the best Brand New sets I've seen to date. The mud did make things interesting.

Why don't people like daisy? I have been a brand new fan since day one, I have grown up and matured just like they have. I like all of Brand New's music, and I'm excited for whatever comes, even if it's lighter than Daisy. But, there is no arguing Daisy is a masterpiece in my generation of music.
I disagree, I'm 25 and loved them since day one as well. The lyrics weren't well put together at all, and I don't think Jesse even wrote the album. I think it's a beautiful album live but I wouldn't go as far as a masterpiece of my generation. All their albums before had such more meaning behind them with him having a song wars with another band. BN fan since 2000, and Daisy is my favorite album of theirs. Different sounds match different personalities, and as long as you find (or make) the stuff that resonates most with you, you're all good.
dvanaken89 The general consensus I've seen is that Daisy takes a bit of listening to before properly getting into and being able to appreciate fully. I think it's related to the darkness and rawness of the album, which can take a bit of adjusting to if you went into listening not prepared for that level of raw emotion
Agreed, 2 favorite of their releases (#1 is D&GARIOM). I like their early stuff too but it was music made for a phase in life. After Deja they just grew so much as musicians and really cemented their sound. Long point short, Daisy deserves better!
