Reported to the Navy Hospital on Subic Bay Navy Base in the Philippines in 1975 and had my car shipped over. Was driving by a bunch of Marines that were waiting for the Base Bus and I thought that one yelled "F_ _ _ k You" at me. Pulled over and walked up to them in my Dress Whites and demanded who yelled at me. They answered by telling me that it was a lizard and I said "Right " . Well I was very embarrassed when I found out that it actually was.
This one is in Thailand. We have also encountered them in many other places, such as right up on the Thai/Laos/Myanmar border, on the paradise island of Koh Samui and last week on Bali island, Indonesia, although the Bali ones don't seem nearly as vocal as their Samui cousins and aren't nearly as listenable as a result. The Thailand ones do have really good voice and people do say they are aggressive towards humans, so be careful out there, although I have not witnessed it at close hand, thankfully.....
Bob Sit Yeah Bob, I was at the upper MAU Camp at Subic in 77. Those lizards were hilarious for a FEW nights. Then it became just another thing to keep you awake besides the heat of the Quonset but....
Must have been an officer. I was stationed in Subic Bay as a barracks duty Marine in 76 77 and I can't imagine a sole Navy guy getting out of his car and challenging a crew of Marines about anything lol. I only remember hearing them when we worked the back gates and doing jungle patrol. I don't remember hearing them in Subic Bay itself.
When you are out in the dark someplace its sounds EXACTLY like F You at a distance and I have heard several at a time alternating. For the new guy on guard it can be "unsettling" until he figures out what it really going on.....
I remember these things in Vietnam, I remember them starting out with a low whistle increasing to an ear splitting whistle, the the sound of someone with a speech impediment saying fuck you. Another lifetime ago

Our NCOIC posted all newbies on the perimeter so they could meet the Tokay Gecko at night. They always thought it was Charlie taunting them! hahaha!

A good way to insult a unwanted visitor!
Someone once told me during the Vietnam War, American soldiers would keep these lil guys in their tent to do just that lol
