  • Steam Expo was just one of many incredible events that were part of the Vancouver's World Fair, 'Expo 86'. (officially known as the '1986 World Exposition on Transportation and Communication')
The Grand Parade of Steam commemorated the beginning of the two-week Steam Expo. Here you'll see many runby's of steam locomotives from across Canada and the US.
This is home video footage shot by my dad. I was only three years old at the time, but I do remember this incredible event!
NOTE: I am by no means a train expert! I was only able to piece together the details of each steam engine thanks to @WhistlepostWP for their upload of this same event and their detailed descriptions of the locomotives. (See their video here: • Video )
Intro music: "Freight Train Boogie" by Doc Watson

I'd long since forgotten this amazing steam parade! That fair was well worth going to from NYC.

Absolutely one of the videos I truly enjoyed watching!
Take it from a guy who has spent more than 60 years trackside, going back to the steam era.
This is not just any ordinary video, it’s a documentary.
Great angles, good color; the locomotives do all the talking.
I particularly enjoyed the descriptions in selected frames.
Also that the editing shows only what’s necessary.
A solid 10 in my opinion as a seasoned camera and video lensman with 30 years behind still and industrial movie cameras, with rail and transit photography in spare time for a lot of years.
Unfortunately, I didn’t get to attend the event; ans video to me, is the next best thing; congratulations for a job well done. mfj

Thanks!! Although all credit goes to my dad, an amateur camera operator who was shouldering a huge "portable" JVC camera well before smaller handheld camcorders came along.
      Glad you enjoyed it!

Steam Expo ended up being kind of a celebration of the lesser glamorized and up-date of steam locomotives - the ones that kept the feeder-lines going where larger engines couldn't reach. Although the glamorous Royal Hudson locomotive inevitably headed up the steam parade, the engines that followed were now treasured as gems of the past in their own right, and not flanked by the latest and most striking of railroad equipment as had been the case at previous railroad exhibitions held during the prime era of steam. Regards, Samuel Farris.

If you watch Steam Trains Galore 2, you’ll find Inyo’s whistle is a bit more quiet nowadays.

@mattskey1 Nope, Inyo just runs on lower-pressure steam nowadays, likely due to her age.

Does anyone else think Canadian Pacific 1201’s whistle sounds like Conway Scenic 7470’s Boston and Maine 5 chime?

I think they’re essentially the same whistle, a Nathan 5 chime copy. The NYC, D&RGW, and CB&Q also used them extensively.
