During breeding season, the birds can get through a whack of them. So now I just feed from November through to April. Just ordered my first batch, 500gr f large mini. That way will have plenty of time to grow and last longer, hopefully.
Little robin bugger, he scoffed the lot! I think other small birds could see them too, but Robins are aggressive wee devils. Got many pairs around my own garden in the highlands, very territorial too, but you got to love them. They sure enjoyed the pop-up Michelin 5* restaurant.
I designed and crafted a house sparrow-proof mealworm feeder that shown on a video on my channel, if you want to check it out sometime. About 3 minutes and 30 seconds into the video, a Carolina Wren shows a male house sparrow in the video how to retrieve a mealworm from the feeder.
I keep 3 different suet types out along with oil seeds and a mix of shelled seeds and nuts. There's pretty much something for everyone. With that, there are quite a few of my birds here that will partake in the mealworms but most prefer something else and most skip around some. Bluebirds and wrens are the biggest worm eaters, the wrens getting into a little of everything. The bluebirds exclusive on the mealworms. Good thing I raise them for the birds or I would have to get a second job to pay for all of them! lol
I put a seed mix out on the bird table and in the wire mesh feeders I put suet and peanuts and they have got two bird baths and occasionally I’ll leave mealworms out for the robin
I give a few of my live mealworms to birds every few days because my hamster is never going to finish a whole tub himself😂(i also give some to my chicken)
I wouldn't normally no. The live ones are full of moisture. The birds are happy with them dry too, although good to have a clean water source available for them if you are using dried.
Hi, if you keep them in the right conditions they can last several weeks. Between 8-10 degrees C in a cool dark place. It was really warm when I had them so they didn't last more than 10days and they shouldn't be fed to birds if they are not fresh any more. Last year my Blue tits started building their nests at the end of March. Can't wait! 😀
I love robins but they can be so possessive and such bullies…poor blue tit never came back during this film….lovely selection of birds tho! 👏🏻👏🏻
Wee Robin will end up fatter than a Christmas Turkey at the rate he's gobbling up the mealies. 🦃 Great video. 👍
You're right! Ate so many 😄. Thanks 👍

Robins are *always* first on the scene!

Sound like a great selection you have for the birds
@@ScottishWildlifeGarden I’ve been throwing seed on the roof and a woodpigeon is coming in the early hours of the morning

Which camera did you use? Thanks
Where do you keep the mealworms to thrive?
Hi Ana, I used a Nikon D3200 and Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.8G lens. I kept them in a cool dark place, they didn't last long though as the birds loved them 😀
Would you soak dry mealworms in warm water?
I wouldn't normally no. The live ones are full of moisture. The birds are happy with them dry too, although good to have a clean water source available for them if you are using dried.
Hi, how long do the mealworms last before turning into pupae? And if they do, can the birds eat those too? Loved the video 😊.
Oh and (sorry 🙄) when do the sparrows and the others start nesting?

@@ScottishWildlifeGarden That's great thank you. Oh yes, not long to wait now!
Where did you get the mealworms? And have you tried growing mealworms?
Hi Cheryl, I just bought them from Amazon! No this was my first experience, I'll probably get more for this year when the nesting season underway.
