The Smallest Bird you have ever seen

  • By accident I got hold of two of the smallest eggs I have ever seen.
    Should I incubate them?
Would I be able to raise a baby bird that would hatch from it?
The little bird is called a Wren. In my country it is the second smallest bird species there is. It hatched so fast that I missed it. The feeding was hard with my big human hands and very time-consuming. It took me about 80 feeding rounds per day to keep him healthy.
But in the end it worked.
For those of you who wish to support me and the channel, you can now become a Patron. It's only because of my supporters there that I can keep on doing what I do. We also have some nice exclusive members only content there:

The incubator I used is a MS incubator:

Dang me I love this channel. When I was a youngster I would gather baby birds from an old oak tree in our cul de sac that were lucky enough to fall onto a lawn instead of the hard roadway. I raised them with paper clip-tweezers and a bread and milk mixture until they fledged. Dad took super 8's of me walking outside as a dozen birds would fly from the trees and land on me! Still love them, watch them no matter where I am and have been involved in cleaning up oiled birds for years. Love this channel, looking forward to more adventures!

I hope he tries that whissle this winter. Wrens are home bound, and have a tendency to get attached to their cohabitants. I have a wren in my yard, and it comes to get me when there's a cat in the yard during nesting season. It calms down when I release my dogs (who in turn chase off the cat). Wrens are the coolest birds and they have wonderful songs too...
So there's a big chance if he whissles, the wren will come check out if there's food :)

Watching this, it makes you wonder how nature really manages to work itself out. Chickens? Ready to go, like half an hour out the shell. But most wild bird babies? Basically still fetus-stage creatures that need round-the-clock care to even have the slightest chance of survival. Nature's crazy. Also, a bit of a "super long, wild ride" story-time below if anyone is interested!?
I've had the honor of raising two Eastern Phoebe (in the "Flycatcher" family, and the amount of effort I've had to put in to filter out the F.R.I.E.N.D.S character is astounding LOL!) babies recently. My cat managed to climb the window screens and knocked down their nest.. A true miracle that he did not eat them all, as it landed face-down with the nest covering them against the concrete sidewalk.
There were 3 babies, but one unfortunately took the full brunt of the fall, saving the other two abd oassed away. I was obviously very upset by this because this Phoebe pair was here with us last year as well and successfully raised their clutch, before I adopted my most recent kitty, who was a stray and has a very high predatory instinct because of such. I don't blame him but at the same time, I was trying to deter him from such behavior now that he is with me and cared for.
My first instinct was to put them back (not such a good idea, since these birds build mud nests and I was using a wood-based planter as a makeshift, with the faint hope it would work to bring the parents back.. with no luck after 24+ hrs)...
Hours and hours passed, and finally I COULD NOT take it anymore. I stepped back outside and heard those babies crying out for food, AND it was chilly that night, and legit parental instinct kicked it. Grabbed my ladder, climbed, picked them up, and realized they were being invaded by ants!!! I panicked, brought them close to me and got inside for inspection. All good, thank god.. And as someone that has/does raise chickens, I had a small incubator, and immediately popped them into it. I placed them ever so gently into a piece of tupperware with paper towel and checked on them every half hour. Now, as as someone with a medical family/background, you know if you know we have supplies.. I had a suture kit and found the tweezers for such absolutely PERFECT to feed these poor babies.
So many helpless worms, moths, flies (stupid home invaders, die! LOL), butterflies, etc. have been victim to these voracious beasts! Many of which I've caught by hand when not bought from the fishing and/or pet department! LOL
I've rescued and cared for animals my whole life, but there is just something special about caring for birds especially that makes it all the more rewarding. I don't have children, but assume it'd be close enough to that. Feeding every hour or so, cleaning faces, cleaning poops, making sure they are warm and comfy..
The fact that both survived makes me so happy since they can snuggle together, which they often do, especially after a feeding!
Their future is stil tentative because they were raised with humans, BUT, so we will see as time goes.
