Shaun - thank you so much for recording this. I spent most of my career in Washington as a Ranger in the National Park Service. As it turns out, I worked at the Georgetown Waterfront Park and the Old Stone House. Both of which you taped. I also was the curator at Ford's Theater for a number of years. Seeing them through your eyes made me very nostalgic for those days of sharing the incredible history and wonderment of DC and of the US. Thanks again for exploring and recording your reactions and thoughts. It brought a tear to my eyes. Keep up the good work! ❤
They drain the canal every winter to prevent it from freezing and the ice damaging the canal structures. The original company that operated it did the same thing starting in the 1830s. That mural in the alley in Georgetown is reminiscent of what a lot of Georgetown was in the 1960s and 1970s when the area was transitioning from a poorer part of time to the gentrified area it is now. In the 1970s that area was what was known as a "head shop" where you could get all kinds of drug related paraphernalia, though no drugs.
Without President Lincoln we wouldn't have the United States that we know today. I love that Shaun is really digging into and understanding our history.
I lived in Washington DC area in the early 90’s when my children were in Elementary school. It is a great city for families where so many museums and parks were free.
Georgetown predates Washington itself. When the District of Columbia was carved out of Maryland to be the U.S. capital area in the 1790s, Georgetown was already there. "Washington City" just grew out and around it, subsuming it into the larger city we see today, which covers the entire District. Georgetown is the farthest up the Potomac River that you can take a boat or ship (Great Falls is just upstream). So, it was a convenient place for shifting goods from the interior into boats to sail down the river and eventually into the ocean. For that same reason, it was the southern end of the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Canal, which carried goods through the gap in the Appalachian Mountains carved by the river. The canal was one of the first ways to ship goods from the areas over the mountains, helping to link the East Coast with the Ohio River valley. It was fairly quickly eclipsed by the advent of the railroads in the 1840s, but it did play a role in opening the West.
I had a very good burger at Old Ebbitt Grill. A day spent at the National Gallery can work up an appetite. 😊

My husband took me to DC for my 60th birthday and we had brunch at Old Ebbitt Grill - loved the interior. Forgot what I had but he ate the Eggs Benedict. I had a bite and they were fantastic! We too were told Old Ebbitt Grill was a "must go to" DC destination!

Georgetown, Adams-Morgan, Dupont Circle, Kalorama, Logan Circle,... there are a bunch of interesting neighborhoods in DC outside of the Federal District.

You should have walked a bit farther down to Dupont Circle. That was my hang out years ago. Kramers bookstore and restaurant was my favorite place to eat, drink and check out books. That whole area is eclectic and cool to visit. Loving all your videoes ❤

My brother has been inside Ford’s Theatre and the house across the street - he says he felt a specific sadness and heaviness, especially in the house
I zoomed in on that menu to check if the prices were even listed. I was very pleasantly surprised that they were and that they are fairly reasonable considering the location.
I hope you were able to make some visits to the Smithsonians like Air and Space or Natural History. Both are great! There's also the Spy Museum. My personal favorite is a quirky private contemporary museum called Hirshhorn Museum.

The capital houses both the upper and lower houses. basically that day a huge vote was taking place. if you see the Black SUVs there that means its either a big vote or a bill is up for debate. that or a speaker was being chosen as Nancy Pelosi was stepping down to just be a vote.
That could have been when Zelensky visited before the Dems turned over the control of the house to the Repubs. This was clearly filmed around Christmastime and that's when he visited.
It was the end of last year - not sure what was going on. I assumed a normal Congress day

I stayed in Georgetown when last I visited Washington DC. When the canal is finished being dredged, come back and check out the canal boat tour. Lots of good restaurants and shops there. One of the best comedy clubs, The Capitol Steps, is in Georgetown. The political parody spares no conservative or liberal point of view. Saw a lot of DC for years, since both my cousins were stationed at the Pentagon at the end of their military service.
If you ever get to Boston, connect with me and bring your wife along to The Haven restaurant and Scottish entertainment venue in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston. Some of the best Scottish entertainment, food and and whiskey in Boston.

Thank you for bringing back memories from DC. Worked for many years at international organizations in DC while living in either Northern Virginia or in Maryland. Drove into the city every day come snow sleet or rain. Weekends in DC was Party Central until sunrise the next day. What a time.
The house across the street from Ford Theater where Lincoln passed was opened to visitors. There was a bedroom in the back of the house where he was put diagonally in a bed as he was tall and beds were small. Mrs. Lincoln spent the night in the front sitting room actually just waiting for him to pass early the next morning. The play they were attending at the theater was an English play called Our American Cousin.

Great video Shaun! I live in southwest Virginia...on the N.C. border. I have been very lucky in that D.C. is somewhere I have traveled to many times. I really love going there. Georgetown is an awesome place to spend the day...or even a few days. If you and Teka ever make it back to my area you should come for a day...or a few days...and I will make you my granny's meatloaf. Absolutely the best of southern cooking! Shaun, I enjoyed this video and it was fun to see the "Whitehouse" tree ornaments. I have an old friend that sends me the current year's ornament every year. I have about 30 of them now. They are some of my most prized possessions.

If you are able to enjoy the cherry tree festival next time you’re here in 2025 of (March to mid-April) it’s worth it. The Japanese gifted it to the people,of America in 1909.
There is a great restaurant across the street from GWU hospital and the subway station .
I'm still jealous of your trips to our capital city, Shaun! Like I said, I have been to Groton, Connecticut, which is part of the "northeast corridor" (Washington is part of the NEC) but I never went to NYC or Washington. I went to Groton for Basic Enlisted Submarine School and Sonar "A" School, and both had a rule that you have to be wearing your dress uniform to leave the base and must be wearing it when you return lol. I did take a road trip with some shipmates up to Ballston Spa in Upstate New York, however, we did not stop in NYC (NYC is south of Groton). So yeah, I want to make a pilgrimage to Washington DC at some point and would hope to visit Georgetown while there. Its definitely a famous and historically important area! 🙂

You seem to have a knack for visiting areas during crappy weather conditions. Always seems to be mostly cloudy and rainy. DC is best to visit during clear and sunny skies. Also nice clear nights with the beautiful lights is most favorable. It seems like you always strike out.

Shaun, study The Declaration of Arbroath. Then think of the conservative "BIBLE BELT" mindset of those "Highlanders" that immigrated into the U.S., including North Carolina, as my ancestors. Then think of the document claims of being Israelites of the Bible. Then think of the promises made to the Israelites IN THE BIBLE. If you google search "Scottish Declaration of Independence Israel" and read what pops up in the results, you'll know what I suggest is not that unusual.

Shaun, if you really want to learn more about Lincoln, then I HIGHLY recommend taking a trip to Springfield, Illinois. It is Illinois' state capitol but whereas Chicago has a population in the millions, Springfield has only ~130k population. However, it has EVERYTHING Lincoln! It also has the old state capitol building, which is where Obama gave his opening campaign speech. I hate the guy and think he was one of the worst presidents but history is history the good bad & ugly. If you do go there, DO NOT FORGET TO VISIT NEW SALEM, which are the restored ruins of the village where Lincoln spent much of his formative years. You will learn so much. Also do not forget to see his tomb. It is massive. Sooooo much civil war history there. Springfield is otherwise unremarkable but there's so much Lincoln stuff that you will be kept busy for a week if you really want to capture all the details and see all the sites. There's also an Italian restaurant just across the street from the old capitol building and the upstairs room in that restaurant is where Lincoln was first informed that he had won the election. The food there is also fantastic and highly ranked. I wish I could remember the name for you but you can't miss it just go across the street.
