I do prefer both, but in my worldbuilding setting right now I'm using spirits to power up spells, so animism it is. I really enjoyed your video, as always it was very enlightning and entertaining as well.
Hi, I love your channel. You discuss lots of fantasy related topics indepth with almost scientific approach. I'm surprised to see it's not yet that popular!
Thank you so much and welcome to my little corner of UA-cam 😃. Yeah I’m still battling the algorithm to get noticed 😂. Not quite a year old, but working on it!
I remember in the movie that the storm on Caradhras was something Satuman was doing to slow the Fellowship down. That made sense in the story. It's been a while since I read the book. I recall Tolkien referred to the "angry mountain" but I guess I interpreted that as an anthropomorphic metaphor. Interesting to think about it as an actual character. I realize I'm doing something like this in my world but I had not thought about all the levels and implications. Thank you.
I actually prefer the book version where the mountain itself is alive, but I have a weakness for genus loci :) And you are most welcome! Glad you enjoyed it.
You've gotten some wheels turning with this one! Are the kami/Anima usually limited to one animal? And nonhuman probably. Or a possibility for all things to carry such a fundamental spirit to be appeased or tapped?
I have animism in my world in that the planet is alive and favors those who act in a knowledgeable, skillful and ecologically respectful and sustainable manner and disfavors those who act in an ignorant, foolish, disrespectful and unsustainable manner - which I would argue that even our own world does, from a certain point of view. In addition, there are places of power within the landscape where power of some form is concentrated, whirlpools, cliffs with updrafts, high mountains etc. etc. The spirits of these places likewise favor and disfavor. For example, a high mountain might punish a disrespectful traveler by afflicting them with hallucinations from altitude sickness or snow blindness or hypothermia or an avalanche. It might favor a respectful traveler by revealing a mountain pass or a sheltered cave or a mountain goat for food etc. Even small things have spirts and can favor or disfavor. No rituals or worship need be performed, nor can you bribe the spirits with sacrifices to get them to do what you want. All that is required is “right action.” Resident Shamans who practice “right actions” and know of these areas of concentrated power can channel and concentrate or focus the power of place for good or ill against beneficial or offending parties! Also, in my world, a shaman’s knowledge of places of power and “right actions” is local and thus their power is local and diminishes as they venture from the area. Indeed, were they to venture into an entirely different biome, they would assuredly commit “wrong actions” and thereby incur the wrath of the spirits that inhabit the places of power in that place. So travelers had better be careful and befriend and learn “right actions” from the locals if they want to live for very long in my world. As I said, our own world functions in a similar manner. In our arrogance, we believe that we are its masters, but ultimately, Nature has the last laugh and her patience with her petulant unruly humans is currently wearing quite thin. To draw an analogy between the two was the point of building this “alternative” world.
Do you prefer animism as a source of power for magic or as a religion or both?

I mean :) Those are all good questions to ask :D
@@JustInTimeWorlds I might even have answers 🤣
The とう [romaji: tou] at the end of 神道 is more oo than ou. ou is pronounced weirdly in Japanese.
Thanks :)
