Am I the only one who almost passed out when Mike was carving the spire? I held my breath for SOOO LONG!! Great Job Mike!! I can't seem to turn a piece down much past 1/4" (6 or so mm). Always amazed by folks who can make a toothpick.
Thanks for the heart-start! Enjoy your work very much sir.
Rick Wilke Lol.....thanks Rick, I appreciate your kind words, and support my friend.

Beautiful box Mike, the finial is awesome. I had never turned ash before until recently, I made an ash bowl in a class I had the pleasure of taking from Jimmy Clewes. He happens to live here in Las Vegas and was offering classes to members of my local woodworking club. I really had no idea what to expect from Ash but it turned out to have some beautiful grain and figuring in it. Keep the awesome videos coming! I always love to see what you make next.
Braxton Wirthlin Thanks Braxton, you are one lucky guy to have seen Jimmy Clewes, he is an immensely talented turner and artist, and has a natural ability to teach as well.

I was alerted on Facebook, of all places, about your shout out Mike, and here I was thinking the sudden burst of new subscribers was due to my last video... :) What an amazing honor, coming from pretty much the first wood turner I've subscribed to when I decided to give the craft a try. And a second honor of being included in the same sentence with Al, a person I have much appreciation and respect for. So for all that, thanks.
I love the detail of the finial, you make it seem like an easy task.. that wobble in the end when you were finishing was looking edgy, made me think of these hollow tube with strings type of steady rest, I should make one of those too... the way you used your live tail stock with the live center without the pin as press for the finial was cool, I didn't understand what you were doing with that scotch bright pad until you reeled back the stock, I'll need to remember that one. Thanks for a great video!!
yuval lahav Thanks Yuval for your kind words and support my friend. Believe me when I say your talents are a joy to watch, and the "shout out" was well deserved.

Rich

Mike
Good to see the master at his craft! I"m sure I would have lost that one when you hit the knot! Something that I like about it is that when you have the lid on... it looks like a solid piece. Just so natural and all! ;>) I like also that you only use two tools! Wicked looking skew! And well used at that! ... (Oh yeah and the other two tools too!)
Thanks for Sharing
Larry
The Tiny Trailer Workshop So Larry, who's video were you watching then? ;)

Beautiful Finial work Mike,
Finials are something I haven't become very adept at making but they are definitely on my short list of turned items to improve at. I truly enjoyed watching the entire process and the close up camera angle was superb.
That was one thin lid but I think being so delicate makes the piece all that much nicer.
Regards,
Bob
RJBWoodTurner Thank you very much Bob, I really appreciate it. Finials are great fun, and rewarding, but do take some practice. Cindy Drozda is the girl to watch and learn from, of that there is no doubt. In my book she is the high priestess of fine finials :)
Take care
Mike
Thanks Mike. I am thinking about making some videos myself and yours always look very clear so I just wondered what you used.Keep up the good work!

Beautiful turning Mike and I love the skew.
I'm going to follow up your "shout outs" as I did with Albert Furtado. He's the most complete turner insofar as he also does a bit of blacksmithing by making his own turning tools.
The last competition at my turning club was for a segmented piece which I hasten to add I didn't have the nerve to enter. The judge was the demonstrator for the day and all of the entries were amazing but some lost points with him because of insufficient attention to the bases of their pieces.
I mention this only because it may be of help to beginners who may wonder why you added some detail your box base.
Best wishes,
Alan.
Alan Simpson Thanks Alan, always a great pleasure to hear from you mate. I'm also very happy to hear that you think these guys are very talented, they have so much to inspire us.
Never let it be said that I ever overlook a well finished bottom!
Take care
Mike
So delicate but amazing
Hi Mike, great finished item. Your videos are very informative. Personally I prefer to see the turning at real speed. Keep up the good work
Steve
woodturner21 Thank you, the problem with real speed is that the video would be 3+ hours long! So, editing has to be brought to bare ;) Thanks for watching and commenting.

Lovely work as usual Mike. Should i be using sanding sealer on all my pieces before apply a finish. Also what does your sanding sealer mix consist of. Thanks for the great video I always look forward to seeing you turn.
Mark
MARK Baid Thnks Mark, I always do seal the wood first, but maybe that's just me. I use a mix of Cellulose Sanding Sealer 3 parts, and 1 part Cellulose Thinners.
Thanks for watching mate
Take care
Mike
Very nice, Mike. Very delicate finial; I was glad to see that it was "replaceable".
It appears that the ash blank was about 50 mm square?
Bill Wells Thanks Bill, the blank was about 3" or 75mm square, give or take ;)

Is that a 3/8 spindle gouge?
I really need to get a good sharpening jig, not easy for a poor man like me LOL

Thanks Charles, yes mate is was my trust 3/8" spindle gouge, i also really like the 1/2" for less "fiddly" work :)
