  • The old MFI trailer that came under our 1999 TR20 project is in need of some serious repairs mechanically and structurally. In the video, we strip it down to the bare bones, fix a bunch of rust, bad welds, cracks and weld in an excessive amount of extra reinforcements to ensure we don't have ANY problems with it hauling in the future. Hopefully the video inspires you to check your older boat trailer over for any of the same hazards we've found on this one...
    Thanks for watching! If you have any questions or comments, please let us know down in the comments below! We would love to hear from you!

    I own the exact same boat but mine is a 2001. They look identical. Only difference is my trailor is a single axle. I've been following your project from the beginning. Look forward to seeing the finished project. Kentucky boy from Danville.ut

    Love this series man. Everything about it, it's nice to see guys working their asses off to fix up old stuff. Also, cherish these moments with the old man he appreciates it, and as you get older, you'll look back and realize how important these moments are. Can't wait for the vids to come.

    I did almost the same to my Triton trailer. It was a big job. Love the videos. By the way, you can get complete axel and springs from the trailer company down in Winchester TN.

    I am kind of doing the same thing with my bass boat trailer. My Bass boat is a 1992 nitro 160tf. So my trailer was upgraded to a heavier duty one, but is still single axle without brakes. That being said most of my issues are frame rot from the inside out. Are yoi doing anything to address that.
    I plan to remove the welded covers of the main rails at the back end. Then weld ears on the with tapped hole that slide in and drill a small hole in each side to put a stainless screw to hold them on. I am doing this so I can flush the inside of the trailer frame. It will also allow me to use a 1 gallon garden pump sprayer cut the wand in half. Use tubing as long as the frame to extend the wand. Then I can treat the inside of the frame every year with fluid film. So it stops rotting from the inside out.

      Yes, the extra gussets and fillets are to help with the soft spots. Depending on how bad the rails of the trailer are, it might be done for, really hard to say without seeing it.

    Amazing work you guys have done!
    I am just curious. With these kind of work, one could have bought a several old boats like this, or one brand new Triton. So why does anyone (assume the customer) want to pay for the long list of restoration works? The boat has clearly been neglected for a long time, so that rules out the sentimental reason from the previous owner(s).

      Hey Rui,
      Thanks for taking the time to comment! We are taking on this project as it is our own boat and we were (unfortunately) unaware of the issues at the time of purchase. We did however pick the boat up for a very reasonable price, which helps. A new TR-20 up here in Canada runs about $90,000 - $100,000 so putting some sweat equity into an older one will still have us at about 1/4 of the price of a new one.
      Thanks!
      Kyle

      @@FishingOntarioThat makes sense.
      I just wish you guys were in the Metro Detroit area😄. The lead time in marine repair shops around here is usually weeks or even months long. Every time I call them I have to wait at least few weeks to bring in the boat, and wait another few weeks without the boat. It just becomes ridiculous. It has also forced me to work on a lot of projects that I did not dare to take previously😅.

      @@FishingOntario I couldnt keep the caliper pistons from freezing up on mine. They would not retract, so the brakes were dragging a lot. I made a wedge and blocked the surge action on the tongue. No brakes, but no hot wheels either! Been like that for at least 20yrs.

      @FishingOntario  Рік тому +2

      @@russbrown3159 honestly, we obviously towed this rig 100 miles home with no brakes and no problems, so maybe just say F it! Lol
