My friend and I are in the Lion King musical for my middle school and my friends were angry they had to be grass so I yelled in the middle of rehearsal "BE ENERGETIC GRASS DANG IT!" and they died of laughter.
I feel like whoever plays grass in any lion king show, they become apart of a new cult, a new brotherhood. And when Mufasa says "When we die our body becomes grass and the Antalope eat the grass" like we kill Mufasa, we're the antagonists, fear the grass.
Meaning of the lyrics (based on what I remember from my research): The song is written in Zulu. “Zum zum zum/mama ye” is just an ad-lib, like a scat or something. It doesn’t mean anything. “Woza mfana”, means “play, little boy, play”. It’s a reference to how cub Simba skips around on the grass, following his father as he leads him up to Pride Rock through the savanna. The lyrics of “Busa” from the second half of the song seem to be familiar with everyone, so I won’t mention anything about that. It’s a very simple chant, but the way it is performed on stage is so haunting and beautiful.
I have seen the musical in London and I was particularly mesmerised by this piece. You can basically feel the spirit of Africa glowing from it, if you ask me.
I was originally put off by the strange combination Tim Rice, elton and John and Disney. How wrong I was. This is one of the best shows I have ever soon - don't miss it!!!
This brings back so many memories of being in a dance recital long ago. The theme was Africa/African animals, and my dance teacher used this song as the opening song and it was amazing to be in. And just last night, I went to see my school’s play of lion king, and remembered my dance recital when this came on. If I could turn back time, I’d do it all over again.
I played Nala one night and Sarabi the other night in my high school's production and this is literally my favourite musical ever. So much nostalgia ❤️
Maybe Marty was watching The Lion King Broadway, I would also throw a bottle at my child if he interrupted me right at the beginning of the TallGrass Tussle sample

I’ve seen the Lion King show a total of 3 times. Or maybe 4 I can’t remember. But this song right here, the music is what inspired me to learn African dancing. And I LOVE IT!
I would’ve liked if they included this in the remake as the soundtrack for the scene where Mufasa shows Simba the kingdom (“everything you see exists together in a delicate balance”). With more scenes of Mufasa showing Simba this and that around the Pride Lands.
Just finished my first week of rehearsals for this musical. I’m playing Shenzi, but I’m also in the ensemble for a few songs including this one and it’s just a ton of fun

Yessssss
You don't kill him, you *consume* him.
I can proudly say I was a single blade of grass in a lion king show
When 1:30 hits, I start shuddering from all the chills, remembering the scene in the movie when Simba runs through the Serengeti to get back home.
