- Wildwood Guitars is on the road! We flew out to gorgeous Corona, California to stop by the Fender Custom Shop, and were lucky enough to slip in undetected to catch a few good interviews with none other than the Fender Masterbuilders! In this video Greg Koch is joined by the up-and-coming apprentice to legendary pickup-winder Abigail Ybarra, Josefina Campos! In this video we talk to her about her time at Fender, the pickup winding process, and so much more -- check it out!

I like Rock N Roll too! And I like Josefina! I have her pickups in my strat and it’s an amazing sounding guitar!!! Thank You Josefina
Bless you fine ladies for gracing the world with TONE.
This is one of the reasons old strats have that magic. The attention to detail and dedication that went into EVERY pickup coming from the fender factory pre-CBS mass production
...assuming the wax bath is at ~125 C for PE wire coils to patch any insulation cracks around the edges. HF and poly insulation don't need that. The old polyester insulation could compress and stretch, though. New poly has aramid to retain shape. The main thing about the old Fender pickups was that the AV was weaker/softer so it wouldn't chip when cut. That's the only reason the earlier AV pole were beveled. The weaker/softer AV had less string pull and higher permeability & conductivity. Reduced string pull gives a more natural "warmer" note timber, and the other factors increase bass/reduce highs a bit. Not magic. Just science.
it had never occurred to me that Fender's best custom shop pickups could or would ever be made by a couple of fine ladies like this, who probably don't even play the guitar. They've honed their craft, truly an art form in itself, to such an extent, it's amazing.
Sweet and talented artisan 🤘🏻❤️
God bless her!
Great stuff!
As the true legend of the trio quietly works in the background! Barely got a mention!
Kingsley Saxon she’s retired now.....fender have a last run of hers under lock and key.
@@adamknipe216Yes I know. I have a telecaster with her PUs
Magical tone magnets
Where can I buy a set of these Josefina Campos handwound pickups
Eyes gonna steal those 2 bookend licks. No doubt the Kochsters artistic hands doing the deed.
Her and Abby are the real Fender soul...
I enjoyed this!
Good vid.
She is Ms. Josephine and make very special clear pickups .
Charming lady !!! I hope Fender has the decency to pay her well...
Im more than sure she's well taken care of by Fender.
Abby in the back ground the grand mother of pickups....
AY is right back there
cool ; )
You are a gentlemen ! Yeah , congrat for your magacine ;)
wasn't Abby retired?
2011 Abigail Ybarra retired... maybe they brought her in in a wheelchair r maybe this was filmed in 2009? "two years learning" Josie says...
Now when he hawks fishman he uses the same lines about how traditional pickup winding isnt consistent
Pay no attention to the legend behind the curtain...
I think she's retiring soon, which is why she's trained this other woman. But i thought they had some big celebration for Abby...hm, oh well.
Abigail Ybarra is the super old lady in the background.. Josie is her apprentice. I believe Abigail Ybarra retired in 2011 and Josie here says "learning 2 years" so it all doesn't make sense unless this was filmed in 2009. If so why was it released in 2013?
Let’s not forget that Jimi Hendrix used them pickups 👍🏻
That's Not Abby, its just a Full Scale Mock up of an original version. Its a reissue Abby!
lol because a lot of companies hire non US citizens to keep cost down they don't have to pay them as much or give them as much benefits then a US citizen, I'm not saying this woman here is not a citizen but you never know.
Many other companies do this and I know I have work in such places so why not a guitar company as well.
KING_GENO lol Mexican works harder than American just saying I know for a fact cause I work with them . American are sloppy and let thing slip away. unlike Mexican they pay attention to the detail
If she’s not a citizen and she wanted to be one, it could be the system where it makes it difficult and it should be easy. We easily became citizens without even making an effort back in the 1970s. Probably much more difficult now due to changes in laws.
lol she doesn't even know what she's doing
I think english isn't her preferred medium. Neither do I think she needs to explain the engineering theories behind the steps to "know what she's doing".
It's the scatter winding thats the secret behind the tone anyway. All other aspects are controllable and quantifiable.
What a weird comment. How successful is your life?
