  • The Miawpukek First Nation at Conne River, NL is an isolated reserve on the south coast of Newfoundland.
A successful Mi’kmaq community with zero unemployment and control over education.
It gained recognition as a band under the Indian Act in 1987. A sticking point in negotiations was the size of reserve lands.
Canada asked Conne River what its Mi’kmaq name for the reserve would be.
Chief Mi’sel Joe sought advice from an elder…
"Aosamiaji’j Miawpukek. I said ok, what does that mean? Well, he said, it’s too small. And he said, if you want to add emphasis, tell them it means too damn small. So that’s what I’ve been doing since that time.
Is that what it means? Absolutely, it means too small. And that’s on all of our official documents. And from that day forward we started saying, you already agreed that it’s too small."
