- Off the coast of Quebec, the island of Newfoundland is as isolated as it is icy. But its rich resources of fish attracted Europeans to settle there.
The Mi'kmaq community of Miawpukek was forced away from the coasts where it once resided, and suffered the oppression and erasure of its rites and language for centuries. Today, led by the Chief Misel Joe, the Mi'kmaq fights to preserve its identity.

I have a question and it is not meant to be insulting or demeaning in any way. I actually have been curious about the answer for years. It doesn't seem to me that the Northeast Algonquian tribes wear their own traditional garb all the time at the pow-wows. They wear the traditional dress of other tribes from further west. If I am wrong, please correct me. If I am correct, why is this done? Again, I really want to know the answer if someone pleases, this isn't an insult.
Kwe’ hello. Contact took place in 1497, that is how far we are removed from our traditional clothing, first treaty signed in 1725, then in 1749 the bounty on scalps to wipe us out was put out, then when that did not work Residentialschools opened in (1830) formally 1867- 1996 to assimilate us. Less then 10 yrs later came the Indian act of 1876 this prohibited us from gathering and practicing our culture tell 1951. Then came along the white paper of 1969 to try and gain authority over our territory the reason for that was ignoring that nation to nation agreements signed back in the 1725. That’s is 298 years of treaty denial. And 526 years of contact, where as the western cultures have only had contact since 1870 when Rupert opened up to the settlers. So there cultures were still fresh with culture identity so 153 yrs is only 2 people back. So we had to gather what we could of the old ways from the many other cultures that we historically traded with. Hope this kinda of brings a bit of information on why and how we adopted the fancy dance practices.
And western provinces learned from our treaties since we were the first to sign as sovereign nations and courts up hold those living documents.
My great…grandfather was Chief Henry. I take great pride to know that I carry some of his DNA.

That's because the Cajun accent comes from Acadian. "Cajun" means "Acadien" when spoken in the French accent. After the Great Deportation of Acadians by the English in 1755, many eventually made their way to Louisiana. The relation to the Mi'kmaq is that they were allies with and intermarried with the Acadians.
The Mi Kmaq carries holy sacred blood. Some feared them because of it and so they tried to annihilate them.

This place here called Newfoundland, is a special place that will belong to the people that made it what it is, the people that defeated it and hold dear to what it means to us and everyone one here, but don't ever get it in your migmaw head, that this most unique piece of rock belongs to a crowd that came from Nova Scotia and the Gaspe Bay.

Oh, I am so sick of the constant victimhood. All people fought for lands and natural resources. Why are whites held to a standard that none other are? BTW, I am descended from Daniel LeBlanc who was a Micmaq and there are those who say that this tribe was part Celtic.... hence Mic and Mac.

It's not that at all...here they are telling the history and today what took place would be considered illegal. These people were occupied and prevented from participating in the old economy and the new economy. When my mother was growing up, indigenous people weren't allowed to own businesses. They weren't even allowed off the reserve without a pass. Many of the common practices for the century after the creation of Canada would be considered crimes against humanity...and as they point out here had they been even given a say in how the environment was treated a lot of current issues would have never happened.
They didn't get the right to vote until 1963 and only got access to the courts decades after that...the Supreme Court upheld the treaties that we're made in the 1700s.
So it's not an attitude of victimhood....it's an expectation that all people are equal under the law. This is no different than what was done to the Palestinians and other indigenous people around the world. It's not about skin colour. It's the effects of settler colonialism which isn't successful without taking all of the rights of indigenous people away. The same was done to Ireland and Scotland.
