Hi, Some ridiculous conversations going on below. In those days yes they had reverb, very good reverb, rack units etc, it wasn't the semi-dark ages with loops of tape. In 1991 there were some awesome digital reverb and delay units, just not on PC. It wasn't computerised but you'd run it through effects loops. Real ones, not virtualised loops, that's where the term came from. Secondly, I'm pretty sure how this was recorded could be looked up once and for all if you REALLY cared. I'm more of a guitarist and remember reading about the mics/tents etc the guitarists they used to use, I'm guessing drums were also covered in similar magazines. Thirdly as to hearing james. Well you do. Maybe they recorded it live, not sure at all. Did they record live? Was it headphone/monitor leak. Or even channel leak. Pre digital recording you could sometimes get very low levels from one channel to the other, off the tape, depending on heads allignment. Remember: It was literally a stream of tape with some little metal cores hanging over it tightly spaced. If it was at a very low level and in sync, who cared.
Saw the track sheets in one of their documentaries. It was pretty clear they used a drum sample for the snare too. It also gets confusing when some account for what snare Lars used. Some say it was a Tama Bell brass, others say it was a Gretsch. This isolated recording shows it is pretty hybrid.
This is obviously the raw mix with strange choices just like the kick on the left and the snare on the right. But the performance is impressive anyway.
Is the reverb additional on is this the original drum track taken from the final master mix? I'm trying to A/B against the original and apart from the panned left kick/panned right snare I can't work out it.......

.....and yet for a piece of shit he's sooo much richer and more well known than you are :-D but here you are, still watching Metallica videos and acting like a baby calling their drummer shit....such a child :-D
First of all comparing Lars to drummers like Gene Hoglan, Richard Christy, Gar Samuelson and Nick Menza is probably the most unfair comparison ever made. Second of all Lars makes up for in creativity what he lacks in skill, Lara’s drumming isn’t always tight and perfect he’ll he can be down right fucking terrible live but if you here his drumming you instantly know two things; Thing 1, it’s a Metallica song and Thing 2, Lars is the drummer, he has a style so instantly recognisable that it’s unlike any other drummer. Lara’s style is simple yet effective and bears many small nuances that make it unique such as beginning fills half way through a bar, tracking the drums to the guitars instead of the bass, accenting riffs with the toms (see dyers eve, for whom the bell tolls, creeping Death etc), crashing on the second beat of a bar instead of the first, switching between half time and full time in the middle of a song (see wherever I may roam, seek and destroy, enter sandman), that kick pattern (also known as the Lars beat) and simplifying parts on slower songs to drive the song on in a more effective way (see every Metallica ballad ever), Lars’s style is simple but extremely effective and yet still manages to be unique on its own, Lars may not be the best drummer ever but he can drum the arses off of most people and that’s what makes him a good drummer. Second thing is that Napster was never about greed or money, of that was the case then why are Metallica songs available for free all over UA-cam and can be downloaded on music streaming services? Napster was never about the money it was because some cunt released an unfinished song, I completely agree that Metallica mishandled the situation but it was never about the money it was about who’s choice it is to release music and Napster never had the choice to release unfinished material. Third of all if Lars was such a cunt then why have fans that have met him in person say the complete opposite?
Well, when i listened to the studio version i took my metronome, and 123bpm was not a match at all. Then when i continued to try various tempos the only match was for me 127bpm.
You´ll never find the real BPM cause Metallica did not played in time ever, that´s why they sound so wild and human in their prime, now they do play in time and use metronomes, but not back in the time. BTW this was done by Metallica cause "fuck it, spend a million in roduction but BPM´s are for loosers lol" (OK Probably they never said it but that´s the feel and it works), but other bands have done the same, must notably Iron Maiden who did practice with metronomes but they turned them off for recording having a effect similar to that later achived to Metallica
Well "For whom the bell tolls" is recorded to a click track says Flemming Rasmussen in this article. www.blabbermouth.net/news/early-metallica-producer-flemming-rasmussen-talks-to-rockhall-com-about-ride-the-lightning-recording-process/ .....And the talk about programming tempos in "A year and a half" so they have been recording to a click track for some time. The it is often that the verse, chorus, bridge and so on have different bpm. Main riff can be like 124 the vers in 121 then chorus in 127 just to get the song pushing and pulling.
Thank you very much for this video, it's very usefull to me. Had you make this video for your own? It's great! If sometime I needed a drum track; Would you make me one for me? I'll be very pleased. Thank you again. Kisses from Argentina
This literally sounds like like Lars is punching my left ear and snapping out my right. I don’t think in the only one that’s noticed this. The stereo mix is very much throwing off my OCD especially Kick and Snare. They should be centered then everything else should be panned properly for a drum set.

I don't understand the criticism of this being easy meaning it's bad? Sure it's simple but at the end of the day you just play what sounds good right?! Idk
Yes! This is real panning. This whole recording is taken from actual studio session. You can even hear James vocals and sometimes Bass and Guitars in the background.
Angelo Morgan youtubedownloader.com/ It's a free download with no viruses. I've tried this program many times. You can even download the audio only as an mp3 file.
About the click...the did cut and paste and to do that without a click is almost impossible to to do nicly. The have recorded all the albums with click becouse the punch in/out drums a lot.
Yep. A click is used 90% of the time because recording standards have to be met so everything has to be perfect otherwise everything will sound fucked up on the album. The only time a click won't be used is if the song is going from slow to fast or vice versa, such as the mid section of At Dawn They Sleep by Slayer, or if the song is composed to have a free time section such as the ending to Sanitarium or the introduction to Hit the Lights. Then those sections will be recorded without a click but the rest of the song will be recorded with the click.
Hate? what a strong word..you can't be a Musician Who do you think arranges all the Met songs..? puts things in order to sound as amazing as they do The original riff is a quite different Lars idea to make it sound the way it does when Kirk first came up with it.. Lars puts things where they belong and sound as good as they do.. He is the composer..the BRAINS of the Band and so underrated on Drums!!!! giff steve
WHEN METALLICA SOLD out , One of the first things to SUCK was the drumming when a band goes J Pop and tries to become Nickelback ,.. as they concern about sounding "too technical" for their new audience of Aligator shirt wearing yuppies at their concerts, LOL
The worst tom sound on any Metallica album. Every one has a similar thud with very little difference in the drum note instead of the musical boom on the tom sound on Master of Puppets

This is mostly likely a guitar hero isolated track, so they probably touched it up for game, so I'm not quite sure

Thank you for your prompt answer. If I found another song, I'll keep this in my mind. Thank you again, and feel free for ask me whatever you want whenever you need.
Greetings.and my best wishes from Argentina :)
Hi. How many beats per minute on the metronome
maki rivera 123
I don't understand the criticism of this being easy meaning it's bad? Sure it's simple but at the end of the day you just play what sounds good right?! Idk
They didnt use any click, they recorded drums with live guitars and bass.
excelente video
i need a backing track for TooL's Lateralus, can you do that? :P
It's basically just Lars' version of AC/DC's TNT
Wow I can hear the stepped hi hat with the bass drum can't hear that on the full song.
I bet this drumming inspired cranberries to do similar style in dreams lol
gated snare. very popular in the 90s. 'every breathe you take' uses it too
is that the real panning?
Yes! This is real panning. This whole recording is taken from actual studio session.
You can even hear James vocals and sometimes Bass and Guitars in the background.
Kristjan Velleste No way is the final panning in the finished mix if you listen to it.
No, things haven't been panned like this since the 60s.
Fn sick
Hate on Lars all of you bedroom Neil Pearts. You'll never be in a band as successful as his! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
Bedroom Neil Pearts? Ha ha, love it :)
Successful isn't successfully good
Imagine worshipping a person this badly. Get some life perspective.
And ill never be more successful than Kurt cobain. Doesn't change the fact that the bedroom guitarists are infinitely better than him
@@4572dk technically guitar wise sure, but songwriting ability? No way near.
that is the mercyful fate medley drum track please
Can you put to Download?
Angelo Morgan youtubedownloader.com/
It's a free download with no viruses. I've tried this program many times.
You can even download the audio only as an mp3 file.
I can hear James in the background, lol 😊😅
About the click...the did cut and paste and to do that without a click is almost impossible to to do nicly. The have recorded all the albums with click becouse the punch in/out drums a lot.
Thanks Menn
You can very very faintly hear james
I add the bass on it (Rob's tone): ua-cam.com/video/0F8BX026RIE/v-deo.html
its 123 bpm :D
Thx
:D
Track panning is kinda weird
im wrong then !
The panning is 100% WRONG.
i thought this wasn't recorded to a click
@Eddie Venkman Amen
@Eddie Venkman lol that is just not true at all. Nowadays, sure, but since the 50s? Not even close
Denmark XD
Ta errado!!!!
Lars definitely used a click or metronome for this. His timing is terrible.
Duh? I think pretty much every drummer uses a metronome in the studio
@@kaiserwilhelmii1827 Lars does not
This is so easy, you can play with one hand.
Walamonga 1313 go ahead id like to see u do so
Kit Kat Kat Kake he probably could lol
So what? Does that make him a bad drummer?
@@gtbedyupeicefshf9887 Even Def leppard's drummer can (no offensive)
drown everything in reverb.
90 percent of it is real reverb
its protools, 90 percent of it loops and vst plugins.
no
thats what they did. not all of that is room verb. 90% of that is protools wave fx
Protools?! In 1991?! Are you mad? It was recorded on tape...
The recorded to a click
Yes it was
Lars is so mundane lol $350,000,000 in the bank but mundane lol
Oh ya thats why i hate lars ulrich
Hate? what a strong word..you can't be a Musician
Who do you think arranges all the Met songs..? puts things in order to sound as amazing as they do
The original riff is a quite different Lars idea to make it sound the way it does when Kirk first came up with it..
Lars puts things where they belong and sound as good as they do..
He is the composer..the BRAINS of the Band and so underrated on Drums!!!!
giff steve
that's why i love him
WHEN METALLICA SOLD out , One of the first things to SUCK was the drumming when a band goes J Pop and tries to become Nickelback ,.. as they concern about sounding "too technical" for their new audience of Aligator shirt wearing yuppies at their concerts, LOL
Lmao you just hatin
boring
The worst tom sound on any Metallica album. Every one has a similar thud with very little difference in the drum note instead of the musical boom on the tom sound on Master of Puppets

Say your prayers, little one
Don't forget, my son
To include everyone
Tuck you in, warm within
Keep you free from sin
'Til the sandman, he comes
Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight
Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
We're off to never-never land
Somethings wrong, shut the light
Heavy thoughts tonight
And they aren't of Snow White
Dreams of war, dreams of liars
Dreams of dragon's fire
And of things that will bite, yeah
Sleep with one eye open
Gripping your pillow tight
Exit light
Enter night
Take my hand
We're off to never-never land
Now I lay me down to sleep
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
If I die before I wake
If I die before I wake
I pray the Lord my soul to take
I pray the Lord my soul to take
Hush, little baby, don't say a word
And never mind that noise you heard
It's just the beasts under your bed
In your closet, in your head
Exit light
Enter night
