I learned this hot glue technique for making stencils a year ago. However, one day as I was working in my home studio on some elements with gold leaf, the leafing accidentally stuck to my hot glue stencil and stuck quite too well. Then I got the idea of using my glue gun to make elements and then gold leaf them. I was very impressed as doing this made some very beautiful and interesting organic shapes. I started using these to build elemental focal points in my mixed media work with matte medium and sealing them with varnish.

Thank you for watching. The glue gun is called a micro glue gun. I bought it at a craft store in the US. I don't know the brand but I will try a Google search.
Great for a bigger project that needs a repeating pattern. Especially a great grunge pattern that you envision. It would probably be easier to use if you apply it over a “frame”. You used a stencil which worked really well but even stiff cardboard might help anchor the glue and make it easier to move around.
So true. When I am filming I am conscious of the time and try to keep my meandering to a minimum. I love the idea of the frame, which worked with the circle opening.
@@SandraDuranWilson Doing live videos must be hard! So much information when you’ve been doing it so long but keeping it short so people engage and retain. You are a great teacher, easy to understand and you show us the steps and the results. Thank you.
There are so many possibilities it seems like some slip through the cracks. It is always fun to revisit some oldies. Have fun and let's see what you make.
What thickness should the paint be that is being used for the stenciling the paint have medium mixed in it or not, what type of paint should I use when stenciling and I have a smaller glue gun I have to keep pumping it is that normal
Yes you have to keep pumping the glue gun. I am using acrylic paint, no medium. The key is to use the cosmetic sponge and tap it first to really load the paint. Let me know how you do.
Great questions. If you are applying over a smooth surface you may use thin viscosity paint with a sponge. If you are applying over texture first apply a layer of gel gloss without paint and then apply a mixture of gel mixed with paint. The first layer of gloss gel will dry clear and your application will be crisp.

Hi Sandra, thabk you for sharing. Great video. I have a question: I don't have a glue gun so would this method work with UHU glue on parchment paper. Thank you.
Long term I don't think the glue will last well and this may just be an inexpensive short term technique. With that said, try storing them flat between parchment or freezer paper. This may prolong them somewhat.
That glue-gun thing looks like it would be fun to play with but does it produce noxious fumes, does it SMELL please? I'm rather sensitive to chemical & other stinks. Thank you.
Great ideas and tutorial, however I ruined my non stick craft mat doing this. The hot glue stuck to it, good and fast, and nothing I did, would take it off. Very disappointing.

When stenciling should the paint be mixed with a medium and how thick or thin or what should the consistency be of the paint?

I sometimes use an iron to flatten my glue gun stencils. As long as there's a sheet of baking/parchment paper on top.

Hi Sandra, thabk you for sharing. Great video. I have a question: I don't have a glue gun so would this method work with UHU glue on parchment paper. Thank you.
It might but the glue viscosity is different so you wouldn't get thin string like lines. Try it and see what happens.
Where do you get the black glue sticks ?
I got them at Michael's but it was pre-Covid.
@@SandraDuranWilsonexpected as much … easier to see … I like that ! Thx 🙏
I wonder if you could use silicon caulking. Hmmm.
I have used the silicone caulk. You can't get a fine line but it does work. It just takes time to dry. Great idea. Let's do some experiments.
@@SandraDuranWilson I think that will be fun!!!
I’ve used this method but they tend to be somewhat brittle Any suggestions?
Long term I don't think the glue will last well and this may just be an inexpensive short term technique. With that said, try storing them flat between parchment or freezer paper. This may prolong them somewhat.
Check that your glue sticks are new. I found old glue sticks that I had sitting around for a year or two were more brittle.
Good to know, thank you.
That glue-gun thing looks like it would be fun to play with but does it produce noxious fumes, does it SMELL please? I'm rather sensitive to chemical & other stinks. Thank you.
