  • Todd from Whole Latte Love shows you how to clean and calibrate the grinder in the Gaggia Brera Semi-automatic espresso machine. This procedure can solve a problem in which the grinder operates but no grounds are making it to the brew group so no coffee is brewed.

I've been using my Gaggia Brera about twice a day for the past year. Recently, i was getting error messages after the beans were ground and no coffee was coming out. I followed this easy video and turns out the shoot was blocked, other than that, it looked pretty good. Cleaned it out, reassembled and it works like a dream!
I appreciate Todd's lighthearted but thorough approach to the process. Very easy to follow! Give Todd a raise!
The video was also shot well so I could see everything perfectly. You guys did a great job. Thank you!

Great video. Solved my exact problem. I purchased a Gaggia Brera earlier this summer in August. Two weeks ago my wife switched to an oily bean. Within 2 weeks the grinder chute was clogged (didn't know until after watching this video) and the "No beans" light was on when the bean hopper was full. The pucks always came out mushy...if they came out at all. Many times they would just sit on top of the exit slide because they were too wet to get dumped into the puck discharge bin. So if those symptoms sound like your problem, this video is an easy fix. Also, another way to ensure it's a problem with your grinder is to brew a few cups of coffee using pre-ground setting. If those come out fine, it's a grinder issue. Thanks Whole Latte Love

For me, all other aspects of the machine worked perfectly, the hot water dispenser, steamer, pre-ground shot... But when I tried to pull a shot that needed grinding the 4 red blinking icons appeared on the top row. I thought the machine was totaled or something, it was a very intimidating icon sequence. But I took a breath and since all other aspects worked, I guessed the grinder was jammed since the red icons appeared immediately when trying to pull a shot.... and it was!! We only use Light Roast coffee too, so this was very surprising!! This video was very easy to follow along! Thank you!!

Hi Hammer, You are welcome. Congrats and thanks for your purchase! $7 for a triple shot latte? Yikes!!! Well, that's $trarbucks. With Orphea in the Brera a triple shot is about $0.42 then maybe a dime for the milk. You are going to save a fortune in the long run. Let us know what you think of the Orphea. IMO it's awesome in milk drinks, as straight espresso and I use for long coffee as well. For Espresso in the Brera set your grind to finest setting, strength to max and back off from there if needed. Also give it 4 or 5 brew cycles for the machine to adapt to your grind setting. First few espresso will likely be on the weak side.

We have a relatively newer model. When I vacuumed the bottom grinder as shown in the vid, I didn't think much of it because I have had many and have done it before. Almost by accident, I checked to see if the area around the hanging flap was clear. Instead, I found that it has almost got sucked backwards by the force of the suction. On my new machine the flap is made of extremely thin material.

Thanks, this is really helpful. I have two of these machines, one at home and one at my office. The office machine makes nice, dry pucks, whereas the home machine has made loose moist pucks since day one. The are both using the same grind setting and the same beans. I swapped the brew group but it made no difference. I will try a cleaning today and see if it has oily bean residue but ant other suggestions would be welcome. It's almost as though the home machine does not achieve the same fine grind.

Thank for the video. I've had my Brera since Feb and and didn't have any issues with the grinder since the initial one where I could not adjust the grinder. It was jammed with test coffee and disassembling it fixed that out of box issue. Now all this month the grinder alarm comes on and I've had to disassemble the grinder 6 times so far. The coffee is not at all dark or oily and one of my customers (I'm a roaster) uses the same blend with zero problems. I can't see any issues except every time the chute is full of coffee. It will grind good for 4-7 days and then jam up once again. I did submit a ticket today but I'm wondering if there are any other issue to look for. It worked perfectly for the first 7 months so something must be broken or not working. The chute door looks free as does the chute once it's cleaned. HELP!!

Thank you for this excellent instruction video.
But I still have a problem.
I have used the Gaggia Brera with much pleasure.
But last Friday 24 April it stopped brewing
I think it was the grinder who was blocked
So with the help of your instruction video I opened the machine and cleaned the grinder
The grinder is all clean and white again
I replaced everything (paid attention to the white dot on the top part of the grinder) and closed everything
    But still error messages
All 4 top lights keep flashing.
    And no grinder.
I have steam, not water, the dispenser is not blocked (there is water coming out while starting)
    What could this be?

Thanks for this video! I kept getting the light that the grinder was out of beans, even when the hopper was full, but I figured out that the opening from the grinder to the chute had some build up. Machine is working smoothly again. What beans do you recommend? I’ve found the least oily are Lavazza (my favourite is Gran Crema Espresso), but they’re just not that flavourful. I like Kicking Horse Cliff Hanger Espresso. They are a medium roast and not too oily, but they do get sticky even though they aren’t oily like Starbucks. Any suggestions of beans that are widely available?

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  6 років тому

Hi Nathalie, You are welcome. Thanks for the comment and question. If you like the Lavazza you might try Maromas Orphea. It's similar in some respects to Lavazza. Check out reviews from others here: www.wholelattelove.com/maromas-orphea-whole-bean-espresso
I also like Coffee Mio Ufficio: www.wholelattelove.com/coffee-mio-ufficio We have the Ufficio air shipped from the roaster in Australia. The roaster happens to be the distributor of Gaggia machines in Australia and fine tunes their Italian style bean blends to produce good results in super-automatic machines.

My brera is making weak coffee, and someone’s the grinds in the waste container are really wet and don’t hold together like they did when I first got it. Could that be caused by a malfunctioning grinder or would it be the brew group? I thought about replacing the brew group but worried about wasting money if that’s not the issue. Cheers!

Need help please! So, my Gaggia Brera would not get ready to brew a coffee anymore and I was able to troubleshoot the problem to be the system pump. Fortunately, after replacing the pump, the normal initiation routine of the coffee machine worked again as it is supposed to. Unfortunately, by replacing the pump I created another problem, the beans would not grind anymore. I hear the grinder spinning but at a much higher pitch noise, without any beans actually grinding. After seeing this video which is very helpful, I took a look at the grinding system. Long story short, there in the grinder I'm finding one of the screws that I lost during the replacement of the pump. I cleaned the grinder as shown in the video and all the parts look ok - nothing seems damaged or restricted. After putting everything back together, I was hopeful that I fixed all the problems, by the beans are still not being grinded. The same higher pitch noise can still be heard but there is no actual grinding sound. I can see the lower porcelain grinder turning, so the motor is not the issue. My only guess at this point is that for some reason the separation between the lower and upper porcelain grinder is too small for any beans to enter that gap and being grinded. What else could that screw that ended up in the grinder have screwed up (no pun intended). Any help is much appreciated.

Great video and a great product. One caution, however. When you take the plastic finger guard off make sure that don't lose the small brass bushing that fits inside the bottom of the plastic. I used a vacuum cleaner to clean out the remaining grounds and probably sucked it up. The finger guard won't work without it. I got a replacement and everything works fine but it was a minor hassle that I could have avoided.

Question about the grinder componentry. With the machine open, there is a place for a screw above the grind adjustment knob. (can see in images around 7:20-7:40) Is there an issue with placing a screw in this spot? Like your machine, mine does not have a screw in this location. It seems that it would stabilize the grinder housing and be a good thing. Is this something they used to use and realized it caused a problem?

I finally decided to set the calibration very coarse and had some good luck NOT getting many out of bean errors, maybe 1 out of 100 for about 300 shots. Then it started again. Took it all apart once again and a it was perfectly clean once again when I assembled it and immediately got 3 bean errors in a row. WTH! I could have sold a dozen of these machines for you but really can't recommend it for fear a friend will get one like me. It's now throwing errors at least 1 out of 3 times, non-oily coffee and coarse grind...so frustrating and will have to resort to external grinding once again. It just defied logic!!!

This chute empty message seems to be a common issue with the Brera grinder based on what I've read below. I don't think the fix of taking apart the grinder every 20-30 shots is very practical but that appears what I need to do! All the screw bosses are plastic and not brass inserts so after a half dozen disassembly and cleanings they tend to strip out even if lightly tightened. I'm so frustrated with my Brera at this point and I'm on my 2nd grinder assembly with the error coming up now 8 out of the past 64 shots and based on the last 40 of those the issue happens about 30% of the time. I had 24 good shots after cleaning but now it's happening a lot again. Time to take it apart once again? I am NOT using old or dark roasted coffee either. Maybe I'll just grind externally from now on because this is very crazy!!! Isn't there a solution to this? Gaggia is silent on this issue and I have written them twice now.

Ted, I did this but I cant get the top burr to turn. I did manage to get it off but the knob you push down to release the upper burr turned with it. Yours turns freely, mine is not. I cleaned both burrs and tried to put the upper burr back on. I cant get it to turn at all. I’m pushing down on the knob as hard as I can. It doesn’t go down far enough to clear the gears. Can you help me.

    • @Wholelattelovepage
      @Wholelattelovepage  3 роки тому +2

Hi Linda, The knob you push down, will turn when the upper burr is rotated in or out (just can't see it in the video). It is supposed to, it's a gear knob that helps turn the upper burr plate when adjusting the grind size with the knob in the bean hopper. As for the issue with the upper burr plate not turning. Make sure all 3 tabs on the upper burr plate are seated into the openings of the grinder, before trying to turn it. You may not have them seated all the way down, which will cause it to be blocked from turning into the grinder properly. Sometimes you may have to push down and turn on the upper burr plate, when seated in the grinder and pushing on the knob at the same time. This usually helps get it started. If you continue to have difficulty, let us know and we' ll do what we can to assist.
      Hope that helps!

Hi ZZ, Sent your question to our lead Gaggia Tech and here is his response:
4 flashing lights is basically like having an error code, just with no numbers. It's all in when then the flashing lights happen.Like if the machine is up and running without issue. And then a drink is selected, followed by immediate flashing lights and no grinder activation. Which usually means the grinder motor is dead for some reason. Motor went bad in most cases. Sometimes unplugged from board (very rare)
There are other times that the flashing lights can happen and that would determine were the issue is with the machine

I thought that I would let you know about an intricate piece of this grinder and a correction. The item that you called a finger guard is not only a finger guard but regulates the amount of beans that is ground during the grind cycle. If you tried to use it without that piece then it would bogg down the water pressure system and you would notice a considerable lower tone; slower brew time; and less water dispensed. Even at mid grind and 2 bean setting you will get the same. So unless you adjust the grind time, then your Finger Guard isn't required.
