This video really demonstrated the best means to get at a tricky tensioner. Most recommend removing the engine mounts etc.. very unnecessary. I have to say thank you for guiding me through a repair that I was dreading. It wasn't fun, but the method and steps presented were absolutely spot on. Top notch presentation.
Excellent, EXCELLENT vid!
I'm a weekend mechanic with over 50 years of experience and I really appreciate your no-BS videos.
Your trick of putting the belt on from the bottom instead of the top by the tensioner is GENIUS! I struggled with the top method for hours - just could not get it. Whata poor design! NO room to work in there! I got the belt on in 5 minutes with your bottom method.
THANK YOU!
Your video and a few basic tools I've been buying on Craigslist this year helped me save a few hundred bucks doing this job myself I less than an hour. These instructions were exactly what I followed for a 2008 CRV. It works perfectly. THANK YOU!

I’ve been two days struggling to,replace an alternator on a CRV. I’m convinced these vehicles are Japan’s revenge on America for Hiroshima and Nagasaki!
I really enjoy your videos. You are an excellent teacher. Your voice is easy to hear and understand. Your instructions are specific and rationale is given. Your tips make sense and I definitely hope that everyone appreciates your talent. Keep up the great work. Kudos also to the camera person for keeping the viewing angles perfect and in focus!
+Eric Shaw Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
Every vid I've seen by these ppl has been spot on and very informative, great channel
Wow Sue, I never realized that the serpentine belt removal tool goes in from the bottom of the car. I was having a hard time figuring that out when I had to replace my alternator this past week. I ended up getting a 14mm offset box wrench in combination with a wrench extender and that did the trick.
I'll never again complain about the space I have on my 2.4 07 Accord in that location. Just did the belt and tensioner yesterday. Its like a concert hall in terms of space compared to this. WOW crv!
EXACTLY
Worst car I've ever worked on.
Excellent video. Truly the best I've watched on a repair. Great audio and visual. She takes her time and shows us everything to know. I feel like I can confidently do this repair myself on my CR-V! Thanks!
My CRV is at 182,000 miles. And I know the belt needs to be replaced. But based on the sound coming from the tensioner I'm sure its ready as well. This was an excellent video. Very clear and informative.

This gal is swell. She has the touch. I ever watched five times, today I took mine apart. It went well, But there is a hitch. I'm still stupid about pulleys. Help ,,,!!!
Too tall Timm
@@1AAuto tiny URL link is broken so link goes nowhere
Great video and very descriptive. My one complaint is that you don’t mention that when removing the pulley there is a non-captivated nut that is guaranteed to fall out and get lost somewhere. Those sorts of details are very useful to novices.
Overall this was a good video. On my 2006 CRV, I had a serp tension assemble replaced 30k miles ago and the pulley bearing started screaming. So, I replaced pulley only. Gates makes one. A couple of things, on my 2006 made in UK, the tensioner pulley was a 15mm not a 14mm as in this video. In final, I could not get my finger behind the pulley and motor to keep the back nut from falling out so I slide a 3" putty knife behind and between until the bolt ran into the nut.
Thanks!
One of the best mechanics online period. Question: Why not replace belt? Why not replace spool valve gasket leaking oil? Why not replace PCV valve while in there? ❤
Why replace the whole assembly when they sell just the pulley ? Seems like you could put the replacement pulley on at 6:25 in the vid , then reassemble. I'm no mechanic , so I need advice. Thanks.
EXCELLENT quality and presentation and all from one very talented female who would put other mechanics to shame, keep up the good work, very well done!
I thought the tension pulley was bad on my CRv so I took it off to check the bearing. It turns out the alternator is making noise even though it is functioning ok. So I put in a new alternator. Not too difficult.
But now I have to remove the power steering pump to reach the nut to reinstall the pulley. I'm surprised by the loose nut in the back rather than a threaded mounting bracket. I didn't know.. and spent a lot of time trying to start the bolt into an empty hole. AND very tight working space. ohhhhhh my aching back !
I’ve had UA-cam since I was 15 and this is my first comment ever, all I seen was the motor mount way and was kinda nervous to do all that this is definitely the way super easy and simple with minimal tools just need patience and follow step by step
Did it just like this on a 2008 crv, took me 1.5 hrs with a helper. Getting the belt back on is the roughest part.
Appreciate the video, but you should include WHY you need to change the tensioner
Nice tip on putting back the serpentine belt: Losen the tensioner pulley from the bottom and then slip the serpentine belt on to the crankshaft pulley.
I would have to try this way when it's time for me to replace the belt, and its tensioner. You are going to take the side cover off anyways. Thx
I dont know what year is this car, but you have more room than my 05 CRV. The motor mount is my way for the tensioner pulley, in this one you have more room there
Love the videos 1AAuto post it makes it easier to do it yourself. Would love to see one on water pump replacement on this same vehicle.
I love the way your speak and explain! Your method is also the most brilliant of them all. Thanks
I have a 2005 CRV and to remove the tensioner I had no choice that to remove the motor mount that is just in front of it. I had no room to put any ratchet so the job took longer and get a long socket to remove bolts on the motor mount. This vehicle is a little different that my 2005
this video was very helpful in replacing the power steering pump.
thanks for the video.
Another alternative to get a new belt on smoothly: 1. use a strong string to pull the handle of the ratchet to hold the tensioner off. 2. get the pulley of the power steering off(but keep the mount get on well). 3. get the belt on the pulley well. 4. snug the central bolt for the pulley. 5. use ratchet to tight it. 6. all is done.
the reason is that the new belt is very tight and very hard to try to pull on the pulley even you make the tensioner completely off. hope it helpful for you.
The design guy of the CrV must be one hell of an angry person.
wonderful vid... tells everything you need to know... My god, it would easier crawling in thru the tail pipe! Idlers are maintenance items. The engineers should have thought about that during design.. Anyway, I now know what I need to in order to get the job done THANKS
I love this channel. I have one question, I saw on final step tensioner head pulled clockwise to set the belt on it place, and it seem fast and easy, so why she didn't do same way when she removeed the belt?
Great video! But I didn't take out the pulley to get to that one back bolt. I just took off the engine mount, jack the engine up a little and I got enough space to put a socket and a ratchet
if you take the plastic flap out of the wheel well you can easily access the lower pulleys to thread the belt.
Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you ! I would have never found the stupid center bolt on the tensioner ! Best instructions! A++++++++++++++++++++
This method is by far the easiest. Why do all the other install videos require removal of motor mount to access tensioner bolts. Is that for a different model maybe?

This Guy explains everything really well and his voice is very calming . Nice job dude, I bought my parts from you too.
You mean this Chick sounds really well, HER voice is very calming, lol.
I was able to get the belt back on by using a ratchet strap connecting the tow hook underneath on the wrench pulling back the tensioner to keep it pulled back. With the belt on everything except the crank pulley underneath. I couldn't quite stretch the belt over the crank pulley so I used a socket wrench to turn the crank pulley clockwise by hand and it was able to easily walk the belt on the rest of the way 👍 she purrs like a kitten now no more squeeling and tapping noises
Note that if you're just replacing the idler pulley, there is no need to remove the power steering pump though it does help to remove the power steering fluid bracket (another two 10mm bolts).
tensioner itself is designed to wear out (150KMi)... so replacing the pulley alone is a waste of time
thank you the last video I watched suggested taking out the engine mount. I didn't have a floor jack, again thank you.
I learned a trick to hold that nut in back either put super glue or piece of paper so the in back of the pulley will stay while installing the bolt and the pulley
I did mine today without taking off the power steering pump. I just remove the reservoir only, and use 14 mm close wrench on the bolt and the open end connect to 1/2 in torch wrench with 2 ft handle.
Another amazing job !! Thank you
Great video. So a 1/4" ratchet fits on the tensioner pulley! Did not know that. I know a 3/8" won't fit. Good info on not losing that tensioner pulley mounting nut. ALSO: "Once tensioner bottoms out, another 1/4" nudge with the wrench" Sounds good to me for 41 ft/lbs. I guess a 4th gen 2012-16 CRV is the same except you remove the idler instead of steering pump.. Good stuff! Thanks!
That looks like a custom tool for the tensioner. Took me all day to figure it out and with help
I always trust a video more when I see a snap on socket on their ratchet. Us in the rust belt know the value of time not dealing with rounding fasteners off 👍 watched for the torque spec, so thank you for providing it
+Gunner Schenck Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks. I am debating to whether remove the passenger side motor mount for better access as my tool selection is somewhat limited.
Спасибо вам за это видео Очень мало видео по ремонту хонды . А по замене натяжителя только у вас . Подписался на ваш канал
Thank you for posting this - many thanks.
How is the tensioner tool attached to the ratchet?
I did it on a 09 honda crv and i removed the motor mount to save my knuckles and prevent me from cussing a storm and making tools take flight into the bushes
Edit.. i failed to mention that i replaced the water pump and belt tensioner pulley
Is it possible to just replace the idler pulley and not the whole apparatus?
great video with good instruction, saved me a lot of job
Another great tutorial video Sue. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for the excellent video, nice job!
It’s easier if you take the engine mount off and Jack up the engine a bit so you don’t take off the pulley and u have way more room to get in there
sounds good, Where would you place the jack so you dont do damage to the engine?
@@whiskkers9291 you don't want to Jack from the oil pan, because if something goes wrong you mess up the oil pickup and that can render the engine destroyed
Well. There's no reason to take the whole assembly when u can just replace the pulley itself. 🙄
@@checkforfleas9452 the arm has spring on a shaft when shaft wears enough it sends belt into engine and shreds belt do as a whole and oem only 12 yrs on my oem get another 12 yrs China 3months
THE BEST TOOL FOR THIS JOB IS THE HON1419 SERPENTINE BELT REMOVAL TOOL USED IN DEALERSHIPS. $35 BEST WRENCH EVER
Love the video, you go step by step on how to. Thank you
love 1a auto videos but when you bent that line yike s!!!
If the tensioner is weak will that let the belt slip when driving through puddles in the rain?
Where can we find this mechanic/technician?! If only the dealer techs would take this much care and time to do repairs the right way. So tired of incorrect repairs, mistakes, loose bolts, etc. after dealer service.

So if you take the bearing pulley part why remove the while thing? Honest question
Great explanation for belts tensioner replacement
+Abdul Rashid Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Thanks the info i i needed easy to follow!
How did you know if the tensioner needs to be replace?
I like how you snuck the belt arond the crank pulley
Way easier than from the top!
Thank you, great video !
This is brilliant, thanks. Looks identical to my 2008 Accord (Euro) 2.2 turbo diesel. Any idea if that's the case? This video will help for sure anyway 👍 hello from Scotland
+Chris Mac We don't have a how-to video for your vehicle right now, but the basic steps in this video should be enough to do this task. Buy this part for your vehicle on 1AAuto.com: 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I just done Alt replace on my 3rd Gen CR-V, hard time with Tensioner, I should seen this video before, way easier from Bottom! 😮
Anyone know why im constantly leaking power steering fluid on my belt and everything else on that side? I replaced both hoses on the reservoir and the high pressure hose that goes to the top of the power steering pump over the engine to the back. Maybe the part where the reservoir hose and return hose connect? Its in such a tight area and bolted to the frame its almost impossible to check.
The link in the description for the 14mm long box wrench to remove the belt is not what she used in the video. The link is for a standard length wrench. She used a long wrench. The job can not be done with a standard length wrench alone. Please include the correct link to purchase the long wrench. Otherwise, great video.
Awesome tutorial And removed all the guesswork. I also understand why you're a woman doing it... unfortunately my hands can't easily get to the spots you got. Very very tight squeeze for me.
I have a 2011 Honda CRV. About 90% of the time on my first start of the day I get a grirrr sound that lasts about a second or two. If the engine is warm it wont happen . Is this my Tensioner ? I took it to a Honda dealership and left it over night and wouldn't you know it, it didn't happen there. They told me it may be the timing chain may have stretched and to keep the oil full. The oil is full and it still happens. It seems to be worse (sound lasts longer and louder) the longer the car sits. I asked if this sound could damage the engine and they said no. I use this car for work, so can't afford to have the engine blow. Any help would be grateful. Thanks.
I’m having the same issue with mine, any chance you solved it?
Vtc issue check you tube for videos
Great job and video thank you for sharing!!!😊
Thnx, I was stock , I didn't know, or looked like l had to removed the center bolt. Thanks
Honda didn't give you much room on the CR-V; the Accord is much easier -
Two questions, can I use thread locker on the mounting bolts? And do I need the belt tool to complete this job?
I noticed nobody ever mentions what year their CRV is. This doesn’t always work for every CRV model. Some power steering pumps are actually attached to the tensioner… Case in point...2003 models
+Steven M. Hollis Thanks for the feedback! This is for the 2002-2014 model years.

Exactly, mine is a 2003 and it’s a PITA
Never showed getting that 14mm xl wrench off the tensioner bolt 😂😂 I heard that sigh tho😂 show the struggle so one of these newbies don't get in over their head
Great video!
You website to the parts you sell aren’t the one in this video for the 08 accord different
Hi ! What is the size of the belt to take 1732 or 1750 mm?
What size is the socket that goes to the 12mm bolt? I lost mine.
The 14mm bolt in my tensioner isn’t budging.
Any tips?
Can a weak tensioner cause a battery to not fully charge
I have a 2013, this video DOES NOT represent a 2013 model, does not have a power stereering pump...
Nice job, thanks for the video. Please don't use a torque wrench to break bolts loose.
+jim31886 Thanks for the feedback!
Looked like flex head ratchet to me
Nice job - Thank you
Man I’m glad I don’t live in the rust belt!
At 1:45. Is that 14 mm wrench a 15 degree offset?
Should have just taken off the the tensioner pulley off and replaced the bearing, there was nothing wrong with the tensioner. €10 fix
Buy oem Honda , China won’t lasts but 3 months that’s why they are 40$ oem Honda 121$ lasts 12 yrs JT
Why dont you use a racheting wrench?
They wanted to charge us $1100 for this. Did it in a couple hours on my own. insane out there
Thanks but I need a video for a Honda 3.5 .
I think that no one has a good video of changing that one.
Is that the one where you have to remove the water pump pulley? Have fun with that one.
what is the part the tensioner is mounted to called
One of the most pain in the a** belt and tensioner ive ever done. Close second is the Honda Fit
And i have the 2012 model with electric PS
How much does job like that cost from a local mechanic?
Do you have to remove the pump? Of get away with putting a new belt on with out the removal of the pump?
It's easy to put on without removing anything. Just move the power steering pump out of the way like she did first, then use tie the new belt to the old one and use it to snake it down to the bottom. You can then thread the new belt.
Okay nice video, perfet, exelent...
