    Wondering which tools I prefer and which ones I used to make this shadow box? Although you can get by without all of them, here are my favorites.
    NEEDED for this project:
    Skil 3/8 Roundover Bit 91002 amzn.to/2vXwZ1q
    DeWalt Cordless Drill DCD771C2 20v amzn.to/2xgCmK7
    DeWalt Table Saw DW745 amzn.to/2BQnXRr
    DeWalt Miter Saw amzn.to/2EBBak6
    DeWalt Plunge Router DWP611PK amzn.to/32tCksd
    DeWalt Orbital Sander 20v amzn.to/3kbDepo
    OPTIONAL but you can do without.
    Dremel kit amzn.to/2DSYY1t
    Irwin Trigger Clamps amzn.to/2DWxd89
    DeWalt 18 Gauge Cordless Brad nailer DCN680D1 20v amzn.to/3Cct3qw
    DeWalt Jig Saw 20v amzn.to/2X1WvRb
    DeWalt Circular Saw Tool Only amzn.to/3mFqK9v
    In this video I will create two standard shadow boxes. One will be made of Oak and the other of Mahogany. I will be placing a cutlass through the Mahogany box so the size will differ just a bit. (21x21x3.5) These are easy to make and are a fraction of the cost if you buy one from the store. I will only show the making of the Oak box unless there is a difference in the process. Thanks for watching.

    Wow I like this box too, I commented on your other shadow box. I would love one like this but more of a rectangle with the flag left corner with that measurement being the height of the box and the length being long. Hi Jon, I am actually working on the shadow boxes today. I cut the plexiglass wrong so I am in Menards getting some now. By the way what thickness do you normally use? Is it .080 or .100? And regarding color of felt for scouts. I will be using a Navy blue for my son's Cub Scout years and a off green (not sure exactly the name of it right now) for his Boy Scout years. You may want to Google Boy Scout colors. John

    • @JONSDIY
      @JONSDIY  7 років тому +1

      If the Medals are mounted like they would be for pinning to your chest (push bar) and you use the foam board you will see once you put them in that they don't come out to easy. A few times I didn't push them in perfectly even and when pulling them out to correct, I almost broke the rack. That's how good they hold. You can always put a bead of Elmer's glue behind the rack for extra support. But trust me, once pressed in, they don't come out. As they are hanging freely, I always tell the owners to never lay the box on its face. Not in fear of them coming out but the fear of the medals scratching the inside of the plexiglass or glass.

    • @j77scout
      @j77scout 7 років тому

      Thanks. But it doesn't make my concern go away. Would you consider bending the prongs downward to help?

    • @JONSDIY
      @JONSDIY  7 років тому +1

      No, but for the officer emblems which are just large screw on the back. I push slighly on the foam board to make a mark. Then take a small phillips screw driver and make a more defined hole. then fill it with Elmers glue and place the emblem back in the holes. This could be done for the medals as well. But I recommend you run a test to ease your mind. Grab a small piece of your foam board and stick a medal rack on it. You can use the one that you will use for the box, (before you place the felt on) then shake it and you will see what I mean. I have never had anyone tell me that any pieces in there shadow box have come loose. But I do worry about the large black plaques. They come to me complete with double sided tape. I often wonder if someday it will dry out and the plaques would come loose. Hope these tests will ease your concern. Thanks for your comments. Jon

    • @JONSDIY

    • @JONSDIY
      @JONSDIY  3 роки тому +1

      Since I use half inch foamboard this allows me to place small brads (x4) around the coin. The heads of the brads hold the coin in position. Along with the brads a bit of wood glue on the spot for the coin to stick to or 2 sided tape can give you added support. But the brads alone have never failed me.

      Not at all. I usually use glass when the box is square and plexiglass when the box has an unusual shape. But this is a DIY and glass is difficult for someone that does not cut it all the time. Mistakes with glass get costly. So for a DIY Plexiglass is hard to screw up. But take a look at many of my other videos and I use glass. But just my 2 cents..... plexiglass is supper easy and gives great results for the armature DIYer.

      +Andy , 30x30!! that's huge, what do you intend to put in the case? I thought these 2 I made were big and the mahogany box was only 21x21. Is this going on a wall?

    Hello did you use a dado blade on your dewalt table saw? If so do you have a link to that?

      @JONSDIY  4 роки тому

      Wojo, yes I did. Are you looking for a link to the dado set? Because I purchased it at sears and they no longer sell it. But there are others just as good made by Craftsman.

      Ok thank you. I was told a dado blade could not be used on the dewalt saw but I never researched it. I will
      Look into it thank you.

      @@wojo1034 the older models do not. but the new ones do like the DWE7490 and DWE7491 amzn.to/2O2kIPu
      I think you have to buy the dado throat plate separate but don't quote me on that. Also the next time I go to buy dados I will get the DeWalt set unless I can find a good Diablo set. amzn.to/2S0Vxyi

    I used a 3/8 round over and my edges look nothing like yours. Did you use a Roman ogee?

      Stephen. No just a roundover. The one pictured in the middle.

      This is the exact bit I am using. (Skil 3/8 Roundover)

    Judging by how many navy things you have made, and I have heard you mention being in the military, im gonna take a guess and say you were either a sailor or marine. Were you one of those?

    Great box! But man, it is NEVER a good idea to wear gloves while using a table saw and so many times your fingers came near that blade! I get this was 6 years ago. I hope all your digits are still attached. Phew.

      Think you have issues with your sound. There is nothing wrong with the sound on this video.
