  • This is a clip from the bridge of the USS Kitty Hawk (CV-63) aircraft carrier on its way home to Yokosuka Naval Base Japan during a typhoon. My dad was on board this ship as they passed through the storm (that's how I got this footage but it was not shot by him). As they left the storm the damage to the ship was hard to miss. The starboard side cat walk on the bow was heavily damaged and the safety netting ripped clear off. I do not own this film, it was shot in 2008 ish and i received this film from my Dad shortly after his return home. ( the USS Kitty Hawk is now retired from active service)

To answer the most common question asked here, the helicopter was left on the bow because it landed and crews had to tie it down and get their butts off the deck as they entered the storm.

Thanks for that, mind you after all that salt water had been through it they may as well have just kicked it over the side - salt water just loves aluminium and electrics - corrosion or what!

@Mike Walrus, aluminum is actually one of the most resistant metals to salt water. I work with subsea robotics, and our subs are made of aluminum. Yes, we wash them off when bringing them to deck, but there are times we go weeks to months in the water, with no issues.

My dad was the shop foreman and the lead engineer on Kitty Hawk when she entered Hunters Point shipyard in San Franciso for some repairs in November of 1961. Because of his position at "the yard" he was able to take me on a tour of Kitty Hawk, from sitting in the Captain's chair up in the Island, all the way down to the engine room. What an experience for a young boy.

I was on the USS Hepburn (FF-1055) way back in the day and the guys on the carriers used to tell us how much they would laugh at us because we disappeared in storms like that. Never once though did I get seasick which is something most of my shipmates couldn't say. Ah, the good old days headed to Subic Bay.

Hard to imagine how big that wave was. In fact, it's so hard to tell how big it is because the ship itself is massive and those waves made it rock like a tinny in a bay shore break

I served aboard the Hawk from 92-96. This occurred on my first voyage with her, on our way to Japan, riding at the head of the typhoon. The waves were buckling the steel plates of the bulkheads in the forward compartments and our DC team had to shore it up to keep it from caving completely. Someone took a picture...looked like a spiderweb of 6x6s in that compartment. It was truly awesome. The waves pushed water up into the air intakes, just under the flight deck and it poured into many of the compartments. Still, glad I was on the carrier and not one of the small boys in our battle group. Those poor folks really took a beating.

I served on the USS George Washington (CVN 73) and worked on the flight deck (catapults) from 1998-2003. On our 2002 deployment, we went through a really crazy storm. I woke at 2AM to one big damn wave crashing over the fight deck that knocked the slot seal out of the starboard side catapult. It flooded the space below the flight deck on the 03 level. I woke up my Chief and helped the Damage Controlmen (ship’s fire fighters) empty the water out of that space with buckets! It was scary but then exhilarating to be a part of a team like that. :) It’s one memory out of many on that boat that I’ll never forget!

I was on the Kitty Hawk for a few days when I was in the Marines, for a joint exercise in which we launched helo infantry off the ship. I made friends with some sailors in ordnance (red shirts) and they brought me up to watch the F-14s take off at night. An awesome sight I'll never forget - 20 foot cones of fire coming out of the engines, incredible heat, and awesome sound. They gave some of us berthing in the ship, but we were berthed with some guys who had day shifts. So all night they were slamming their beds down (they stored their stuff under theese litte mattresses) and shouting. That sucked so we used sleeping rolls and camped in the forcastle, right under the flight deck, with the anchor chains. This was in 1995. They also showed me some of the planes in the hangar, and honestly I was surprised at how dirty and banged up these things were. Instead of nice smooth fuselage, lots of dings and dents, and grimy. It certainly wasn't 'Top Gun.' But, carrier life is hard on equipment. One F-14 they called 'Christine' because it had sucked two different guys into the engine on two different occasions.

Did my first deployment on the Kitty. Took it to Japan, 1997 I think, can’t remember a damn thing anymore. All the deployments blend together. Out of all the carriers I deployed on it was my favorite, crew had to have their shit in one sock, many fires and under way replenishment had to happen every 4-7 days, depending on fuel consumption. That team was dialed in. Still remember walking the P-ways with the smell of hot wires. Kitty road pretty well, can’t remember if it was the Carl Vinson or the John C Stennis that was horrible in even moderate sea state. I was a flight deck Coordinator toward the end of my carrier, we where off the coast of Korea and trying to outrun a storm in middle of winter, I remember being all the forward on the flight deck verifying heavy weather tie downs on aircraft and being completely drenched by a wave of freezing water. Let’s you know how small you are. A lot of salty dogs in the comments, thank you for your service. -PRC Retired.

I served on an Aircraftcarrier in 1966. We were on our way home from Vietnam. Between Japan and Midway Island ran into a typhoon with 150 MPH winds and 80 ft seas. It was 90 foot from the flight deck to the Ocean. Waves where coming over the flight deck. Some waves went as high as the bridge on the 011 deck. Our screws were coming out of the water. We could only do five knots to steer the ship. Destroyers that were with us looked like submarines when they were hit by large waves.

I was aboard Queen Mary 2 when she encountered a strong storm and very heavy seas during a westbound transatlantic in 2017. Wave heights were 40-50’ so the ship was constantly pitching and rolling. Every few minutes it felt like her bow struck a particularly large wave, and this went on for some hours. A crew member said it was the strongest storm QM2 went through in ten years. It was all quite impressive!

Nice to see the Kitty Hawk again. I was on her sister the Connie from 84-87. We went through a North Pacific Typhoon in 86 with conditions just like this but at night. 75ft waves breaking over the bow, winds way over 100mph. Because we were in bingo ops we cleared the deck completely. The basement was filled and zipped up tight and the rest flew to bingo fields. I snuck onto the flight deck catwalk without getting seen by the air boss (woulda been my ass had I been caught and if I got blown overboard that woulda been it, game over). Connie had some similar hull plating damage but our escorts, particularly the DDG's got trashed. One lost most of a mast. The storm was severe enough to rearrange the the sandbars in the Cook Inlet to Anchorage, Alaska. We had to wait a couple days to chart a new course to get Connies draft safety through. I'm not quite sure why the Hawk didn't spot that helo closer to amidships near the island. Seems to me that would be closer to CG and safer for the crew to shut down and go below. I was V-2 Division, Waist Catapults.

If you have to be out at sea in a typhoon, this is the ship you want to be on. I was stationed on USS Enterprise in 1978 and had to leave Subic Bay early on account of a typhoon; BG decided to head for Hawaii instead of coming back to port, so we rode straight through the typhoon and out the other side. The ride was pretty much just like in this video. Stood in the hangar deck with the elevator doors open and watching the crest of waves going up above us almost to the 0-3 level. Water never entered the hangar bay, oddly enough. Strange phenomenon but awesome to witness just the same.

That SH-60 belongs to HSL-51 & their Det MO almost had a stroke when he saw what happened. His guys had to do an Emergency Reclamation after the storm due to the saltwater's corrosive properties. Abt. that wave, most people would think it's only water; well, all that water in two great waves weighed in tons. The impact was so great that the fwd stbd catwalks were crushed & twisted. Some sections were even ripped off the ship & fell into the sea. If that helo wasn't chained onto the padeyes of the flight deck, HSL-51 would be going back to NAF Atsugi one helo less.

This was during carrier qualifications in 2008 during March to the beginning of April. As much as I remember from the weather report, it was a tropical low off the coast. Typhoons don't form in that time of the year due to the water being too cold. Also the Admiral's ladder in the aft was destroyed and removed by the waves, and in the forecastle, a lot of shoring destroyed lights and bent some parts of the ceiling and the immense pressure from the waves dented in the bow on the starboard side. If you go to Bremerton, you can see the dent. Many things were damaged by the storm. This is common for ships whether they are large or not; they always get damaged. Mother Nature is more powerful.

Whether it was on the deck edge elevator in high swells or blue water coming over the bow like we see here, as soon as safely possible they would call away the splash team for whichever squadrons plane had been splashed, and we all grabbed water paks (big bladder filled with fresh water with nozzle that you pumped, looked kinda like a flame thrower) and washed the aircraft down to minimize corrosion. Aircraft are expensive, but they have lots 18 and 20 year olds to wash them!

I rode through a severe storm with Kitty Hawk aboard USS O'Brien DD-725. The storm tore some life rafts loose from the Kitty Hawk. It also bent one of our 5-inch gun mounts out of alignment on its base, so that the guns could not be correctly aimed. We had to go to Subic Bay PI for repairs. Ah, the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club.

      @jerlan23 7 років тому +5

It was almost 50 yrs. ago, 67 or 68, when I rode through that storm. It seems to me that our damaged mount was 52, but mount 51 would seem more logical, due to its location nearer the waterline and farther forward. The life rafts torn loose from Kitty Hawk were mounted about 50 feet (5 stories) above the waterline. In another story, when we were taken under fire by North Vietnamese shore batteries near Dong Hoi, 23 Dec. 66, planes from Kitty Hawk and Enterprise came to assist. Our counter-battery fire had destroyed the gun emplacements, and the fighter planes destroyed the rubble.

Kitty Hawk CV-63, in late February of 1983, when the Kitty Hawk left the Naval dry dock in Bremerton, WA, and hit a winter typhoon off the northwest coast of Washington, as Kitty Hawk was heading back to San Diego. 50 ft. and bigger waves were breaking upon the Admiral's bridge. In early October of 1982, HS-2 was aboard the U.S.S. Ranger CV-61, heading back to San Diego. The Ranger was 2 days east of Guam, when a typhoon caught up with the Ranger and a sneaker 100 footer hit the starboard side, that nearly capsized the Ranger and it came with-in 3 degrees from doing it. The Captain and a Chaplin got on the 1-MC and told the whole crew of 5,340 to start praying. The next morning, the Ranger was in the eye of the typhoon and swing north towards Japan.

I was on the Indy and went through a storm like this. Buckled our bow plates, 3 communication antenna, 30 ft of cat walk on one side, 40 ft on the other side and about a foot and a half of water in the hanger bay. Oh yea, flooded out the chain locker.

I was onboard that day. I remember that helo that was left chained down on the bow took some expensive hits. And when we pulled into port, the bow of the ship looked like a train smashed into it and full speed.

I was on the USS Independence (CV-62) in Japan. I remember when the Kitty Hawk relieved us and took over the homeport in the late '90s.
