In this video I’m going to give you my top picks for 27 inch bicycle tires.
Now you might wonder why would that be such a big deal. Well it isn’t really, unless you’re trying to find 27 inch bicycle tires, because there are not that many.
I found that out the hard way because the pair of Continental Gator Skin tires I had laying around ready to go onto the rims of my Bridgestone Submariner, they didn’t fit.
As it turned out 27 inch wheels were quite common back in the day, but not so much anymore. And considering the fact that the Submariner is from 1978 you understand why it had a more exotic sized wheelset.
So I did some research into the big brand names of the tire industry and came up with these options for 27 inch bicycle tires.

Pasela is the best for sure, superb grip and high Japanese quality, line up the logo with the valve stem for extra style points!

keep in mind the logo is usually at the heaviest part of the rim. usually that coincides with the location of the rim seam. best thing to do is achieve balance before the tire is installed and check balance after the tire is mounted. 'style points' won't ensure proper wear of the wheel assembly. since the stem is usually at the lightest part of the assembled wheel- you can fine-balance the assembly by fitting washers around the stem and stabilizing them with a dab of rtv silicone. 'style points' do nothing to ensure a properly balanced assembly and in the majority of cases lining up the logo and stem will throw the wheel out of balance.

I have the Panaracer Paselas on both of my vintage road bikes. I have the Pasela ProTite on my Marukin M420, and I have regular Paselas on my Cannondale ST500. I went with the regular Paselas on the Cannondale, as it has an aluminum frame, and I didn't want a stiff ride.

I have a couple of bikes that use the 27" size, my finding was that the Kenda and Sunlite were the worst of the non-Chinese sounding tires, the Chinese brands are absolutely horrible; none of those tires were constructed well, you spin the wheel and the tread would squirm and hop. The best tire I liked was the Panaracer Pasela ProTite followed by the Conti Gatorskin DuraSkin tire, both of which are great tires, but the Panaracer lasted about 1,200 miles longer and I never got a flat on one; the Continental one of the tires sidewall blew out for no known reason, it could have a one-off thing, anyway I never went back to Conti after that tire blew, and stayed with Panaracer.

My brother old bike has 32-630 ... my mind blew away. I was thinking I just need to slap a new 28" City Tire on ... now I need to find those retro tires :) Schwalbe Road Cruiser yes it has one with white stripe retro style. Schwalbe people like me ride Schwalbe because I am tired of changing tubes 2 times per week in Germany from all the beer bottles on the road.

My apologies for the black part at the beginning. Something obviously went wrong when I exported the video.

    Just bought new Bontrager T1. (27x1 1/4)
Only gone on two rides. So far I'm impressed. They are a little "heavy" at 440. That weight looks to be designed into the contact patch. I think Bontrager hit a sweet spot between durability, speed, and comfort.

Hey sir. Just wanna ask if these 27" tires can be fit in those 27.5 wheels nowadays?

Seriously thank you for making this video. I have a 1987 Fuji that I don't want to dump TOO much money into but want to get it close to period correct (minus clipless pedals and a modern saddle) and it originally did come with 27" wheels.

What tire would you recommend for riding on both streets as well as gravel trails besides the Kendas?

27.5 is 650b so there are many options.

27 inch is not the same as 27.5 inch. This bike is from the 70s. 27 inch wheels has become an obsolte standard since then

Thanks for the info. I've got myself an old Dawes galaxy with the original 1984 tyres still on that it came with so I'm needing to put fresh tyres on. I want to use it for abit if everything including commuting so my question is which is the best for avoid punchers? If there's not much difference then I'll just get the panaracer tyres like you have as they look great.
    Thanks

This is not the best tire for puncture resistance. It's the lightest and fast-rolling tire in its category. And it's one of the best-looking as well. The tire you're looking for is probably the Continental Gatorskin Hardshell or the Schwalbe Marathon HS 420. I've a comparison table in the following article: www.restoration.bike/bikes-and-parts/27-inch-bicycle-tires/

marathons are sturdy, but heavy. good puncture resistance.

Just a question, is 27 1 3/8 tire the thickest tire for size 27 rim? Thanks

      Based on my research yes.

@@restorationdotbike thanks for the heads up bro! Did my research too just in case there's someone here who want to compare it to 700c tire. The 27 1 3/8 tire is equivalent to 700 x 35c in terms of thickness. It's 34.925 to be exact but I just rounded off to 35 😅

Cool choices/ looks; however you don't cover the disadvantages of these tires; went to read extensive reviews on your choices and ppl out there seem to be having a different impression once they have these tires on their hands; my comment here is neutral ( not attacking or causing hostility )

    • @restorationdotbike

I can't really cover 10 tires in a 5 minute video that well. My goal was to point you in the direction and let you do your own in-depth research based on personal preferences and requirements. I take forum posts and user reviews with a grain of salt. There are a lot of people who are negative about a certain product, which to me doesn't feel like an accurate reflection of its characteristics.
My first pick was the Swifttire Sand Canyon because of the width, weight, looks and the fact they are made by Panaracer. I considered both Kenda's but they are hard to find and would mean buying them from Ebay with expensive shipping costs. They would probably also be quite on the heavy side. Since I already have Panaracer Gravel King tires on another tour bike I finally settled for the Pasela's. They are very light skinwall tires from a Japanese brand, which will look great on my final project.

@@restorationdotbike can't go wrong with japan-made quality- a lot of their tooling is better/more modern than ours. we hooked them up after WWII.
