In the novelization of this film by Allen Dean Foster, there's a scene where Bishop crawls past a hole in the tunnel wall which contains a xenomorph curled up in it. The xenomorph lashes out after being disturbed but calms down again when Bishop stops and does nothing. Eventually, Bishop continues crawling and the xenomorph leaves him alone. Bishop theorises that the xenomorph interprets an android as just another piece of machinery, and attacking him would be as pointless as attacking an engine or a computer terminal. Really interesting detail that could have been great in the movie.

@@Crackshotsteph This is only a theory but his sacrifice might have actually saved Ripley from a similar fate. Considering the angle the Queen's tail goes in (from behind Bishop) it's possible she was trying to skewer Ripley, but since she couldn't detect Bishop she wasn't aware he was standing in the way of her strike.

Watch the scene where Ripley argues with Parker over how to kill the xenomorph.
Ripley is being extremely assertive with Parker to remind him who is in charge. But she stutters because she's terrified about the f*cked up situation that they're in.
Which makes sense because they're not soldiers but average joes being placed in an insane situation by their money hungry employers.
In the sequel, Sigourney Weaver played Ripley the same way. She's not a soldier nor she pretends to be one either. She's just a regular person trying to get over a phase of her life that had become a freakin nightmare.
Makes you think that Ripley was always thinking why she was the only one that survived? Not even her daughter was alive at that point.
Which explains why she wanted to make sure Newt survived.
Too bad Aliens 3 took away Ripley's achievements from the second film and threw them in the trash. No wonder she wanted to just die and get it over with it.

Several things communicated in quick succession.
Bishop volunteers for the dangerous mission, surprising everyone. Up until that point he had mostly hung back and acted borderline creepy.
Hudson says it’s a great idea because it means he’s off the hook. Implicit in what he’s saying is “Isn’t this what androids are for?”
Vasquez seems genuinely impressed by Bishop at this moment because whether it’s logical for him to go or not, whether he has a “soul” or feels pain or fear in the same way as a human, brave is brave.
And Ripley, who carries over a justifiable distrust of androids from the first film and who has treated Bishop with open suspicion before this point, begins to think she might have misjudged him.

    • @Zaxares

@@Zaxares I also love the writing and the way the parameters are expressed in general terms. “The uplink tower at the other end.” “Somebody’s gotta go out there.” It’s all pretty vague but we roll with it because we understand at this point that going *anywhere* on that planet is dangerous. The gift that keeps on giving, the crashed apc All because those idiots open the door and roamed around outside with a crew of two, that was absolutely necessary for him to open the door and run around outside in the rain with aliens roaming around unarmed😊. Really big win for the aliens, that one alien that sacrificed himself on the APC made a huge difference to the choices remaining for whoever was left😊

Note on 1:14 how Bishop, despite being an android and programmed for social interaction, shows signs of great uncomfort as is clear from his eye movements; Lance Henriksen conveys Bishop with such belief, easily being one of the most human characters in the movie.
