All my purses are from trunk shows or thrift/consignment shops. When I got engaged I wanted an affordable ring so that my fiancee could buy me a duplex in my name. We separated but I still have my rental property.

I wanted to travel the world starting in my 20s, but didn't make much money, so I worked 2 full time jobs until I was 32. At 33 I landed a great job that allowed me to continue traveling, eventually buy a house, invest and enjoy luxury. This is my type of conversation. I've always had the mentality " I refuse to make a rich community richer". Gucci, Channel or any of these designers have done NOTHING to contribute to the black community. I desire a house, rental properties & to pack my bags and travel with no suitcases. Material things don't define me. My mental, physical and spiritual health comes FIRST!

a lot of women and men feel so pressured to wear expensive labels that they buy fake Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel etc. it looks crazy because some of these people I know personally and they can’t afford the items and it just doesn’t look right, living in low income but wearing a bunch of labels and they’re fake smh or buying the real thing but can’t afford your rent or can’t buy a home. I know people say that, Coach,Tori Burch etc is cheap, but a $300-$400 bag isn’t to me and at least it’s real. If you can really afford the high end items buy it, but if not, get what you can.

I started my "luxury lifestyle" in my 40s after I locked down my half million pound home and my pension was sorted. Only then did I start to flex a bit with designer things. Validation comes from being financially secure.

I totally agree with you Eva. The amount of luxury items I see some women with, here on UA-cam, I often think, wow! maybe that could have been used for her child's future. It would be nice to hear when Black women, or any woman for that matter, talk about "leveling up" it would be great if they were talking about, saving money for their children's college fund, investing in a Roth IRA, or anything that would improve their life in the future. It's kind of foolish to spend loads of money on items like designer handbags, designer clothing, and other items that don't gain value as they get older, especially if they "really" can't afford it.

I don't think that Black girl luxury should always have a negative discord surrounding it because just like any other culture or society we are allowed to live in leisure and have an abundance of anything that brings us comfort. It's problematic due to the influence that social media has on weak-minded individuals that will do any and everything to achieve or obtain the luxury life. Luxury is not out of touch for black women and this movement implies that it is. It's giving me you can't sit with us vibes.

    Great talk, Eva!
I just enjoyed your guide to online fabric deals (where you also look great with minimal hair).
I scrolled thru yr vid list and picked this 2nd. Sampled some comments, found one pointing out that brand names on outsides of our wardrobe make us billboards.
This point was made in a book loaned to me in 1980 and reissued in 1992: I'd like to recommend _Class: A Guide Through the American Status System_ by Paul Fussel.
(Not the 2019 book Barack likes.)
Another point I recall from it was about "fresh flowers".
If you're specifying "fresh", you feel a need to distinguish from your tacky faux flowers. Posh folks get _flowers_ .
As a janitor I used to clean mirrors in a fine dining room scarred by women testing their gems. My male colleague had to tell me.
I sneer at fast fashion. Since I can do repairs and occasionally follow through on alterations, any style in the modern era comes to meet me at thrift stores. I can sew the historic costumes I want, and the history study makes me see there is no fresh detail in modern clothing that would make me need to change up every season.

Great topic! I watch some of these ladies that show case their luxury purchases on youtube and many can afford it but many can not. I have a couple of designer handbags , which I got 8 to 10 years ago and would NEVER buy another one again. Thank God I was smart enough to own my home before I purchased those items. Drove the Benz for 15 years but when I got another car it was a small SUV (not luxury but new) that I paid cash for. I was fortunate to have a family that has always been into investing so they taught me to invest. So glad many of my friends are into investing and all we talk about is the market and our financial portfolios. We still look nice but we are more into generalizational wealth and being in positions to retire early. Ladies remember the old saying "if it's on your ass it's not an asset"! You feel so much better when you have a balanced lifestyle & money in the bank.

Hi Eva, I respect your point of view and this video so much.
When I was in high school, I was hanging out with a group of friends at a very upscale shopping center. While we were there; we went to the Gucci store to visit another friend who worked there part time. (For perspective: I was one of the few African Americans in my school and normally the only person of color in my class, etc.) We basically had the store to ourselves, and she preceded to tell us that when she was being trained to work at this store, she was told that whenever a Black person entered the store - she was to make sure to follow them and keep a close eye on them. Then she said that every time someone was found shoplifting or attempting to shoplift - every person she saw or heard of was White. That conversation always stuck with me and will never purchase or wear Gucci anything. Truth be told, I equate designer bags and clothes with shrewd marketing and psychological manipulation versus luxury. Part of my work involves marketing and branding, so it’s easier to see past designer names and logos.

The thought, that there may be a ebt card floating around in that bag, shouldn't even pop into one's mind. As Black women, we must understand that not all of our incomes are the same. Black women are making better financial decisions AND are earning much more money now than before.

IMO if your budget does not allow luxury then dnt buy just to keep up with the jones. However, if your budget does allow you to afford luxury items… go for it and buy all the luxury items you want and dnt feel bad abt it. I personally love black women buying luxury bc we are under represented in that area of consumerism. And it shows that you dnt have to be white or Middle Eastern to afford those item. If you like thrifting good for you. If you like paying full price good for you too. Just shop within your budget and there will not be a problem.

This is definitely a generational thing and I think alot is being lost in translation. BGL isn't just an aesthetic and I think that is definitely being missed. I've seen black women on tik tok in all age groups, show their version of luxury and I applaud all of them. But the comments below are disheartening because I see more of a condemnation over material goods. I see more of need to brag about what those in their 20s don't know. I think our good fashion sis, Tenicka B. understands and articulated the BGL movement perfectly.
"When we say “normalize Black women in luxury” we are not merely talking about designer bags or consuming mass amounts of designer clothes. We are talking about a state of leisure, a level of comfort and extravagant living honey. We are talking about a colorful life. A life of abundance. With well made sheets and beautiful scents and eating high quality food. Being intentional. Easy and carefree love. We are talking about everyday delicacies. Taking care of our skin and our well being. We are talking about rest and respite. Self indulgence and putting our needs, our ideas, our lives and our love first. We are talking about Black women moving with a level of grace and opulence whether the outfit is from the thrift store or Champs-Elysees. We are talking about having beautiful views and beautiful candles and beautiful baths and beautiful words. We are talking about normalizing Black women in spaces you thought were only reserved for others. We are saying that you need to readjust your eyes, increase your imagination, let go of your stereotypes, and see the barriers we crossed to get here. That are presence is not nefarious. That we didn’t go into financial ruin for momentary internet fame. This is a lifestyle. We didn’t compromise our values...this is what we value. That we choose everyday to be at what ever kind of luxurious state our life allows. And that the most radical thing we can do as Black women is always nothing at all."

You understand how money works and how to manage it. Everyone needs an Accountant( There’s so many types. Fund/Investment Accountant, Cost Accountant, AP Accountant)You also can learn how to save your own money, manage it through cost effective accounting software like quickbooks( you can even make extra
$$ on the side doing accounting for regular people with your quickbooks). Doing this career made me not just manage other peoples money but how to gain wealth of my own. Cons: it’s a white male dominated field but trust me work hard enough you will get it. It’s take experience and hardwork but you will get it. You might have to start by accounts payable clerk or accounting clerk/assistant first then Staff Accountant then Senior Accountant then Accounting Manager then Controller.
