    Every 90's car that only weighs around 1100-1200kgs (and has ~200hp) is a classic IMO. Every new car now is giant, overweight, looks angry, has power but not nimble.

      In the past I owned two MR2 turbo and now I own a 2017 Subaru BRZ yellow edition. The BRZ is a better handling car than the Mr2 by far, there is no snap under steer in the BRZ. They also say the MR2 turbo was a fast car, but my 205 HP BRZ is slow?

    • @Nemoticon
      @Nemoticon 6 років тому +15

      @@bryanbohlken7653 No such thing as snap understeer, lol... it's snap oversteer and it's NOT bad handling, it's just characteristics of a MR setup. If you get caught by snap-oversteer, you're simply reacting too slowly. Also, the MR2 Turbo was fast in CONTEXT to the cars that it was released alongside competition with, whereas the BRZ is not. Keep learning, you'll get there eventually.

      @@bryanbohlken7653 depends how it's measured. I hear a lot about the sw20s limits but most drivers will never reach it. I'm not inclined to trust your traction control riddled opinions.
      however, The motor in the mr2 is far more tunable than the BRZ. Whilst I do suspect the BRZ's suspension is more up to date and superior with better dampers, as well as lightness it has the motor in the wrong place.
      All in all, htough The w30 or AW11 would wipe the floor with a BRZ

    I loved my sw20.
    I was so sad when it rusted out and I had to sell it on to be parted out.
    Best car I've ever owned.
    It was a 178hp rev3 sw20 with a t-top and couple of mods (3.5 inch exhaust sports cat and a K+N air filter later removed because it destroyed the low down torque)
    Absolute blast of a car.
    It was red it went pink I T-cut it back to red but it was a losing battle.
    :-)
    Best car.
    Luv and Peace.
    PS the cone filter made it sound amazing but it comprimised the car in real world driving. It breathed a bit easier at higher revs and revved a bit more freely but in the lower rev range it was definitely slower.

    Great video! I disagreed about beating the FD; motor week has a video on you tube in which the FC turbo beat the Mr 2 turbo. I have seen many import competitions (Atco,NJ and English Town, NJ to name a few) and those Fds are in the low 7s in the 1/4 mile. Thank you for taking the time to make this video; it was very informative and it covered most of my questions about mr.2 turbo.

      wasnt a bad review but i wouldnt say "most complete review i have seen" theres so many details that he couldve touched on. interior quality, what are the plastics like? how about the seats? whats the visibility like? sound system? are the dials and switches low or high quality? ect. body quality, are they know to rust, are there known problems with boot latches or headlight/ tail light cracks ect. with the engine do they have any problem areas like shitty oil circulation or maybe lifter issues

      not at all, to include all of that the video might be like 3 minutes longer. its like reviewing a movie just from the plot and acting and neglecting music score, cinematography, pacing ect

    • @SnowWhiteMR2
      @SnowWhiteMR2  7 років тому +2

      RedShiftJellyfish RedShiftJellyfish Haha well I think he meant most complete MR2 review, not necessarily any review ever. I didn't want to make the video longer and made decisions on what to include or not, but to answer your questions... Interior is pretty typical early 90s. Plastics are plasticy with the exception of the surprising soft touch dash. Seats have minimal bolsters and springs can annoy in old seats for long drives but are good overall. Visibility excellent. Sound system sucks by modern standards. There aren't any major known issues with body or engine as a whole. However, in wintery areas the subframe braces are very commonly rusted to shit.
      Ultimately I thought these points would detract from the overall message of the video. Hope you enjoyed watching!

    • @mk2mister2
      @mk2mister2 7 років тому +2

      Snow_White_MR2 The 4C and MR2 behave quite a bit differently from one another. The 4C feels much more planted with no body roll, brakes and steering is much sharper and the turbo spools quicker. Mind you, I'm comparing stock for stock.
      However, the MR2 is much less tiring to drive, is much more comfortable especially on long trips, quieter, and much more practical. I always felt the storage space in the MR2 is very good compared to other cars in its class. It's the perfect mix of a GT and an MR sports car. Toyota got the combination perfect with the 2nd gen MR2.

    • @SnowWhiteMR2
      @SnowWhiteMR2  7 років тому

      Makes sense. I mean the 4C is MUCH newer, and more expensive. I thought maybe basic dynamics with them being short wheelbase, transverse, mid-engine, tubo cars. Thanks for your insight! Not many people would be able to speak to that with authority.

    That's an excellent review ! Here in the UK we never officially had the SW20 Turbo but there are many here from 'grey import'. In Jap / Euro spec the turbos that we have are 225 bhp or 240 bhp depending on age. Many of the later 240 bhp cars when run on the dyno were producing around 260 bhp which was a real bonus. They are brilliant cars and sold very well in the UK. We also have a few UK companies that perform V6 conversions which are very nice indeed - not quite as frantic as the turbo but very refined, good torque range, good economy and sound awesome. Great Video, thanks !

    I like how you acknowledged the N/A without bias. I have a 1991 N/A with the 5SFE. It's an early car (#292), it was built on january 1990. There is no power options. It's as spartan as the SW20 gets. The only luxuries I have is A/C and heat, radio, and t-tops.
    That being said, I really enjoy the MR2. It's my daily driver and it takes me to school, to work, and home with no issues. I love how the car feels as is, but I'm temping to put a 3SGTE into it when I can. Excellent video! This makes me even more proud to be an MR2 owner.

    Well done. Thank you for taking the time, making the effort, editting & producing this video. Sure, you look & act like a total geek, but- your points offset the garden hoses of steel & "I need more space" T-shirt. (Glad I didn't just hit refresh when you spoke!) I didn't realize until the end of the video that you are the owner- but, I sense you had enough distance between owner loves/hates/gripes to overall evaluation. Pricing is critical, and, I think you are right on target, and, reflect what MOST buyers will consider. Appreciate all of your effort on this (was joking about about geeky adam's apple- who can focus on what you're saying?). It looks like shifting might cause you some discomfort, not sure what that was all about. Looks the business, and, clearly you are happy with it. When you repair the front lip spoiler- use something other than spaghetti. When it gets wet- you know...

    And I would buy it but theyre too pricy for how old they are. I cant find one under 18k.
    I could buy this same exact car right now cash from a city next to mine. Private seller.
    What do you think in your honest opinion? Should I just buy the MR2 or wait till i can buy an S2K cash?
    I just want it for fun. As my daily/weekend cruising around the city of LA and PCH with my GF.
    No doubt in my mind id choose an S2K over any car but I just want something now and I have the chance to get this beautiful 1991 turbo MR2 right now.

      Both are awesome cars. I personally prefer the MR2. Either one is great for just a fun street car and.both hold their value pretty well. S2K is newer, but now days they're both pretty old so reliability probably just depends on the condition of the individual cars.
      If the S2K is what you want I say just be patient and save. The whole time you have the MR2 you will probably still be dreaming of the S2K and you'll just be that much further from getting it. Thanks for watching!!

      200k is a lot for any car lol. SW20 is pretty old so high mileage just comes with the territory for most of them. You're name says a lot lol. Anyway, yeah the Toyota 3SGTE is capable of really big numbers, but it's cheaper and easier to do it with a K series. I don't see anything wrong with it at all. If I was going for a big numbers build I would definitely consider a turbo K swap. That being said, unless you're going for more than 500whp the k swap probably isn't worth it and you might as well tune the 3S that's already in it. Thanks for watching!

      Snow_White_MR2 i agree with u..... If i was going to buy a MR2 i wouldn't do a motor swop unless the engine was shot........i wouldn't buy a MR2 just to pull a perfectly good engine & trans so i can drop a K series engine in....id build the stock engine as far as i can.......i have a 94 DC4 Integra w/B18C5 engine & trans in it & i am not looking for anything over 300-350whp so thats all id go for in the MR2 as well so no real reason to do a motor swop.........yea i really only buy Honda's simply because i dont have the cash to own more then 2 cars right now let alone have room to keep more then that......but i WOULD buy a nice MR2 if the price was right & the car was taken care of & wont be a lot of problems........i really love the look of this model MR2 .....thanks for the reply GREAT video

      Not the best first car.
      Front wheel drive cars are much more forgiving.
      As a new driver you will likely test the limits of what your new car can do.
      Far better to do that in a car that will understeer safely and scare you a bit than a mid engined sportscar that will send you into a tankslapper and into a tree.
      It's a great third car after some rear wheel drive sedan as a second car.

    Did the revised suspension models (92? and up) eliminate the snap oversteer, or rather how much did it help? Does installing aftermarket suspension help eliminate the pre/post revision snap oversteer, or what else aftermarket can be done to perfect them? I'm eyeing an import '92 SW20 GT...
    Edit: I saw a video saying the suspension revision was '93, but wiki says '92 ("Changes to the suspension geometry, tire sizes and power steering in January 1992 (MY 1993)")? So would the Japanese '92 SW20 GT have the suspension revision or no?

      If you mean compared to other cars in 1991 I would say not really, although there isn't a lot to compare it too. The NSX is a bit more stable just because it's longer and has doubly wishbone. Also, in 93 the MR2 got new control as that made it significantly more stable than before

    Any advice about driving mr2 at the weekend for an experienced fwd driver? Like cornering

    • @SnowWhiteMR2
      @SnowWhiteMR2  7 років тому +2

      Ka Ling Um well ease into things for one. Just get used to it and you'll feel it. I'm not a professional driver. Beyond that, remember this is basically like driving FWD in reverse. So in general FWD if you start to slide you turn in and gradually add throttle. RWD turn into slide and ease off gas. In the MR2 do the same but even more cautiously. Don't panic brake! And like I said in the video use the great grip to your advantage. Slow in and power out early.

    • @mr69it
      @mr69it 7 років тому

      It's a whole different story but, I think that the main thing is just getting a bigger footprint, quality tyre and some coilovers. Then you shouldn't have as many problems if you drive it in the rain or drive it on the track.

    • @clayton8or
      @clayton8or 7 років тому

      If your going into a corner and you need to brake, make sure your not braking hard when actually turning, that will send all the weight to the front tires, meaning a good turn in, but then a REALLY good turn in, so much so your rear end starts sliding, if that happens just let off everything (slowly) and try to apply gentle throttle to regain rear end weight transfer without jerking it all over the place. (also countersteer, but thats normal for just about all RWD oversteer situations) Best thing to do if you dont feel confident (with a reason) with the car, is to spend a bit of time in the rain in a parking lot seeing what will happen in various situations. try braking and turning, accelerating and turning, braking straight, countersteering fast, slow, jumping on the brakes, swerving, etc...

    • @AB-rf3ff
      @AB-rf3ff 7 років тому

      Don't drive it like a FWD car in the corners and you'll be fine. When turning into a corner at a moderately fast speed do not let off the throttle and break this may cause the rear to lose grip and your back end will start to slide. If you start to slide while taking a corner apply more throttle to generate more grip. I'm not a professional driver but I've been driving my MR2 turbo for 10 years and it's a good, fun and enjoyable car to drive but you have to drive it like a mid engine car and not like a fwd car

    I purchased a new 1991 red mr2 turbo and loved it. Fast? One day on an almost vacant interstate I clocked 145 MPH on the speedometer. Unfortunately, a young girl in a Izuzu Trooper totaled it by running a light that " could not have been red because I didn't see it." I later purchased another mr2 exactly like my first one. Car and Driver Magazine road tested one and reported that it ran a 14.7 quarter mile at 94 MPH and a top speed of 143. Fast ( in 1991 ) ? I think so!

    Here are the exchange rates through those years.
    1990 - 1 USD = 135.75 JPY
    1991 - 1 USD = 124.85 JPY
    1992 - 1 USD = 124.8 JPY
    1993 - 1 USD = 111.62 JPY
    1994+ - 1 USD = 99.72 JPY
    You can see that if the MSRP was $25k in 1990, it would then be $34k by '94. But additionally, the 1993+ models had a load of differences/upgrades that came standard. Better brakes, Gen3 engine, Spoiler, Wheels, Suspension, etc. So, it wouldn't surprise me if the actual MSRP was a 30-35% increase over $35k for a Turbo model, which was enough to deter buyers.

    Hey man nice review, I'm saving up for one. Think 7k would be good. Mr2 or soarer

      MaadLuck between those two I would definitely get the MR2, and 7k USD should get a pretty nice one. What country are you in?

      Snow_White_MR2 I'm in the USA. Mr2 how is it in maintenance? I currently only have 2k but still saving. I just got my dreams crushed of getting a Toyota supra 1995. They go for 45k.

      Haha yeah a MK IV Supra is a much more expensive car. as for MR2 maintenance it's a Toyota, so pretty simple. Same for the Supra for that matter.

    I've owned my 1992 MR2 turbo for about 14 years. Only time I ever spun it was at Summit Point raceway. I've had a couple of tail happy moments that gave me pause, but mostly, once you gain a feel for the car you'll be fine as long as you don't drive like an idiot.

      The only reason why this car is so famous for the "snap oversteer is that its the cheapest mid ship car on market. So many people bought it and drove it like normal rwd car and did not know anything about how to drive this type of car.

    Too bad these cars are now forever out of the hands of people who make less than 150k a year. Such a beautiful machine

      Whoa what market/region are you looking at? In north America you should easily be able to get one for $10-15k. You could get an extremely clean collector's one for $25-30k
