    If I understand your question correctly, the convention that I am used to is to show the shear force acting down on the part of the beam to the left of B and up on the part of the beam to the right of B.

    I was wondering if it's at all possible for you to do a video about non-uniform distributed loads on a beam with SF and BM diagrams. That would be super helpful. Thanks

  • @wookie08
    @wookie08 10 років тому

    So the moment is what direction the beam will rotate about a fixed point, in this case the wall is the fixed point for the first moment of force (torque) and then 100 lb force to the right is the other fixed point the object will rotate around. Because " v " force is less than 100 lbs, the beam will rotate around the wall or in this case the 100 lb load. Right? Moment defined by math is the cross product between two forces (vectors) and so a moment as shown in this is example is a vector itself, not a scalar.

    • @tejara01
      @tejara01 9 років тому

      I was confused with moment's for a while, khanacademy cleared that up. It's just a force acting parallel to an point. The way I understood was a diagram of a swing. If you push someone on it you're applying a moment around where the chain is secured

    I don´t understand why V is positive 100lb instead of negative 100lbs. It would make more sense since in the FBD of the left part of the beam you need a downward force in order to balance the wall upward 100lbs.

    • @Octavarium666xyz
      @Octavarium666xyz 8 років тому

      +Alvaro Zerkowski it is downward facing force. The eqaution is build with prediction of downward facing V

    It would be helpful tp redo this without the mistakes and the reversing of signs!
    Wouldn't it be easier to express the final equation (following the logic used for the previous one) as M+V*2ft=0 therefore M=-200ftlbs?

    • @Octavarium666xyz
      @Octavarium666xyz 8 років тому

      +djadameve It just depends on which point you consider while doing the moments. I wouldn't say it's easier, it's just another way.

    Why the 8 ft part you had 8xV but 2 ft part you didnt have 2xV?

    • @conbatengineer
      @conbatengineer 8 років тому +2

      +Loong Kam Yong Because he is taking the moments about a fix point. In the 8ft part, he is taking the moments about the far left point. On the second he is taking the moments about the left side which makes V go through the point making it a moment of zero.

    taking moments about point A @ 10:20 round there, shouldnt that moment be 0? Because if your're takign moments about A distance is 0, so how can the moment be 1000 :(

    • @johnlibby3345
      @johnlibby3345 11 років тому +2

      taking a moment about a point means you multiply all perpendicular forces times their distances from the point. M=F*d since the force of 100 pounds is 10 feet away from point A (its moment arm)-- -100lbs (downward) * 10 feet (distance from point a) = -1000ft*lb. or 1000ft*lb clockwise.

    Great video, I would say try to sound more charismatic and talk faster, the information is there but it does kind of send me to sleep.
    Maybe drink a few redbulls or several cups of coffee and then make the video, and if you talk faster then you can type speed the video up to match.
    Although to be fair this is an old video and I would say you have improved in your more recent ones.

    your horizontal forces are NOT balanced. Look at your horizontal yellow and orange
    components !!!
    The way you also classify the loads are wrong. Your mental classification is incorrect.
    You should say axial force which is comprised of tension and compression.
