I don’t think the whole dress and diamond rings started to be a thing for somewhat ordinary people until the 1920s and 1930s when catalogs started portraying them as the ONLY way to get married. @@patrochilles6275 of course you "can" wear white, but it's definitely not common. You rarely see someone wearing a white gown on the red carpet, for example. In our culture, we associate white dresses with marriage.
In the Roman Catholic church Spanish women would wear black wedding dresses representing being with the husband till death and the color black means Mystery Strength elegance formality and sophistication. It also gives the women a sense of power and authority
Wait really? I live in Spain and my family is Christian Catholic, but we've never seen a bride in black, was that before Queen Victoria? Edit: spelling
in Italy white dresses for marriage are quite a "modern" thing, common people started to wear fancy white dresses only after WWII, before that time only rich people could afford such a dress so common people used to wear dresses that could have been adapted and reused and, most of the times, dresses weren't white but brown or black . RAELENE HOLEMAN I agree completely and her mom didn't tell her she couldn't get a black gown, she said for her it was white that meant wedding. In the end she went along with what her daughter wanted anyway, just because what her daughter wanted was more important than what she wanted. No one should be hating on this mom. She's just trying to get her head around something that let's face it is usually the complete opposite of what most brides are looking for anyway.
I don’t think she would’ve looked good in a white or cream colored dress anyway. She has really pale skin and her hair is very blonde - a white dress and veil would have washed her out and overall just wouldn’t look good paired with her complexion and hair color. The black makes her features really pop and accentuate everything really nicely. I’m the same way - even though my skin isn’t nearly as pale as hers is I’m still relatively pale and I have this same problem all the time so I tend not to wear white or even pale colors. And I’ve decided to wear a black or red wedding dress when I get married for the main fact that white and creams wash me out really badly.
Yep. I'm as pale as she is, and can confirm that even the "champagne" color they love as "universally flattering" on SYTTD is /awful/ on me. I simply cannot wear white, cream, champagne-even tan is straight out. Pale pink? Nope. …it's probably not a coincidence my wedding dress was black, too. 😉 (I had planned on red, but very last minute fell in love with a Tadashi Shoji black dress I found on a return rack, and decided to make it my wedding dress.)

Yes! I think the mom is wonderful. You cant expect someone to immediately change their lifelong cultural views. She is very obviously trying to adjust & that is something that we all take time to do when things are different from our conventional lifestyle. The bride is completely untraditional and that's probably hard to swallow for such a traditional parent. That being said the mom is understanding that it's not about her and it's about her daughters happiness. It may take a bit of time but she will come around full circle one day.

Not these types of conservatives. Conservatives are confused people that don’t know history, just what the generation right before them did.
If I remember correctly, the white dress wasn’t really a thing until the Victorian era, and even then mostly for rich/ noble born people since white was an expensive fabric to make and keep white. I don’t think the whole dress and diamond rings started to be a thing for somewhat ordinary people until the 1920s and 1930s when catalogs started portraying them as the ONLY way to get married. The modern symbology of a wedding is only around 100 years old and comes solely from a marketing gimmick
Actually it was red and blue
Black was and still is the color at funerals. Before Queen Victoria brides did wear different colors, but not black

The white dresses don’t really suit her. She’s right when she says she rather have black.
It's because she blond and has pale skin which trust me (because i'm blond with pale skin) makes you look like a white pice of printer paper and everything is getting washed out by the white which is why blonds look better in light pinks, almost any blue or green, and black

You are sooo right! Because moms shouldn’t give their opinions even though that’s whose opinion matters the most her daughter.
Moms have a vision too and if you seriously don’t respect your moms opinion nor do you want your mom to be honest and give it.
Then you must not have a good relationship with your mom.
Or you must not have kids.
Although as moms we want to be sweet and love everything are kids do.
We need to tell the truth and give are opinions no matter what.
@@Whydtheyaddusernames There is such a big difference between forcing your beliefs on someone, and simply giving someone a motherly and helpful opinion. This woman was hell bent on getting her way and her way only. That doesnt sound like an opinion, that sounds like forcing something. This entire attitude she seems to have towards this wedding actually isnt about the dress, its about the marriage. So if its the marriage she has a problem with, then mother or not her opinion is completely irrelevant. ok i’m sorry but the mom isn’t even paying for the dress. I really liked dress number 2 in black:/
Honestly! It would look so pale and yellow like old paper TwT

My dad has had to tell her more then once to chill. And the real kicker is she wore a baby blue wedding dress when she and my parents got married. So 🤷🏼♀️
Edit: and I’m not even married nor engaged, I don’t even have a boyfriend! And yet she’s still trying to convince me it’s a bad idea. She’s all “you’ll change your mind” or “we’ll make you change your mind when the time comes”

Which, you know, that might have been a thing once upon a time, but nowadays? Not the tax bracket I married in, anyhow. (And the divorce settlement did the job an engagement ring wouldn't have done. She probably would have been horrified that the only reason I have an engagement ring from my second spouse was to have a clear "proof of engagement" for both my work and for immigration. 😂And that ring still isn't "proper" - it's a black opal in a silver setting.)

My parents married young and rather rushed and so my mom didn’t get to have the wedding she quite wanted and since I’m not only the oldest child but the oldest daughter she’s really set on living vicariously through me. Me: “Then get one for yourself” 🙄
The most painful part is she isn't even paying for it.
Right she is like some of my cousins. I want I want I want. And they are younger then 7
I know i wish i could say to the mothers like her ITS👏NOT👏YOUR👏WEDDING👏
Honestly, at that point I would just tell my mum to get out. I love my mum, don't get me wrong, but this should be a day all about me and my partner, not about the opinion of my mum.
I think that the mom is used to being conservative. But I can see that she's trying...like really hard! To support her daughter, its just a bit harder than you think.
"you always wore princess dresses when you were a little girl"
"because you made me!" 😂
Honestly tho parents think when you did something as a child it still applies when you’re older. You did everything as a kid because your parents wanted it especially clothes

The mom is definitely trying. She didn’t grow up in an accepting era. We can’t judge her because we don’t know what our views would’ve been even a decade before we were born. She’s trying and is becoming more open minded. She’s able to grow as a person and that’s what matters
She's definitely trying. She's pretty clearly still very uncomfortable with it but she is trying.
At the very least she is being there and trying to be involved with the wedding planning, rather than disowning her daughter for who she choose to marry
Thank you, finally others who see this! For someone who would normally be very conservative, the mom is doing amazing! She's getting there, just give her time :)
Right like idk why everyone thinks shes so horrible... i thought she was very sweet actually. Shes just a different generation lol
"It's her wedding day....! I imagine her in a white dress!"
"With her *prince charming!*"
This mom is rude, let the bride pick! And I personally felt offended when she said *prince* charming, when she is marrying a girl?
Go pride!!
THE MOM ISN’T EVEN PAYING FOR THE DRESS!
Well I’m sorry but the mom gets a say none the less. She carried her daughter for nine months and raised her. She tried to support her even though she didn’t agree with her. She loves her. She paid for her tuition throughout her life. She invested so much I her daughter, she deserves to at least have her opinions be said. She loves and cares for her daughter even though she did the opposite of everything her mom dreamt of
@@Alexis-go5cd lol doesn't mean she should sacrifice things that she love for it nobody ask to be born lol. Everyone have dream and what they want to wear for their wedding
@@Alexis-go5cd Let me tell you why this comment makes no sense. To start just because she carried her and have her basic needs doesn't mean she gets the right to say what the bride what's on her damn wedding that she's paying for. Sure the mom can have an opinion but she gets no say and right to stop her grown daughter from wearing what she wants.

okay why so many hate comments to the mom ;-; i feel like she spent all that time raising her daughter that she had an idea of her life, when it didn't go as planned she wanted it to at least go her way a little... i feel like with these things you really can't say the mom doesn't have a say because its not her wedding, she does. When you have a daughter you have an idea for whats best for them and imagine carrying a baby, planning and dreaming for years to find out that not even a single thing goes as planned, its honestly kind of sad...
@@Alexis-go5cd no its not. that "mom" doesnt know her baby will grow up having their own mind and preferences. whats *really* sad is that the daughter probably never got accepted by her mom.
I feel like every comment the mom made about the dress always stared with "I..."
"I want a ball gown"
"I want an ivory dress"
I would've LOVED for the daughter to come back at her and say
"Well *I* want you to wait in the car, mom."
plus its not the moms money buying the dress
@@voiceofsaph3225 Honestly though same!
I know! It's not even her wedding either! It's the bride's decision. But she wanted to find a dress that her mom would also like.

The mother seems really manipulative, and it seems that she was always that way

"Cuz you made me!"
Slushy119 sounds like my mother was an emotional hell when I was first dating my hubby and my mother was like “oh trust you to love someone from far away” well sod you mum and your conditional love. True love is unconditional.
I mean, we all wore things as children that we don't wear as adults!
Andrea D of course that is true, but the daughter said the mom *made* her wear princess dresses, so I assume that she never actually wanted to wear them. And now she doesn't want a white dress, but the mom still has something to say about that

When she said " I imagined a Prince Charming and a white dress and now she has a PRINCESS Charming" and then didn't even mention that the bride wanted a black dress. a "true mother" would teach you grammar and correct spelling. A mother is a mother, not a "friend" who'll say yes to whatever.
Sure, mothers aren't friends and they shouldn't be, but they also shouldn't try to control their daughters' preferences on something so arbitrary that has literally no effect on them. It's a friggin dress color, and she's not going to be the one wearing it. Also her daughter is an adult that doesn't require her mother's permission in the first place.
These girls literally have the coffee shop love story that all the gays want. This is incredible.

I know everyone is bashing the mom but at least she is really trying. That's a whole lot more than most would do for their child
I felt she wasn't being very genuine throughout the entire thing. It seemed like she was just saying the things she thought she needed to say for the cameras 😒
DaniHGirl I think considering the fact the bride had invited her along to the dress fitting and even invited her along to an LGBT event, they’re generally close enough. Definitely her mother isn’t being the most supportive and she seems uncomfortable but for someone who doesn’t have the ‘traditional’ daughter ((lesbian, wanting the black wedding dress)) that she wants, she’s putting in a lot of effort for most people who are similar to her towards their children
@@louisianafriedchickenyeet4654 You're right. Also, it's okay for people to have different opinions. We don't just need to be accepting of the LGBT Community, we also need to be accepting as a whole. Just because someone doesn't like a black wedding dress doesn't make them a bad person.
You're probably right. I mean it's all not ideal but she's trying and that's definetly a good start
DaniHGirl I agree. She wasn’t trying hard enough to me.
I don’t think her tattoos worked well with the white dresses but they really looked better with the black versions. It just felt like it was in the same ball park with her personality and her appearance.
