I thank you for this from the bottom of my heart! We have a deaf parent that comes into the school, and she always has to write doen everything she needs. Im trying to learn ASL for her!
I applied a job at my local coffee shop near my house and I wanted to do sign language to help my co workers to understand signs of a deaf person plus this would really help me so much especially working as a barista. Thank you so much for this!
Thank you for the video today at the coffee shop I work at we had two people who were deaf that was first for me and today I decided to learn barista sign language signs for we they come in next. This was very helpful.
Maybe a video with general customer service would be nice also. Thank you these videos are very well made, I can definitely learn sign language to communicate with my future customers.
im starting a new job as a barista at a local coffee shop, and im in ATX where we host around 20% of the deaf population in the state. I want people to come in and feel welcomed and relaxed, so im picking up some asl! thank you so much!
Oh my god thank you so much for this video!! I’m a barista and there are these two ladies who are deaf who come in a lot and I always feel bad that I can’t properly communicate with them. This was really helpful even if it’s just basics! It goes a long way and I’m excited to converse with them :)
One critique I have is that sometimes showing the full form of the signs is neglected. Especially pumpkin. I saw the orange part of the sign but I could not make out the hand form for pumpkin. You can say it's just thumping your hand, but if we can't see your form, we will wonder to thump with what. Middle finger, index, pinky? I've been watching these videos a good while lately and theyre pretty good, but if you're making these for beginners, try to be mindful of all aspects of form. Placement, location, direction (clockwise, counterclockwise, left, right, forward, backward, up, down, slant, etc.), How many taps or movements. I just felt this would be crucial because this could lead someone to improperly sign something. Like how you say eyebrows and expression is important, I would think the other elements I mentioned are crucial as well.
I am extremely new. New to finding this channel, new to ASL, and new to everything. But I could really use any help I could get. I want to take this seriously and learn it So just wondering, could you sign your intros and the whole conversation as if the volume and subtitles are turned offI know I have no room to talk but it helps me learn if you sign everything you say. It helps me learn the nuances and read the signs better. I can show them but not read them quickly. If you you used them with all your speech it might help me learn. On the other hand I understand if that may be a bit too much for other beginners. Regardless. Thank you.
The reason I don't sign and talk the intros is the signing wouldn't be in correct ASL structure. My hope is followers not only learn the signs but the structure of ASL as well.
Great video! I wonder if the Deaf Community has signs for specific drinks like Americano, Macchiato, Frappuccino, etc.? I haven't seen any except for Espresso.
Hi. So lovely video. Is there possibility, that you will show us some more words like for sugar, lactose free milk, oat milk , soya milk, napkin, "to go"? That would be so lovely. Thank you anyway!
I work at a Tim Horton's that also sells chicken wraps, combos/meals (however it's said), chicken and roast beef sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches on an english muffin/biscuit. How would I ask about stuff for that?
I’m a Barista and I’m losing my voice a lot due to allergies and throat conditions. so switching to sign has been an amazing help not just to me but customers who also use this language. I hope someday learning this become standard in schools.
At the end there is a different sign for loving an object, the sign she used was for loving a person. But this was a great video! Defiantly will be referencing it for working in retail!
I learned more here in four weeks than in I did over the last four years using a dvd! So helpful with the slow mo and reasons for the sign and tips for remembering them. Just SUPER!!!
I think my favorite thing about ASL or any Sign (or any language tbh) is the etymology behind it. Thanks for always including the etymological tips and the literal translations!! It makes the signs have a more emotional context and be easier to remember.
I miss signing to my best friend/sister. I met her when I was 7 years old & when I was 8 asked her to teach me to sign, I'm now 59 yrs old & hadn't seen her in 15 years cause of me moving away. It's came in handy knowing sign language cause once in awhile I meet a deaf person. I started signing in the church during service & people have notice & comment about it. We have music camp for kids ages 5-11 yrs old for 5 days before school starts & was asked if would teach them to sign the Bible Verse for that week, I didn't hesitate to say yes. I encourage anyone that wants to learn a different language sign language is the best one to learn
Someone just caught me watching this video, and they showered me in moral support. 😁🥰 What you're doing; your positivity and commitment to helping others Might just be infectious. 👏👏👏 a continued many thanks.
thank you!! i have a deaf customer who is a regular at my dunkin and even though i know his order by now i want to do more than just give a smile and thumbs up ya know.. i hope he doesn’t mind me pulling these out next time i see him😬😭
Hey!! I know it's been 2 years, but how did it go? I have a deaf Customer and I also memorized his order but I still sign it back to him because I wanted to do more than smile and thumbs up also!! I also learned "HOW are YOU?" So we always say hi now
I found watching this video once or twice. Then going back with the volume off and captions on makes it much more easier to learn. The silence really helps submerse you in their world for a moment to give a better understanding.
Love this video a lot. I work at Starbucks and we have some regulars who are deaf and I want to make it easier for them to order. Thank you very much 💕
My friend taught herself ASL when she was 7, and I also started learning it when I was around 6, but we both lost everything we learned and I only knew the basics to begin with lol so this video is very helpful. We’re re learning it now.
I'm planning on applying for a job as a barista at Starbucks soon, and thought that I should try my hand (pun intended) at some ASL so as to better communicate with customers who are deaf or hard of hearing; so this video really fit the bill! Your channel is wonderful, and I appreciate the effort and positivity you put into your videos! I look forward to seeing more in the future!
Im a starbucks barista with a deaf regular. after the first two times he came in i decided to learn his order in sign and some other stuff so i can actually connect with him and make conversation like any other customer. the smile on his face when i signed back was absolutely everything
Thanks to you I met a deaf cashier and was able to make small talk. I made her smile and that has made me more motivated to learn asl. Thank you so much!!!!!!
You are so fun to watch, I just found you by accident. I just started Sign Language 2, and I'm feeling overwhelmed. I think your videos are going to be super helpful and fun to watch.
I love your videos. I decided to take up sign language, because I have been rehired as a Cast Member at Walt Disney World, an I think learning sign language as best as I can, will be so beneficial to my hearing impaired guests. Any chance you could do a video on retail shopping and maybe Disney merchandise?
No gonna lie, I teared up think of you leaning for those who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing. It’s such a magical place and you doing this will add extra magic to their day. (Tiny secret: my dream job when I retire is to be an interpreter at DisneyWorld☺️)

I run a gym and we have a deaf person who joined, that is why I am trying to learn sign...have become a big fan of yours and am watching your videos...I learned to slow down the vids and to watch faster lol...thank you for your vids
You are very helpful I want to learn sight so if I become besties with one I know how to communicate thank you so so much you are really helpful and I mean it
I work at a McDonalds and we have a lot of deaf people come in who write down what they want and they would always look down because of it I have been taking asl at school but never felt comfortable talking with them other than the occasional hello, my teacher taught us how to say total and how to sign money but I don't know how to use it in a situation if you could make a video about that topic I would really appreciate it.

The sign for honey could also mean sweet so I would probably spell out honey since adding sweetener is also an option in a coffee shop. Unless you work at Dutch Bros because then sweet is the ONLY option.
I went without speaking for 3 days because a friend said i talk too much. I had a great conversation with a guy that was def when i went to a bar two nights later. It was great to communicate in other ways and learn more.
Hi there! Current ASL and interpreting student here. I came across your page just now and was wondering why this video does not have any captions? The whole point of this video is for learning, but it is not accessible to the Deaf or HoH. Even when the automatic UA-cam captions are added to some of these, the quality is terrible.
Hi Emily! Thanks for checking out our channel and so good to see a fellow ASL and interpreting student. We actually used to do closed captioning on all of our videos, but analytics showed very few people were using them. It does take a considerable amount of time to add custom captions and at the time we decided to stop doing it to better balance our most valuable resource, TIME. However, as our channel has grown in the last several weeks we have seen an uptick in people looking for that feature. I also just wrapped up my masters degree and have more capacity so I think it’s a great idea to start adding them again. We will certainly strongly consider it. Thanks for the suggestion and best wishes to you on your journey to become an ASL interpreter!

Great suggestions. I'll add it to the list.
This will definitely help me if i get the job as a flight attendant

I saw a video where Minnie was telling this little boy nice to meet you and he cried and hugged her.
Your sign for "Anything else?" looks like a combo of ANY + OTHER. Is that right? There's a little more to it than the standard OTHER sign?
Too fast for a beginner! It's overwhelming. Maybe I'll catch on faster if I follow along in front of a mirror.
Using a mirror is great idea. Also try stopping or slowing down the video to review.
