70 years old and now finally have time and resources to get back into RC. I find your videos helpful as I set up planes and helicopters . Trying to set my grandson up to be able to participate in the hobby. Thanks for your time and especially camera crew.
A tip to strengthen the wood is to soak it with thin CA. I do this on battery trays and screw holes. Just make sure there is good ventilation while the wood dries. Awesome plane! Can't wait to see the next in the series.

Gorgeous plane. The last foam plane (Flightline B25) I bought was $529 for PNP plus another $130 for a receiver. $660 compared to $850 for the balsa BNF. No regrets on the B25, but another $190 for a bigger balsa plane seems like decent value to me.
This is my first viewing of you unboxing and setting up a plane... You are great and so is Meghan... I had so many laughs. You are making me want to buy every plane out you reviewed even though my son and I can barely fly the Sport cub! LOL

Finally, they did this plane in balsa. I love the balsa planes man. They hold up so much better than the foam planes do and look so much more real. Thank you sir may I have another please😁

BTW Ramey RC is awesome....his accent is really thick and at times it can be a little hard to understand what he says but he's a brilliant builder and his work speaks for itself man.. its just awesome. And as for my CA, I keep it at room temperature. I don't put mine in the fridge either.
On the $849 price. I speced out a Sig Senior Cadet ARF with a Spektrum motor, 80 amp ESC, 6 channel receiver, prop, spinner and 6 Hitec HS-311 servos @ $14 each. Total was $862 and similar to the Timber ARF because the parts you need are almost identical. Yes, you can go cheaper on some of the parts, but you can do that on the Timber too. Balsa models are more expensive than foam. If you don't like the price don't buy it. Mine is on pre-order.
100% and that's why many don't get the more expensive planes. Not everyone can afford this type of plane, and I totally get it. The difference with these balsa planes, is that it'll be in GREAT shape in 10 or 15 years, whereas the foamies will have loads of hangar rash, and just deteriorate more. I still love foam, don't get me wrong, but once in a while, balsa wood is just dang cool!!!! Appreciate your comment - Thanks!

Am using WIHA tools Hax and screwdrivers which I bought from Tower Hobbies about 30 years back and the quality is magnificent and they have followed me from Pakistan to New Zealand and now in Australia and could not find that quality of workmanship on any other tool yet.
Great job on the 2000 mm TurboTax Timber! When Installing nuts in a hole, place a piece of masking tape over the end of the nut driver and push the nut into the tape. It will hold the nut in place. I'm a retired aircraft mechanic and that trick saved my butt alot.
I'v gained so much from your site in setting numerous planes up over the years. Thank you for that. One thing that's always bugged me is the fact you set your planes up with the prop on. The first things I taught my grandson in flying RC was to always have the prop off until your actually ready to fly and always treat these LiPo's as small grenades. I don't trust any thing electronic, especially when my fingers are at stake. . And my batteries are either fully charged before flight, or in storage mode tucked safely away in an ammo box or safer. One thing I always do as well is to balance my props. Ok - I"m done complaining - do it because I don't want to see some one (you) get hurt because something "should have been off". A great teaching moment for our kids and those new to the hobby. Wouldnt you say ? Russ

J'ai deja récupéré un avion RC avec un air2s, et un hélico semi-maquette avec un hubsan zino et un eméteur 5,8ghz sanglé en dessous pour avoir un vrai retour vertical, parce-que mine de rien ce vieux coucou de zino est si lourd (avec une 3s 5000mah qui depasse de 5cm derriere, ca résiste à des vents de fou et soulève un éléphant ! ) Content pour toi au final, c'est tellementt frustrant de savoir un de ses drones dans la nature, c'est nos bébés à nous les passionés! À+ amigo 😉
I used to work for perryman company whom is a titanium manufacturer. The supplied ti to Lockheed Martin for the build of the sr-72....Perryman is in Washington county, PA., which is were I'm from too. O got late off when the plague hit, they called me back but wanted to send me to the plant that is 1-1/2 hour drive one way so I said no thanks. I miss working for perryman, they used to be a good company.
Brian - love your channel! Quick question - if you put floats on this Timber and fly it off of water, is there any concern for the exterior servo(s) getting wet???
I just had another question - all the foamies do this too...shouldn't be an issue, but if you're real concerned, just make a plash guard for the rear servos. Gotta keep in mind, the servo is mostly splash shielded already, and if you get water into the electronics, you'd be already under water, and for some time - might have already been a "bad day" if that happens. Either way I will share about this after I do floats when our pond is done :) I can't wait!!!
Great video, this helped me fully setup this aircraft having no prior knowlage of balsa planes or bnf style aircraft. The only thing I'm confused about, is it seems like every other tutorial for binding controllers involves a bind plug, and I didn't notice you using one. I also didn't need one to bind my transmitter, and I was able to get safe select working as well. Does this aircraft just have a receiver that doesn't need a bind plug or something?
We now have a push button we press to BIND. You can also use a plug, if you wish, and some other brands still use a plug. the newer Rx'es have a button.
Per my earlier suggestion, beeswax (or toilet wax ring) works great to hold screws onto screwdriver, and also works great to hold nut in the nutdriver.
A great video and thank you for the very informative detail of the ESC set up. I wanted to buy this model as I already own the 1.5M variant. However, I am so disappointed that E flite have permitted two external servo controls! They are not weather proof, will get drenched if you use floats and being a tail dragger, will collect all manner of material off a grass runway. Finally, in my view, what was a beautiful looking aircraft, has been ruined by poor design. Anyhow, thank you for you and Megan's hard work producing this material, even with a sore throat!
I understand your concerns. Two external servos at the tail might be getting a tiny bit wet, but to be honest, I guess I just haven't ever had anything come of that issue. Keep in mind, most all the foamies are the same way...BUT I guess it's not totally inconceivable that one could run into issues. Couldn't one make a cover, similar to what the UMX planes use over the linear long throw servos??? Might that solve your concern? Also, and to be fair...I LIKE having them out, WAY easier to service....BUT they are pretty much butt ugly. The cover would help with both issues, OR a super skilled balsa wood crafter could fairly easily move them inboard, OR at least up front, with long control rods. Thanks for the feedback, and I hope you get a chance to see one in person. It might change your mind ;) ..& Thanks for being here with us too!
That's cool so long as you're not talking about any plastic to metal contact areas, then if you REALLY want thread locker, you gotta get the thread locker on the bolts/screws and then let it dry before installing them. It's the solvent that makes it runny that will cause cracking and weakening the plastic. I've learned that lesson a few times over, and thankful it was in my earlier RC days ;)
brian i love watchin your thorough videos especially if i plan to b uy that model. my only wish that it seems like you go thru the radio setup a little faster than you did with the build. i know alot of people know but that screen looks different on different radios. there are different methods to do what you accomplshed also. i had to gripe about something, but thats just me. keeep up the great work buddy
The only thing I know about lock type is it won't stick if your bolts are oily. So make sure the bolts your lock tighting are free of oil. And the whole you're putting them in is free of oil and keep lock tight away from any plastic. It will turn it to potato chips. That's what it turns into like. Crispy potato chip feeling stuff and it just yes, bricks down in the dust. Basically, it will completely destroy any plastic. It comes in contact with..
If that were true, the MFG'ers wouldn't be able to apply it to bolt before shipping them in packs. Might be a slightly different formula, but my understanding (which I've proven a few times so far) is that the solvent will eat plastic. Maybe the stuff on the bolts from the MFG'ers is PAINT and not Loctite?
I watched the whole video, and i dont even fly!. I want to this spring. Im starting with the aeroscout cause of the prop behind cab. Is it on your site Brian?... I will buy it thru your channel man.
My flaps out of the box were weird, ended up taking servo arms off and replacing 2 or 3 notches up or down on the splines. Like yours, the servos were bottoming out on the up position. The figures in the book are a mile out

Love the big Balsa bird. I would put inflatable s landing gear on it to quiet it down and give it a smoother ride. 50$ to 75$ price reduction would make me smile . Knowing you have an upgraded ESC and all , you have no retracts and such . Even knowing manufacturers have more labor in Balsa planes.. Don’t get me wrong I love it. Just my thoughts for a man that has more planes than he has room or brains.😂

It looks to be a fantastic model , however I am very sceptical and not impressed that it has plastic clevis's !!! Those plastic pins are not as strong or have the longevity as metal ones ! Not keen on paying $1599 Australian ! What is your opinion on plastic clevis's? I have written off a PC -9 1500 mm wspan because of elevator plastic pin failure .I Appreciate your response Cheers Bomber.
Brian, I flew my new Turbo Timber SWS 2.0 for the first time today at my AMA club. I love it! I'm new and I see it as a plane I can grow into. However, my trainer and the builder/programmer, who also love the plane, noticed that it makes a strange high pitched sound when flying. Their best guess is that there is not enough air flow out of the fuselage. I couldn't find anything in the manual that mentioned creating one, as some apparently do. Nor could we find a location meant to create one. Do you hear this when you fly it? Any ideas?
I really wish Eflight would utilize 6 and 12 pin connectors instead of separate servo connectors. The whole, "Rats Nest" of wires and connectors is so frustrating with these planes. Especially when you have to remove the wings for transport to and from the airfield.
Brian, how big of pond are you building, and do you have some kind of boat to retrieve a plane when needed? I like this plane with the canopy compared to the 1.5m Turbo! 👍😁
Industrial scale tech? Not a awful job and pays pretty decent but what does Mrs. Phillips do? No offense, im trying to figure out the house and property and the amazing collection. Again no offense, I am jealous and need to figure the trick out lol. Anyways awesome build and plane and its one I may pick up soon.
Awesome plane, you NEED it ;) bprc.me/Timber My "trick" ;) - I work on industrial scales. Much of my work is checking and calibrating scales. Some is installing scales, while other parts had be integrating my equipment to periphery industrial equipment, such as large scale food systems, chemical plants, truck scales, railroad scales, all the way down to analytical balances in laboratory environments. For the sake of clarity, lets just say that I work HARD to take care of what people need. I have an opportunity to touch many lives, and because I take care of customers, they keep having me back...for decades. This makes it hard for my company to shed me off like a parasite ;) LOL JK, they take good care of me, and I take good care of them back. Opposite this effort, for almost two decades now, me and my wife (and family) are very frugal. We save and give routinely, and our investments have been lucrative, but some might say they're more risky than most would tolerate (which may be true for most). I don't stop...just ask my Megan. Also, don't discount the almost one decade doing this "side gig" and the fact that we operate a small farm here too, which is after all, a "first generation farm" being operated in good faith, for a profit intensive ;) (you will get it, if you farm - if you don't I can't explain it here). Basically, we're hard workers, and I drive my wife crazy with it...then we live like we don't have it, except for things that are part of our multi-pronged approach to long investments, our property being one of them. We live and run a very tax efficient lifestyle, aka, we don't waste a single opportunity to take advantage of legal way to shed tax liability as we have come up in our careers. Also, if I didn't mention it, my wife is a few credits short of a masters degree, and it makes us a TON of money (that was a hilarious joke - she was a teacher for 10 years, and she almost never made as much as I did with my Associates Degree - LOL LOL LOL - but she was and is a HARD worker). Okay, I could go on, but don't want you to get the wrong idea. Your question is fair, and I want to answer it as well as I can, and I could and would tell you WAY more about our exact situation if I were in person with you, BUT on a public forum, I gotta keep it a bit more vague. I'm a pretty transparent type of guy, and love to help others get as far as they can get. I'm always working with my customers in this regard...some to a larger degree, and some to an almost non-existent degree, just depends on how much time we get to spend together. It's fun too, since I get to see people on somewhat regular frequencies, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, annually, and I get to see what's going on with their pursuits, and share how ours are going. I think this may play a role in why I enjoy such a good career - I care about my customers, personally and professionally, and they care about me - it can and does happen...but it's not easy. Hope this helps, and hope you can read between the lines enough to get what you need from what I CAN say to answer your question.
Hey Brian l have the E-flite Viper 90mm Jet wanted to know how to setup thrust reverse on it l have the Spectrum DX8E transmitter there a Bec wire coming from the Avian 130amp ESC don't know what that for can you tell me what to do about thrust reverse
My turbo timber prop came alive with the throttle cut on while on the table in AS3X mode. I believe my Tx lost connection with it, but it almost got me. From now on prop stays off.
We plan to do it. It'll be a super easy mod, and we already have it on our docket...but just waiting a few weeks or months to cover this part. We usually try to line this up for when we do our "Second Thoughts" but also depends on if the planes are in stock or not. We TRY not to put out a video, if planes are impossible to get...but we often fail. Okay, here's a couple in the mean time to tide you over. Mine remain question was to confirm my thoughts that I have to relearn the servo settings as the receiver was not set with Crow. After watching that video you sent me realize we do have to relearn servo settings. I thought that was the case. I learned a lot from you in the last eight months that I feel pretty confident with forward programming and avian set ups. I want to thank you for that.

This is one beautiful balsa plane. The $850 price tag seems a little high to me plus the cost of batteries for the average hobbyist. Yes, I know they will sell some, but there’s no way I can afford one. Guess I’ll keep flying my coffee cup Turbo Timber Evo 1.5 til it falls apart. Maybe some day the R/C gods will bless me with a plane like this! lol!! Great video Brian like always. The amount of information is priceless. Tell the camera crew great job also! Admittedly, only a few flights on her so far, as this spring has been relentless in terms of wind...we have BARELY enough time to get footage produced before we need to publish it...let alone fly for fun, like I desperately want to do.

One piece of advise in terms of safety: I NEVER program or manipulate on my planes with the prop installed! Just not worth it, seen/heard too many mishaps with live models on the bench. Would be so easy in this video, because you literally just installed it. Just leave it off until you are done! ;-) BRGDS from Switzerland

Perso j'aurais essayé avec un autre drone et un genre de grapin accroché à un systeme de larguage pour degager le drone dépaneur en cas de soucis, avec une personne au sol et le pilote à côté pour guider avec des jumelles avant les intempéries.
J'ai deja récupéré un avion RC avec un air2s, et un hélico semi-maquette avec un hubsan zino et un eméteur 5,8ghz sanglé en dessous pour avoir un vrai retour vertical, parce-que mine de rien ce vieux coucou de zino est si lourd (avec une 3s 5000mah qui depasse de 5cm derriere, ca résiste à des vents de fou et soulève un éléphant ! )
Content pour toi au final, c'est tellementt frustrant de savoir un de ses drones dans la nature, c'est nos bébés à nous les passionés!

I used to work for perryman company whom is a titanium manufacturer. The supplied ti to Lockheed Martin for the build of the sr-72....Perryman is in Washington county, PA., which is were I'm from too. O got late off when the plague hit, they called me back but wanted to send me to the plant that is 1-1/2 hour drive one way so I said no thanks. I miss working for perryman, they used to be a good company.

Brian - love your channel! Quick question - if you put floats on this Timber and fly it off of water, is there any concern for the exterior servo(s) getting wet???
I just had another question - all the foamies do this too...shouldn't be an issue, but if you're real concerned, just make a plash guard for the rear servos.
Gotta keep in mind, the servo is mostly splash shielded already, and if you get water into the electronics, you'd be already under water, and for some time - might have already been a "bad day" if that happens.
Either way I will share about this after I do floats when our pond is done :) I can't wait!!!
Great video, this helped me fully setup this aircraft having no prior knowlage of balsa planes or bnf style aircraft. The only thing I'm confused about, is it seems like every other tutorial for binding controllers involves a bind plug, and I didn't notice you using one. I also didn't need one to bind my transmitter, and I was able to get safe select working as well. Does this aircraft just have a receiver that doesn't need a bind plug or something?
We now have a push button we press to BIND. You can also use a plug, if you wish, and some other brands still use a plug. the newer Rx'es have a button.

Per my earlier suggestion, beeswax (or toilet wax ring) works great to hold screws onto screwdriver, and also works great to hold nut in the nutdriver.
A great video and thank you for the very informative detail of the ESC set up. I wanted to buy this model as I already own the 1.5M variant. However, I am so disappointed that E flite have permitted two external servo controls! They are not weather proof, will get drenched if you use floats and being a tail dragger, will collect all manner of material off a grass runway. Finally, in my view, what was a beautiful looking aircraft, has been ruined by poor design. Anyhow, thank you for you and Megan's hard work producing this material, even with a sore throat!
I understand your concerns. Two external servos at the tail might be getting a tiny bit wet, but to be honest, I guess I just haven't ever had anything come of that issue. Keep in mind, most all the foamies are the same way...BUT I guess it's not totally inconceivable that one could run into issues.
Couldn't one make a cover, similar to what the UMX planes use over the linear long throw servos??? Might that solve your concern?
Also, and to be fair...I LIKE having them out, WAY easier to service....BUT they are pretty much butt ugly. The cover would help with both issues, OR a super skilled balsa wood crafter could fairly easily move them inboard, OR at least up front, with long control rods.

Oh man that is a beautiful Timber! I don't think the price is that bad after pricing out Balsa ARFs.
Use thread locker on all metal to metal screws .. especially grub screws in collars that hold the wheels on.
That's cool so long as you're not talking about any plastic to metal contact areas, then if you REALLY want thread locker, you gotta get the thread locker on the bolts/screws and then let it dry before installing them. It's the solvent that makes it runny that will cause cracking and weakening the plastic. I've learned that lesson a few times over, and thankful it was in my earlier RC days ;)

uy that model. my only wish that it seems like you go thru the radio setup a little faster than you did with the build. i know alot of people know but that screen looks different on different radios. there are different methods to do what you accomplshed also. i had to gripe about something, but thats just me. keeep up the great work buddy
The only thing I know about lock type is it won't stick if your bolts are oily. So make sure the bolts your lock tighting are free of oil. And the whole you're putting them in is free of oil and keep lock tight away from any plastic. It will turn it to potato chips. That's what it turns into like. Crispy potato chip feeling stuff and it just yes, bricks down in the dust. Basically, it will completely destroy any plastic. It comes in contact with..
You don’t want locktight to dry or it will turn to powder when you tighten it up
If that were true, the MFG'ers wouldn't be able to apply it to bolt before shipping them in packs. Might be a slightly different formula, but my understanding (which I've proven a few times so far) is that the solvent will eat plastic.
Maybe the stuff on the bolts from the MFG'ers is PAINT and not Loctite?

My flaps out of the box were weird, ended up taking servo arms off and replacing 2 or 3 notches up or down on the splines. Like yours, the servos were bottoming out on the up position. The figures in the book are a mile out

Love the big Balsa bird. I would put inflatable s landing gear on it to quiet it down and give it a smoother ride. 50$ to 75$ price reduction would make me smile . Knowing you have an upgraded ESC and all , you have no retracts and such . Even knowing manufacturers have more labor in Balsa planes.. Don’t get me wrong I love it. Just my thoughts for a man that has more planes than he has room or brains.😂

Your video s are great and it wud be nice to see a bit more of camera crew instead of camera crews voice ! I love this SWS Timber and I own a Timber turbo 1.5 m . It looks to be a fantastic model , however I am very sceptical and not impressed that it has plastic clevis's !!! Those plastic pins are not as strong or have the longevity as metal ones ! Not keen on paying $1599 Australian ! What is your opinion on plastic clevis's? I have written off a PC -9 1500 mm wspan because of elevator plastic pin failure .I Appreciate your response

Brian, I flew my new Turbo Timber SWS 2.0 for the first time today at my AMA club. I love it! I'm new and I see it as a plane I can grow into. However, my trainer and the builder/programmer, who also love the plane, noticed that it makes a strange high pitched sound when flying. Their best guess is that there is not enough air flow out of the fuselage. I couldn't find anything in the manual that mentioned creating one, as some apparently do. Nor could we find a location meant to create one. Do you hear this when you fly it? Any ideas?
I really wish Eflight would utilize 6 and 12 pin connectors instead of separate servo connectors. The whole, "Rats Nest" of wires and connectors is so frustrating with these planes. Especially when you have to remove the wings for transport to and from the airfield.

You need to add a lot of pigment to make plastics white, which makes them weaker, so it's a good thing they left all those parts natural color.
Brian, how big of pond are you building, and do you have some kind of boat to retrieve a plane when needed? I like this plane with the canopy compared to the 1.5m Turbo! 👍😁
It will about about .8 acres, give or take. No boat... yet. :) We'll have to figure out some sort of retrieval mechanism.
Balsa is worth it. So happy to see the option even if it’s a bit pricy. It will fly so much nicer!

I work on industrial scales. Much of my work is checking and calibrating scales. Some is installing scales, while other parts had be integrating my equipment to periphery industrial equipment, such as large scale food systems, chemical plants, truck scales, railroad scales, all the way down to analytical balances in laboratory environments. For the sake of clarity, lets just say that I work HARD to take care of what people need. I have an opportunity to touch many lives, and because I take care of customers, they keep having me back...for decades. This makes it hard for my company to shed me off like a parasite ;) LOL JK, they take good care of me, and I take good care of them back. Opposite this effort, for almost two decades now, me and my wife (and family) are very frugal. We save and give routinely, and our investments have been lucrative, but some might say they're more risky than most would tolerate (which may be true for most). I don't stop...just ask my Megan. Also, don't discount the almost one decade doing this "side gig" and the fact that we operate a small farm here too, which is after all, a "first generation farm" being operated in good faith, for a profit intensive ;) (you will get it, if you farm - if you don't I can't explain it here). Basically, we're hard workers, and I drive my wife crazy with it...then we live like we don't have it, except for things that are part of our multi-pronged approach to long investments, our property being one of them. We live and run a very tax efficient lifestyle, aka, we don't waste a single opportunity to take advantage of legal way to shed tax liability as we have come up in our careers. Also, if I didn't mention it, my wife is a few credits short of a masters degree, and it makes us a TON of money (that was a hilarious joke - she was a teacher for 10 years, and she almost never made as much as I did with my Associates Degree - LOL LOL LOL - but she was and is a HARD worker).
Okay, I could go on, but don't want you to get the wrong idea. Your question is fair, and I want to answer it as well as I can, and I could and would tell you WAY more about our exact situation if I were in person with you, BUT on a public forum, I gotta keep it a bit more vague. I'm a pretty transparent type of guy, and love to help others get as far as they can get. I'm always working with my customers in this regard...some to a larger degree, and some to an almost non-existent degree, just depends on how much time we get to spend together. It's fun too, since I get to see people on somewhat regular frequencies, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, annually, and I get to see what's going on with their pursuits, and share how ours are going. I think this may play a role in why I enjoy such a good career - I care about my customers, personally and professionally, and they care about me - it can and does happen...but it's not easy.

Hey Brian l have the E-flite Viper 90mm Jet wanted to know how to setup thrust reverse on it l have the Spectrum DX8E transmitter there a Bec wire coming from the Avian 130amp ESC don't know what that for can you tell me what to do about thrust reverse

My turbo timber prop came alive with the throttle cut on while on the table in AS3X mode. I believe my Tx lost connection with it, but it almost got me. From now on prop stays off.
Should not be possible. Only way that could happen is if you have failsafe mode setup to have %throttle. That said, prop off is always a good idea.😊

We plan to do it. It'll be a super easy mod, and we already have it on our docket...but just waiting a few weeks or months to cover this part. We usually try to line this up for when we do our "Second Thoughts" but also depends on if the planes are in stock or not. We TRY not to put out a video, if planes are impossible to get...but we often fail.

Mine remain question was to confirm my thoughts that I have to relearn the servo settings as the receiver was not set with Crow. After watching that video you sent me realize we do have to relearn servo settings. I thought that was the case. I learned a lot from you in the last eight months that I feel pretty confident with forward programming and avian set ups. I want to thank you for that.

This is one beautiful balsa plane. The $850 price tag seems a little high to me plus the cost of batteries for the average hobbyist. Yes, I know they will sell some, but there’s no way I can afford one. Guess I’ll keep flying my coffee cup Turbo Timber Evo 1.5 til it falls apart. One piece of advise in terms of safety: I NEVER program or manipulate on my planes with the prop installed! Just not worth it, seen/heard too many mishaps with live models on the bench.
