I remember presenting my paper in a conference.. My presentation was the very last.. And everybody was tired so i started the presentation with a joke.. After the joke i introduced my self... Every body was like.. They were so amused and eventually started to take interest and in the end asked me a lot of questions. and after the presentation the head of the department came to me and huged me for that unusual start..
Congratulations!!! I lectured earlier this year and out of all of the torture I put myself through I made two (pretty bad) spelling errors on my slides that I missed because I was blinded in my nervousness. I felt so grateful that when I came to those slides I laughed at them and made a comment about how nervous I had been creating the presentation to prevent things like this and the room laughed with me.
I was in the BIG Lab this summer for a summer internship. I attended few talks at the Bristol Astronomical society and loved the enthusiam of the members there. It was kind of overwhelming. Those talks were one of the best memories, I brought back with me to India.
Hi, Lucy! Very nice summary of your organisation! I relate to your point about confidence with a slightly different experience: I am a high school teacher and a phd student at the same time, but for the 2nd and 3rd years of the PhD I had a sabbatical period from the high school for concentrating on the thesis whilst profiting from a scholarship program abroad. Now I'm back at my high school for only 3 classes per week, and strangely, having this time to interact with my young students really helps me so much to organise my thoughts so much better than when I was exclusively dedicated to the thesis. Research can get quite lonely, and having students with whom share variations of ones hypothesis is really helpful in forming a clear and to-the-point line of reasoning, and it does boost our confidence, which gives palpable meaning to sorting theses questions out. I really feel strongly about creating post-graduate programs more connected to high school programs - in some areas it can work wonders.
Lucy I have just shared your vlog with my doctoral peers at the University of Wolverhampton Doctoral College. Some of us will be presenting at the European Conference of Education at UCL. Thank you for the tips!
