Thanks for having a nuanced take. I felt so frustrated wrt the discourse surrounding this show back when the opening was released. Because it’s definitely the kind of show I would’ve loved as a kid, being a mexican american who didn’t know much spanish, growing up in a household with my grandparents and many of my cousins. Overall, this show is going to resonate with a lot of kids who might feel outcast because of their culture. No, it doesn’t represent peoples lived experiences in latin america, and we do need more shows that are made by people with those experiences, but that’s not what it’s trying to achieve in the first place.

THANK YOU. I and my husband were so irritated by how Primos was treated. He's Mex Am with a million different cousins and loved so much of what he saw! I think online discourse has become so performative over time that all takes must be the "morally correct" ones, that people get swept up in it to avoid being seen as an awful person. It's frustrating because it's the death of nuance, and drowns out the voices of people who truly have that lived experience.
Wonderful video and honestly editing style with your ad breaks. Subbing immediately!

As a Latina I found much of the backlash was from exclusionist Latin folks who feel like they’re the ultimate arbiters of the Latin experience and frankly some of them have a resentment to Latin folks whose families usually made the tough choice to come to America for economic opportunity and there’s debatably a classism element to it (one branch of my family lives in Mexico but they’re very rich versus my main family who came to America because they were financially struggling in Mexico and 3-5 generations later we’re still in the working class). TLDR: some Latin folks have a weird hatred for Latin Americans and they’ll look for any opportunity to yell about it

As a Mexican-American, I couldn't agree more with that last statement. Mexico alone is already home to a ton of different opinions, ideas and cultures, and adding the ever-sprawling Chicano culture (itself highly diverse and painted in just about every political ideology across the spectrum of American culture) certainty can be rather overwhelming to the average person unfamiliar with all of this.
Of course, what you get out of that can result on a powder keg of dissenting opinions and cross-cultural clashes. It all ends up being rather counterproductive and very cynical intrapersonal conflicts that just don't help anyone.

This is the direct example of "don't judge a book by it's cover” and we all fell for it, we all judged the show by immediate appearances and a rushed conclusive set of thought because everything pointed to that exact direction… but it turns out (at least for a percentage of us who gave the show an opportunity) that it was FAR from the unhinged piece of crap we predicted it to be; this story is a rather complex exemplification of how sometimes a terrible action correlated but individual to the source is viewed as directly at the helm of the creator's responsibility when it's not always on their hands (right, Myrna Velazco?).
Wether you see the show as a masterpiece, a decent project or a waste of time that's up to you, but we should all learn a lesson: misinterpretations and misinformation controlled by the masses can be powerful, and good intentions can be overturned by a simple mistake.
    We're deeply sorry, Natalia.

I'm Mex-Am, I can't speak Spanish, I lost count of how many cousins I have years ago. The fact that other Latinos/Latinas were enraged by this was jarring. This show was about the Mexican-American experiance. How growing up, you have this disconnect. Heck, my father and I both view Mexican culture through a historian's or archivist's lens as that's how we experienced it. Glad that people are finally stepping back and giving this show a better chance.

I appreciate this video and your nuanced take on the discourse surrounding Primos. I'm also black, and I've tried to respectfully explain to people that Natasha Kline just wanted to create a good children's show about her experiences growing up as a Mexican-American child in Los Angeles, California. I don't think she had any ill will or malicious intent when creating this show. But people are still choosing to believe that it's "racist" and that it's the worst show they've ever seen. The show's not a masterpiece, so I understand not liking it simply because it isn't your cup of tea. But it certainly isn't the worst DTVA cartoon ever made. It's just an average Disney Channel cartoon, nothing too special. It's evident that a considerable amount of thought and care went into creating Primos, but the backlash has tarnished its reputation.
Unlike Tater's voice actress, Natasha Kline responded to the backlash more reasonably without insulting the Latin-American language or the people criticizing the show. She was more open to making changes as long as she could keep what was essential to her story.
She changed the town's name, changed Cookita's name to Lucita, and made it more obvious the show is in LA, not Mexico. But she wanted to keep what was integral to her story. I haven't heard anyone else bring this up, so I will. I genuinely feel sorry for Natasha Kline and the creatives involved. She didn't deserve to have her first project ripped to shreds before it even came out. I've heard she's even been receiving death threats, which is both insane and completely unacceptable.
I've heard people say that the backlash likely would have died down after a couple of days if Myrna Velasco hadn't said anything or if she had responded more rationally to the criticism by clarifying that the reason for the broken Spanish was because Tater is a "no sabo" kid. But I've also heard people say that even before she made her response, the intro was already receiving a lot of hate. It was just her comments that ended up fueling the fire.
In conclusion, I hope this entire experience doesn't discourage future creators from wanting to tell their stories. I wish people, especially Latinos, would look past the controversy and stop treating this show like it's an abomination. Attacking this random kid's cartoon won't solve anything and will only cause more injustice and infighting. Hopefully, the show will gain a bigger audience and find its footing as it continues.

Not something I'll go out of my way to watch, hype, discuss, or deconstruct, but something I'll be perfectly content to watch if I happen to catch it on TV. I do think my favorite character is the Vision Tiger, followed by ChaCha.
Also, this is admittedly my "hammer," but I was trying to decide if Tater was a lil' bit ADHD, or just imaginative and impulsive in the standard way.
Also, also, I need more "Romancimorphs" worldbuilding. You can't just hint at a teen romance series that seemingly involves a sexy anthro capybara and then leave me hangin'.

I havent seen the show yet, nor examined every concern people had with the show, but my grandma was essentially a "no sabo kid" my dad is even more removed and I'm reclaiming my Mexican and Spanish heritage.
I dont look "mexican" and have been told that my whole life, my sister is a ginger and people would use that to "prove" that I CANT be Mexican.
While as an adult I understand that I'm not Mexican because I haven't participated in that culture, those kids who bullied me weren't thinking about Mexican culture, they were thinking about how I LOOKED.
Also as an adult I've learned how many gingers are in Mexico, and how Black slaves escaped to Mexico from the US, and how the Chinese would immigrate into Mexico and THEN cross the boarder to work on the transcontinential railroad.
Mexico is a HUGE, beautiful, diverse, amalgamation of people from all ethnicities.
I love seeing that represented. I LOVE seeing a main character who can't speak Spanish (well.)
I can understand if people were upset by XYZ things they saw in the theme song or show, but to bully the show and say they're trying to pass this ONE stereotype of Mexicans just seems unsupported.
But also, we have to KEEP making Latino shows if we want full Latino representation.
I dont remember people being pissed off about Mucha Lucha or El Tigre. And I'm pretty sure I finished listing every Latin centric show I grew up with. Oh. Dora the Explorer.
Like, we need more shows to give us variety and representation. Again, Mexico ALONE is a huge and diverse country, and that's not even incorporating South America. A singular kids cartoon is never going to be good enough representation of EVERY Latino/Chicano/Hispanic person.
But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try, because then all your representation is going to be El Luchador.
I'd rather my kids watch Primos than Nacho Libre.
And if I want my kids to have a real diverse perspective of ANY culture, I'm not going to depend on mainstream cartoons to provide that. I'm going to access Mexican media for them.
I'm not trying to invalidate anyone's objections to the show, I'm just trying to include some nuance to why it's so difficult to make an "accurate" representation. Instead, you should be focusing on authentic, respectful, and diverse representation/s/.

    • @teentitansrock88
      @teentitansrock88 Місяць тому +2

Also, I 100% had a Mexican friend who was only called Nacho. I dont know why, he was introduced to me like that, I never learned his real name.
Like... it sounds SUPER offensive but....sometimes stereotypes are built from a kernel of 'truth.' The 'truths' become warped and exaggerated and over generalized to represent an entire group of people when they become a stereotype and THATS wrong.
It's wrong to apply stereotypes to people, it's not wrong to 'be' a 'stereotype.'
Obviously I'm NOT saying that "stereotypes are okay because they're true."
But assuming something has ill intentions just because it aligns with a stereotype is taking the easy way out rather than dissecting the situation.
Think about how it comes across to culture-police someone about their own culture.

One of the (many) things I hate about situations like this is that the people parading the hate seem like the expect 100% “perfect” (whatever that’s meant to mean) representation of what ever culture is being presented. And that anything that doesn’t fit into their “perfect” standard is “cultural appropriation” or it’s “racist”. Nothing is perfect and there WILL be some mistakes along the way. But the way people responded to the mistakes was also completely wrong. Responding with hate, vitriol, and spite, even if coming from a well-meaning place, will only bring more hate into the discussion instead of solving it. Which we saw when the VA “responded” to the hate.

Alright, I will admit that I did join the hate train for this show. I ended up making this one Family Guy meme comparing Primos to the likes of El Tigre. I like to think that I'm better than "the Twitter manchildren" but I am guilty of joining hate trains, following bandwagons, and falling for ragebait. This behavior is not only stupid but also quite harmful. There's this idea that every piece of media focused on a specific group has to represent every single member of that group, and if it doesn't, then the show is evil and bigoted and the creators are -ist/-phobic. Just look at what happened with Q-Force, another show with a lot of backlash and I was guilty of joining the hate train for it. It got backlash for being stereotypical even though the creators were gay men. The initial trailer really did it dirty. And it's not lost on me that the character who got shat on the most was the feminine gay guy - they're basically the punching bags of the LGBTQ+ community at this point and frankly that's just sad.

This show is criminally underrated & I like it (far more than The Loud House/The Casagrandes, for example!), so for me - forget the haters. The controversy isn't gonna allow this show too last long (as much as it should last 2-3 seasons minimim, IMHO!) tho, honestly & unfortunately enough.

I might get accused of Ripping off Loud House even though this idea is based on my childhood." I think more professionals should be watching the other cartoons that are out to keep up with the competition. I've seen interviews with some that say they don't watch many newer cartoons.

You do realize that "Cuquita" is an actual nickname found in Mexico, right? The wife of popular singer Vicentes Fernadez was often referred to as "Dona Cuquita."
By that logic, no one called Richard can be referred to as "Dick" anymore because "Dick" is also the informal way to reference the male's reproduction organ.
