    I watched it. It's decent. The hate surrounding it was definitely blown out of proportion, but Tater's VA's approach on the matter didn’t help, though I'm glad they fixed some of the issues while keeping how they wanted the show to be. Maybe if people ACTUALLY GAVE THE SHOW A CHANCE AND WATCHED IT, then their opinions wouldn't just be hate-based. Also, the character designs are fine. I don't see why they're "ugly."

    11:28 I can actually help with this since international dubs of TV shows I'm familiar with is a curiosity of mine: The non-English dubs for Phineas & Ferb are pretty decent, seemingly serving a same-level purpose for the 2010s the same way Kim Possible did on all the Disney Channels during the 2000s. Though there was some trouble with making an equivalent acroynm for OWCA- Organization Without a Cool Acronym (You can check the TV Tropes page "Inconsistent Dub" for the more info). The most interesting fact is that the Dutch dub relocates the setting to the Netherlands; the Tri-State Area became the Region, and there were references to Dutch cities added. Weirdly enough, this is actually pretty common in a number of Dutch dubs for kids' shows (Medabots, Rugrats, The REal Ghostbusters). They stopped doing this after the first 2 seasons, though. There's also an issue with certain voice actors passing away, despite the show getting more episodes. Polish fans mourned when Wojciech Paszkowski, their voice actor for Dr. Doofenshmirtz and Mike Wazowski, passed away this past August at the age of 61. Now onto SpongeBob: most people forget this show was a surprise hit when it came out in 1999, so most countries didn't get their dubs until the mid-2000s. And while it's pretty popular in Asia and Latin America, SpongeBob has had a rough time all across Europe. That isn't to say people don't like it, but thanks to the quality of certain dubs, they just don't have the same "OMPH" the show does here. In France, Spongebob is renamed "Bob the Sponge", and the broadcaster TF1 takes out most of the racy dialogue and parental bonus jokes, as well as cutting out all the live-action segments. In Norway, they actually had to REDUB the whole show six years after the 1st dub debuted after parents complained to the NRK that SpongeBob's voice was annoying. And let's not get started on the edits Mediaset does to the show in Italy. (x.com/OutOfContxtDubs/status/1772065493274214507 ) There is exactly ONE place in Europe where SpongeBob has the same popularity and admiration that he does in the United States, if not more, and that's Germany. It's easy to see why There are a lot of neat jokes they added in (Mr. Krabs does a reference to another character the voice actor voices) or redone to fit the dub (In one episode, Squidward pretends to be a family of Germans living in SpongeBob's house. The German dub changes it so that he pretends to be Bavarian instead). It's aired not just on Nickelodeon there, but has had full marathons on Comedy Central and MTV (look up the promos). The most cool part is the series of albums where the voice actors sing parody covers of popular songs in the country (check the channel MusikSpongeBob or the website spongebob-musik.de for more). Even popular German singers and musicians (such as Markus Becker, MC Fitti, and Roland Kaiser) are heard singing alongside SpongeBob on the albums.

    Is this really what media literacy is? Maybe I'm just stupid, but I really don't understand why people are mad about people having discussions about the poor parenting displayed in the Horrid Henry show. I always understood it as the Horrid Henry in the books and the Horrid Henry in the show are very different characters. The Horrid Henry in the books in truly horrid, and typically deserves the punishments he gets or doesn't even get punished at all. But in the show, they tone a lot of Henry's actions down, especially as the series progresses, and when comparing direct scenes from the book and the show, Henry is often punished the same amount as in the books while doing a lot less to justify these reactions. I also understand that cherry-picking scenes like that is bad and clearly doesn't reflect on the show as a whole as there are many scenes where his parents do express care for him, it just comes across as them having strange mood swings instead of having justified reactions that then lead into them calming down. I think that the books and the show should be viewed as completely separate media that just happens to share the same premise and name. Personally, I'm not really a fan of the show, it's honestly just a depressing slog to try to push through. In the beginning, I actually did understand where the parents were coming from, but as the series progresses, it just becomes the parents being angry with Henry for no reason. I know that a lot of people have said that it's just a cartoon, and to not take things so seriously, but the thing that truly makes Horrid Henry such a sad show for me is to imagine all the scenarios in it happening in real life. Depressing from every angle, from the content of the show, to the original creator hating it, to the creator of the show supporting ai. Anyway, sorry for the rant, but I sort of felt like I was going crazy reading all these comments and watching this video.

    • @DelhiWacky
      @DelhiWacky 18 днів тому

      In short, yes. In long, the fact that you as a person who doesn’t care much for the show and may only have limited experience with the franchise is demonstrating more media literacy than people who became full throated fans over months or years is wild to me. The simple things like separating the books and tv series/movie or contending w/ the parents’ relationship w/ their kids honestly or why certain characters were included needed to be a much bigger conversation than it seemed to be. In the original version of this video, there is a clip utilized interviewing the creator of the books that encapsulates why the *book’s world is set up the way it is; it was passed around on Twitter and eventually weaponized as a gotcha against people who had a perspective on the show that was ironically closer to her mindset on the characters. It’s the centerpiece of the video, one of the main factors that pushed me into making this. People can enjoy media however they want but it felt wrong that headcanons were trumping the text w/o the proper context at hand.

    I appreciate this video and your nuanced take on the discourse surrounding Primos. I'm also black, and I've tried to respectfully explain to people that Natasha Kline just wanted to create a good children's show about her experiences growing up as a Mexican-American child in Los Angeles, California. I don't think she had any ill will or malicious intent when creating this show. But people are still choosing to believe that it's "racist" and that it's the worst show they've ever seen. The show's not a masterpiece, so I understand not liking it simply because it isn't your cup of tea. But it certainly isn't the worst DTVA cartoon ever made. It's just an average Disney Channel cartoon, nothing too special. It's evident that a considerable amount of thought and care went into creating Primos, but the backlash has tarnished its reputation. Unlike Tater's voice actress, Natasha Kline responded to the backlash more reasonably without insulting the Latin-American language or the people criticizing the show. She was more open to making changes as long as she could keep what was essential to her story. She changed the town's name, changed Cookita's name to Lucita, and made it more obvious the show is in LA, not Mexico. But she wanted to keep what was integral to her story. I haven't heard anyone else bring this up, so I will. I genuinely feel sorry for Natasha Kline and the creatives involved. She didn't deserve to have her first project ripped to shreds before it even came out. I've heard she's even been receiving death threats, which is both insane and completely unacceptable. I've heard people say that the backlash likely would have died down after a couple of days if Myrna Velasco hadn't said anything or if she had responded more rationally to the criticism by clarifying that the reason for the broken Spanish was because Tater is a "no sabo" kid. But I've also heard people say that even before she made her response, the intro was already receiving a lot of hate. It was just her comments that ended up fueling the fire. In conclusion, I hope this entire experience doesn't discourage future creators from wanting to tell their stories. I wish people, especially Latinos, would look past the controversy and stop treating this show like it's an abomination. Attacking this random kid's cartoon won't solve anything and will only cause more injustice and infighting. Hopefully, the show will gain a bigger audience and find its footing as it continues.

    I havent seen the show yet, nor examined every concern people had with the show, but my grandma was essentially a "no sabo kid" my dad is even more removed and I'm reclaiming my Mexican and Spanish heritage. I dont look "mexican" and have been told that my whole life, my sister is a ginger and people would use that to "prove" that I CANT be Mexican. While as an adult I understand that I'm not Mexican because I haven't participated in that culture, those kids who bullied me weren't thinking about Mexican culture, they were thinking about how I LOOKED. Also as an adult I've learned how many gingers are in Mexico, and how Black slaves escaped to Mexico from the US, and how the Chinese would immigrate into Mexico and THEN cross the boarder to work on the transcontinential railroad. Mexico is a HUGE, beautiful, diverse, amalgamation of people from all ethnicities. I love seeing that represented. I LOVE seeing a main character who can't speak Spanish (well.) I can understand if people were upset by XYZ things they saw in the theme song or show, but to bully the show and say they're trying to pass this ONE stereotype of Mexicans just seems unsupported. But also, we have to KEEP making Latino shows if we want full Latino representation. I dont remember people being pissed off about Mucha Lucha or El Tigre. And I'm pretty sure I finished listing every Latin centric show I grew up with. Oh. Dora the Explorer. Like, we need more shows to give us variety and representation. Again, Mexico ALONE is a huge and diverse country, and that's not even incorporating South America. A singular kids cartoon is never going to be good enough representation of EVERY Latino/Chicano/Hispanic person. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try, because then all your representation is going to be El Luchador. I'd rather my kids watch Primos than Nacho Libre. And if I want my kids to have a real diverse perspective of ANY culture, I'm not going to depend on mainstream cartoons to provide that. I'm going to access Mexican media for them. I'm not trying to invalidate anyone's objections to the show, I'm just trying to include some nuance to why it's so difficult to make an "accurate" representation. Instead, you should be focusing on authentic, respectful, and diverse representation/s/.

    • @teentitansrock88
      @teentitansrock88 Місяць тому

      Also, I 100% had a Mexican friend who was only called Nacho. I dont know why, he was introduced to me like that, I never learned his real name. Like... it sounds SUPER offensive but....sometimes stereotypes are built from a kernel of 'truth.' The 'truths' become warped and exaggerated and over generalized to represent an entire group of people when they become a stereotype and THATS wrong. It's wrong to apply stereotypes to people, it's not wrong to 'be' a 'stereotype.' Obviously I'm NOT saying that "stereotypes are okay because they're true." But assuming something has ill intentions just because it aligns with a stereotype is taking the easy way out rather than dissecting the situation. Think about how it comes across to culture-police someone about their own culture.

    About a month before I watched this video, I saw this segment Lion Forge Animation did for the "Coming Together" campaign Sesame Street was doing back in late 2020. (ua-cam.com/video/XopxsSdecbc/v-deo.html ) If you can't access it, basically it's a anti-racist short fighting against prejudice. Summary: Some black kid wants to play superhero with his friends until some white kid tells him "superheroes are white" and that he can't play. The black kid cries for a bit until he has the realization that he could be a superhero anyway, no matter what any of his colleagues think. At the time, I thought "pretty on the nose, but I guess kids have to learn this somehow". This video of yours made me realize that if this was a segment during the original run of Sesame Street, they'd just have an animated segment with a black kid superhero, no questions asked. Basically Delhi, I think you're too hard on yourself when it comes to making these vids, because I thought was a pretty thorough exploration (so much so I stalled my comment 3 weeks after this had come out due to not being as in-depth as I wanted to be here😓). When you showed who was likely responsible for the change in Sesame Street's aesthetic, I laughed my ass off. (Fun fact from a mutual of mine: Incidentally they named an actual NYC street Sesame Street which is nice, but it’s at 63rd and Broadway right in front of Lincoln Center; even back in the 70s that was considered "Billionaire Blvd". Anyone living there would’ve called the cops on Oscar the Grouch😆) #JusticeForRooseveltFranklin✊🏽

    One of the (many) things I hate about situations like this is that the people parading the hate seem like the expect 100% “perfect” (whatever that’s meant to mean) representation of what ever culture is being presented. And that anything that doesn’t fit into their “perfect” standard is “cultural appropriation” or it’s “racist”. Nothing is perfect and there WILL be some mistakes along the way. But the way people responded to the mistakes was also completely wrong. Responding with hate, vitriol, and spite, even if coming from a well-meaning place, will only bring more hate into the discussion instead of solving it. Which we saw when the VA “responded” to the hate.

      @@shakurburton9358 Every time I have tried to watch Craig of the Creek I have been bored out of my mind. It is far too schmaltzy. It is one of the few CN shows I can't sit through. Recess is a much better show. In that show the kids are a little bit like mini adults and it has a bit more of a saterical edge. Also its just funnier.

      @@shakurburton9358 Don't they sometimes go to school in Craig of the Creek? Also, you rarely see them in class in Kagya-Sama since it is focused on their relationships and School President activities.

    What you say at the end of Part 3 - that's how & why Moon Girl ain't getting a season 3, for example. Same as how & why Young Love - another show I like, Aint ever gettin' a Season 2.

    This show is criminally underrated & I like it (far more than The Loud House/The Casagrandes, for example!), so for me - forget the haters. The controversy isn't gonna allow this show too last long (as much as it should last 2-3 seasons minimim, IMHO!) tho, honestly & unfortunately enough.

    Primos United Both Of the Us brands of right wing in Hatred,Liberals,and Theocrats. Please do not break the alliance. I’m still going to watch the show but I need someone to apoligize for Vagina being the name of the baby.

      You do realize that "Cuquita" is an actual nickname found in Mexico, right? The wife of popular singer Vicentes Fernadez was often referred to as "Dona Cuquita." By that logic, no one called Richard can be referred to as "Dick" anymore because "Dick" is also the informal way to reference the male's reproduction organ.

    Thank you for making this video Delhi. Af first i was one of those people who sided with the angry mob when the theme song came out but over time I the backlash felt harsh. Im not Mexican nor do i live in LA but who am i to judge someone telling thier story. Plus in the show thier are relatble things im from a Caribbean household and grew up with my cousins. Despite not being the best I will give it some slack.

    I didnt realize there was any kind of rivalry between these two, I dont know which one I'd say is "better"- but I would say that I have a lot more fun watching Spongebob over Phineas and Ferb. Nastolgia might be a huge reason for that, when I was a kid we didnt have cabel and the only show we had on dvd was the first two seasons of Spongebob, so I'd watch that on repeat FOR YEARS- Spongebob just means so much more to me personaly. Phineas and Ferb is great though!

    Man, Bookworm Bunch was my jam as a kid. I remember Seven Little Monsters and Berenstain Bears being my absolute faves, with George Shrinks and Corduroy coming in as my third and fourth faves. Sure as heck I bought those Berenstain Bears DVDs when they released in the (mid/late) 2000’s and I remember falling asleep while watching them at night because of how calming the aesthetic of the show was. Seven Little Monsters had more of an impact because of how “out of left field” the show was and I absolutely adored every character and the chaos that was birthed by putting them in a single setting lol as well as those little ear worm songs they’d sing. Seven was, and still is (and always will be), my favorite. All the episodes are on youtube!
