Here in upstate NY, I wintered my 2 avocado trees on our enclosed porch, enclosed but not heated. They did surprisingly well but the edges of all the leaves browned. I've transplanted them and they're back in the sunshine now that it's spring but since they're over 3' tall and every leaf has brown edges (looking ugly), and since I've never pruned them, I think it's time to do so... . There's LOTS of new growth at the tops so I feel bad because the trees money-makers are going to be those new leaves, but I think they really need pruning and I'm hoping that they'll redirect their energy to sprouting/branching out. It's the right time of the year here, so I'm hopeful! Thanks for the simple advice! Wish me luck!

My avocado needs help. It's about 60cm talk and just sprouting leaves at the very top of the plant. It suffered from root rot a while ago too. I think it needs to be trimmed down but there's no leaves at the lower part of the stalk. How can i cut it down?

Hi there, I trepidly pruned my plant a few months ago in the way you eloquently instructed, all good as a new stem began to grow out from the node just below the cut point. After a week or so it stopped growing reaching about 2 cm but still looks lush, then from the following node below a new stem started to grow! This secondary stem has grown to about 6 inches & has 5 lovely leaves on it plus a few baby ones just below. If you could guide me on this one, the leaf that I originally cut above is hanging on looking 85% good, should I manually remove it as it may be making the overall photosynthesising of the plant inefficient? One other thing please, should I reprune the plant once the new stem reaches the same height as in the original process you described? Eagerly looking forward to your reply, thanks.
Thanks to you and your video my now-pruned baby avocado is growing well! I did as you said, and it was scary cutting a perfectly good top but now just 3 weeks later it’s growing like the mythological hydra with multiple branches from the one removed branch.
Thank you this is so clear! My avocado tree has a lot of leaves at the top and has a thin trunk. Will pruning help me fix it? It is now leaning to one side so I had to prop it with a stick. I used to just pinch the top leaves off but then stopped.

Anika your plant sounds like mine. It's April 3, 2022, early spring. My avocado is 36" tall with leaves that are kind of floppy. I bit the bullet, grabbed my scissors, held my breath and SNIP! I did it. Should have done it a while ago. I have three more seeds sitting in small water jars on the window sill behind this tall one. I won't repeat the mistake I made, but prune these new ones before they reach 36" tall on a skinny stem. Good luck with yours.

I have a tree I grew from a pit and unfortunately it's three years old with no pruning so it looks like those tall thin trees you describe. I saw another commenter had the same issue. I'll go ahead and try to prune it in a few months when it's warmer. I live in a colder weather climate so I have to bring it indoors in a big pot on wheels every winter lol!

Hi Scott. I'm from Melbourne USA. I love growing avocado trees. I also prune them to help them branch out. I'm finding that because of the pandemic more people are wanting to grow beneficial gardens and fruit trees. Back in my grandmother's day they were called Victory Gardens. I know it takes a long time to produce actual Avocado fruits on a tree grown from a tree. Perhaps you have a trick or two. I have one in the ground that I've grown for 5 years now. It's healthy but not producing as of yet.
A node is an area where a new branch or leaf can grow from. Just above each leaf there is a little bump, which is where a new branch will develop if the conditions are right.
Wish I could post a photo on here... But my tree never pruned is branching and has beautiful leaf growth so I am wondering if just letting nature take its course works just as well... If not better... Mine is 2 years old now and very strong ... I have a younger one I'm going to do as you advise too to see the difference... Intrigued!

I have a high avocado tree, with a thick trunk. But right now it has lost all leaves 😢 Probably because of the less light this winter (Dark in Denmark!). I will change the soil, and mix it with perlite, now that spring is around the corner. But can I cut it down now? Is it possible to keep it alive, with no leaves? My avocado tree has grown to about 18 inches tall with about 6 big leaves at the top. I just replanted it into a larger plot and we are headed into Spring time. I did not realize I needed to cut the tree at 6 inches. Should I cut it now? If so would I cut it back to 6 inches or cut at the top there are nodes top to bottom? Very informative videos, thank you!
So how do you make it branch out? ive got a really good growing tree which is about a meter now tall and i want to cut it down to half, because it has no branches. It's trying to branch out, but its at the very top. So how do i do it? do i not cut it as close to a leaf? I was waiting for that explanation but it didn't come. And should i cut it on an angle or straight?
Does the tree need to be a minimum size for pruning to be effective, mines only about 10cm right now but hasn’t grown at all in months so I’m thinking now would be a good time to give it a chop??
Avocado trees are very sensitive to sodium. There might be traces of salt in the water you are using. Even if you cannot taste it there could be enough sodium to harm the plant. Try adding Gypsum to your soil or using distilled water, hope this helps.
Do you cover the exposed stem with something after you prune it. I find when i prune the stem starts dying back ALOT well past the node and the dieback wont stop
Is it ever too late to prune an avocadotree?? I’ve heard that the avocados are more vulnerable to pruning than other trees, and that there is a limit on how often and how much of the branches and stam you can prune? My tree is over 170 cm high but the stam is slender and need support. How much can I cut?
Great question, Rafel! I haven't made many attempts at propagating avocado stems - but I don't see why you couldn't. I'd love to know if you can get one to root!
If I wanted it shorter than the first leaf, can I cut it under the leaf? Effectively it would gave no leaves. Or would I cut above and wait for side shoots, then cut lower?
My indoor tree is way too tall and the leaves start way too high. Can I cut the stem below all leaves to make it shorter? Will the leaves start growing again? It’s still a young tree,I started growing from the seed a few months ago.

Can you propagate the cutting? I let one avocado tree go in the yard this summer and now it’s just one inv stalk, even tho I did prune it really early on. So I want to prune it again, but it’s SO HARD to cut off lovely leaves
I grew my avadado tree from a seed. it's a pretty decent height but I'm wondering if I'm able to still prune it while it's young during the summer as obviously, I've left it a little late into the season. I didnt realise you needed to prune them. (first year grower)

I need to make a video on this topic because I get this question often - once you've given it its first prune, I'd leave it alone - at least until it requires pruning to maintain and shape (which won't be for quite a few years!).
That was very helpfull video Scott! I have the same problem with my avocando tree which is the first one that succesfully planted it! It is one year old and 55cm tall and has only one branch. From which height I should proune it now please? The branch is growing from the 15cm of the plant. I am quit hesitated to proune it as it my first but I can see that it needs some help. Thank you!
Thanks Scott. I live in the UK and have grown an avocado plant from seed. I don't think for a minute I'll get any fruit anytime but it's more for aesthetic purposes. It's probably a couple of years old now with lots of healthy folliage and not spindly. It's got 2 substantial lateral. "branches" coming from it halfway up. What am I meant to do with these lateral branches, if anything? Should I cut them off, cut part of them off or leave them? The whole plant is over a couple of feet tall. Each lateral branch is 12 inches long with plenty of leaves. I've invested a lot of time in this plant and don't want to mess it up with under/over pruning. I have virtually no gardening experience. I pruned my avocado just above the two bottom leaves at a 45 degree angle. The regrowth is beautiful but it’s growing at a 90 degree angle now 😕. Any advice? 🙏
Good question! The wood of the tree needs to mature in order for it to bear fruit. From seed... this could take upwards of 7 years. If you graft on a piece of mature wood from another tree, this can bring the number of years down :)
can you reproduce the plant with the piece you chopped off? I've seen it with basil where they put the chopped stem on water and it grows roots but not sure if it will work with avocado too
I accidentally grew an avocado tree from compost. Long story short, I had no idea how to take care of it. Somehow it barely survived winter with me. I found your channel and I’m grateful for these useful tips!!! Here’s my situation: after keeping my tree indoors over winter, i have about 4 leaves left at the top, except for the new growth that has started. My tree is extremely leggy because of this. I see my tree is now trying to throw off a new shoot at the base. Should I keep the main truck and cut back at a node even without having leaves and cut the runt? Or should I give up on the truck and hope the new shoot gives it second life? I’m assuming trying to keep the the runt shoot is wrong based on a prior video I watched 😅 I just don’t know how the plant will do once I cut away it’s only leaves… someone help please😊

Hi there! We had our forty year avocado old tree blown over from hurricane Ian. We had a tree guy help us and he cut back all the limbs, 3/4 of the tree, no leaves left then gently pulled up and staked with lots of additional soil put in roots. Do you think it will have growth with out any leaves left? I’m worried! Thank you!
I’ve found, keeping trees indoors - it doesn’t matter toooooo much when you prune - but for best results, it’s best to wait until late winter/early spring :)
This is a great question. I have a number of polyembryonic seeds too (when there are more than one embryos in the seed, which will result in more than one tree). And I'm actually not yet sure what to do with multiple trunks. I haven't found a lot of info online so I'm trying different things at the moment. One day I'll make a video on it - stay tuned.
I grew two green avocado plants. What you just did will it still provide avocados. I have two pots. I plant a green avocado plant & it grew two branches. I'm scared to to that there as tall as your but a pinch taller. There also growing more leaves on top. Is there another way to prune the little tree
you have an advantage since it already has two branches from the start, you don’t have to cut the stem then, just pinch off leaves to activate new growth every once in a while, prune right before Spring season.

My tree leaves dried because of the heater so i cut the leaves off. Now the steam is very tall and just a few leaves on the top. I think pruning it will be the best solution but is it ok to prune it lower than where the leaves are?
Hey there! You can prune at a node below where the leaves are - so long as your tree is healthy (not dying of root rot or something similar) it’ll put the growth out of a lower node :)

I have grown an avocado tree from its pit. It is about 20 months old and it is HUGE. The largest leaves are about 16-18" long and 4-5" wide. I have pruned it a couple of times and it has branched out beautifully. Problem ? Room. It has taken up so much space that there is no where for it to keep growing. (indoors, Vancouver, Canada) Would cutting / pruning it way back kill it? I wish I could send you a photo of it, but I'm not sure how to do that. It is in a 12" ceramic pot that is only about 8" deep. Instead of pruning it back, should I repot it to a slightly larger floor-pot ? Right now it is in my bedroom ... on a dresser. Help! Markie

How old should the avocado tree be when pruning? My tree is young. It Got out of the seed about 40 days ago, and now its about 35 cm tall. Todat I moved it to a larger pot.
Good question, Chris! I’d say now - BUT, give it another month to let it settle into its new pot. Transplanting is a stressful event for plants and it needs time to settle. Pruning is also a stressful event: basically, when a tree is pruned, it goes into crisis mode - using a bunch of energy into new growth. Right now, your tree needs to put that growth into its roots. In a months time, once it’s settled, I’d be comfortable pruning :) good luck!

Will this work if your tree is like 6 ft tall? We inherited an avocado tree and it actually looks like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. It literally has three branches and is over 6 ft tall.
Never pruned my avocado tree. In 4 years its now 2m high in a vase. The right ambient is more important than pruning. I work as an arborist/tree surgeon, and learned that not pruning is the best pruning if a plant is healthy!

In the video you said you wanted this to grow to be a taller tree, would you prune it differently if you wanted it to be shorter and bushier?
It will continue to grow out of the node, so it can still grow tall, if I wanted it to bush out more I would prune more regularly ☺️

I'm finding that because of the pandemic more people are wanting to grow beneficial gardens and fruit trees. Back in my grandmother's day they were called Victory Gardens. I know it takes a long time to produce actual Avocado fruits on a tree grown from a tree. Perhaps you have a trick or two. I have one in the ground that I've grown for 5 years now. It's healthy but not producing as of yet.

I'm still fairly new to avocado trees and gardening, what exactly is a tree node and how do I know it's the proper area instead of further up ?
A node is an area where a new branch or leaf can grow from. Just above each leaf there is a little bump, which is where a new branch will develop if the conditions are right.
Wish I could post a photo on here... But my tree never pruned is branching and has beautiful leaf growth so I am wondering if just letting nature take its course works just as well... If not better... Mine is 2 years old now and very strong ... I have a younger one I'm going to do as you advise too to see the difference... Intrigued!

I have a high avocado tree, with a thick trunk. But right now it has lost all leaves 😢 Probably because of the less light this winter (Dark in Denmark!).
I will change the soil, and mix it with perlite, now that spring is around the corner.
But can I cut it down now? Is it possible to keep it alive, with no leaves?
The top is bad, so that's why I will try pruning.
And to provoke it to make leaves ... 🤔

My avocado tree has grown to about 18 inches tall with about 6 big leaves at the top. I just replanted it into a larger plot and we are headed into Spring time. I did not realize I needed to cut the tree at 6 inches. Should I cut it now? If so would I cut it back to 6 inches or cut at the top there are nodes top to bottom? Very informative videos, thank you!
So how do you make it branch out? ive got a really good growing tree which is about a meter now tall and i want to cut it down to half, because it has no branches. It's trying to branch out, but its at the very top. So how do i do it? do i not cut it as close to a leaf? I was waiting for that explanation but it didn't come. And should i cut it on an angle or straight?
Does the tree need to be a minimum size for pruning to be effective, mines only about 10cm right now but hasn’t grown at all in months so I’m thinking now would be a good time to give it a chop??

There could be a number of reasons. Send me a picture of your tree on Instagram and we'll see what we can do :)
Avocado trees are very sensitive to sodium. There might be traces of salt in the water you are using. Even if you cannot taste it there could be enough sodium to harm the plant. Try adding Gypsum to your soil or using distilled water, hope this helps.
Do you cover the exposed stem with something after you prune it. I find when i prune the stem starts dying back ALOT well past the node and the dieback wont stop
Is it ever too late to prune an avocadotree?? I’ve heard that the avocados are more vulnerable to pruning than other trees, and that there is a limit on how often and how much of the branches and stam you can prune? My tree is over 170 cm high but the stam is slender and need support. How much can I cut?

replanting the top part of the prune, sticking the bottom part of it in an aloe vera and burrying it, does it really grow back though as propagation?

If I wanted it shorter than the first leaf, can I cut it under the leaf? Effectively it would gave no leaves. Or would I cut above and wait for side shoots, then cut lower?
My indoor tree is way too tall and the leaves start way too high. Can I cut the stem below all leaves to make it shorter? Will the leaves start growing again? It’s still a young tree,I started growing from the seed a few months ago.

Question! How often should I cut back my avocado tree? It’s been a year since I cut mine back, and at first it did well, but now I’m wondering if it needs another trim.
I need to make a video on this topic because I get this question often - once you've given it its first prune, I'd leave it alone - at least until it requires pruning to maintain and shape (which won't be for quite a few years!).

From which height I should proune it now please? The branch is growing from the 15cm of the plant. I am quit hesitated to proune it as it my first but I can see that it needs some help. Thank you!

Thanks Scott. I live in the UK and have grown an avocado plant from seed. I don't think for a minute I'll get any fruit anytime but it's more for aesthetic purposes. It's probably a couple of years old now with lots of healthy folliage and not spindly. It's got 2 substantial lateral. "branches" coming from it halfway up. What am I meant to do with these lateral branches, if anything? Should I cut them off, cut part of them off or leave them? The whole plant is over a couple of feet tall. Each lateral branch is 12 inches long with plenty of leaves. I've invested a lot of time in this plant and don't want to mess it up with under/over pruning. I have virtually no gardening experience. I pruned my avocado just above the two bottom leaves at a 45 degree angle. The regrowth is beautiful but it’s growing at a 90 degree angle now 😕. Any advice? 🙏

Good question! The wood of the tree needs to mature in order for it to bear fruit. From seed... this could take upwards of 7 years. If you graft on a piece of mature wood from another tree, this can bring the number of years down :)

can you reproduce the plant with the piece you chopped off? I've seen it with basil where they put the chopped stem on water and it grows roots but not sure if it will work with avocado too

I accidentally grew an avocado tree from compost. Long story short, I had no idea how to take care of it. Somehow it barely survived winter with me. I found your channel and I’m grateful for these useful tips!!! Here’s my situation: after keeping my tree indoors over winter, i have about 4 leaves left at the top, except for the new growth that has started. My tree is extremely leggy because of this. I see my tree is now trying to throw off a new shoot at the base. Should I keep the main truck and cut back at a node even without having leaves and cut the runt? Or should I give up on the truck and hope the new shoot gives it second life? I’m assuming trying to keep the the runt shoot is wrong based on a prior video I watched 😅 I just don’t know how the plant will do once I cut away it’s only leaves… someone help please😊

Hi there! We had our forty year avocado old tree blown over from hurricane Ian. We had a tree guy help us and he cut back all the limbs, 3/4 of the tree, no leaves left then gently pulled up and staked with lots of additional soil put in roots. Do you think it will have growth with out any leaves left? I’m worried! Thank you!

I’ve found, keeping trees indoors - it doesn’t matter toooooo much when you prune - but for best results, it’s best to wait until late winter/early spring :)

This is a great question. I have a number of polyembryonic seeds too (when there are more than one embryos in the seed, which will result in more than one tree). And I'm actually not yet sure what to do with multiple trunks. I haven't found a lot of info online so I'm trying different things at the moment. One day I'll make a video on it - stay tuned.

I grew two green avocado plants. What you just did will it still provide avocados. I have two pots. I plant a green avocado plant & it grew two branches. I'm scared to to that there as tall as your but a pinch taller. There also growing more leaves on top. Is there another way to prune the little tree
you have an advantage since it already has two branches from the start, you don’t have to cut the stem then, just pinch off leaves to activate new growth every once in a while, prune right before Spring season.

I do have a question/concern: I have an avocado tree that was about 6in (recommended height for first pruning per my research) and I cut it back to 3in per research recommendations. Now it stopped growing. I'm not seeing any leaf or root growth and there's also no root rot that I can see. What do I do to keep it growing and alive? Any thoughts on why it's growth was stunted? My tree leaves dried because of the heater so i cut the leaves off. Now the steam is very tall and just a few leaves on the top. I think pruning it will be the best solution but is it ok to prune it lower than where the leaves are?
Hey there! You can prune at a node below where the leaves are - so long as your tree is healthy (not dying of root rot or something similar) it’ll put the growth out of a lower node :)

I have grown an avocado tree from its pit. It is about 20 months old and it is HUGE. The largest leaves are about 16-18" long and 4-5" wide. I have pruned it a couple of times and it has branched out beautifully. Problem ? Room. It has taken up so much space that there is no where for it to keep growing. (indoors, Vancouver, Canada) Would cutting / pruning it way back kill it? I wish I could send you a photo of it, but I'm not sure how to do that. It is in a 12" ceramic pot that is only about 8" deep. Instead of pruning it back, should I repot it to a slightly larger floor-pot ? Right now it is in my bedroom ... on a dresser. Help!

Good question, Chris! I’d say now - BUT, give it another month to let it settle into its new pot. Transplanting is a stressful event for plants and it needs time to settle. Pruning is also a stressful event: basically, when a tree is pruned, it goes into crisis mode - using a bunch of energy into new growth. Right now, your tree needs to put that growth into its roots. In a months time, once it’s settled, I’d be comfortable pruning :) good luck!

Good question! During warmer months (spring and summer). I’ve done them in autumn and winter... but they typically won’t grow until water months.

As many/as few as you want! I have pruned back trees to just the stem with no leaves above it and they've grown back just fine. It's up to you :)

Will this work if your tree is like 6 ft tall? We inherited an avocado tree and it actually looks like Charlie Brown's Christmas tree. It literally has three branches and is over 6 ft tall.
Never pruned my avocado tree. In 4 years its now 2m high in a vase. The right ambient is more important than pruning.
I work as an arborist/tree surgeon, and learned that not pruning is the best pruning if a plant is healthy!
