You are right that modern cars are too isolating. I think it's a big reason people seem to be driving more recklessly. The sensation of speed is dulled by the comfort and quiet of the vehicle.
There was a colleague at my old work who used to drive like a hooligan. Crashed his hot hatch several times, eventually writing it off when he rolled it into a ditch. He replaced it with... a Lotus! We all thought, that's it, he's going to die! But actually, the sensation of speed in the Lotus was immense. It was a rough, loud, ride and you really felt every bump in the road. It was so terrifying to drive, it actually made him a much more careful driver.
I think an open top, stripped down sports car, like a Caterham 7 or even an Ariel Atom should be your next purchase!

I have a car with a loud racing exhaust, a 2008 Audi S6 V10, but because i don't want to upset no one i have exhaust valves installed, so normally they are closed and the car sounds factory and silent, only when im away from the neighborhood i open them and all hell goes loose haha. There is no reason to create bad "climate, between the neighbours.

One or two bikes is great to hear every now and then, but it's literally all day on nice days and to be honest, Harleys aren't the best sounding bikes no matter what Easy Rider mag told us, especially when they're opened up. Give me an old British twin or single anyday. In fact, give me a Merlin or Griffon on song over anything land-borne.

I recently modified my Rover 100 (Metro), it was a 1.1 8v with 60bhp it's now a 1.8 twin cam 16v with about 150bhp and Metro GTi brakes, suspension and a Piper exhaust (done to a high standard by a professional who knows these cars as I wanted it done properly).
It's so fun to take up into the Derbyshire dales and have a blast or to a sprint course, it's also fun to watch peoples reactions expecting it to be a mobile chicane when it takes off.I agree not many people go for a drive just to enjoy their car these days, this car has definitely rekindled that passion for me.

Last time I checked a vehicle cannot be louder than when it left the factory in the UK. My exhaust is not very loud at all and is still much quieter than many performance and sports cars and bikes but the MOT did advise my "exhaust is noisy" though didn't fail it. the rules on this aren't very clear in the UK. The exhaust has 2 boxes to reduce the volume and drone and is a cat back system on a petrol car so is still emissions compliant. I also have body kit parts, an air intake, a custom remap and some other cosmetic mods which are all legal and MOT compliant and declared to my insurer, Admiral, who are very modification friendly.

Last Car That I Modified Was A 4.0L Jeep Grand Cherokee. Like You I Changed The Exhaust For A Staines Steel One, However I Had A Custom One Made By An Exhaust Specialist As There Wasn't An Off The Shelf One Available For The Jeep. I Also Had The Cat Removed As The Vehicle Was Lpg and Therefore The Cat Was Redundant and No Longer A Legal Requirement As long As I Kept It Running On The Lpg. With The 4.0L Straight Six Engine It Sounded Fantastic, But Like Yours, Not Too Loud As To Anoy The Neighbours.

I have a Milltek exhaust on my C30. It's fantastic. Almost totally silent when you want it to be, but sounds fantastic (but still fairly quiet) at full chat, and one of the best sounding 'versions' of the 5 pot sound I've heard - and I've heard a LOT of different exhausts on that engine.
I have found that the backbox can get loose baffles after several years, and rattles when off throttle, but Milltek have been true to their word both times it's happened and replaced the backbox FOC as per the lifetime warranty.
Your car sounds spot on now - Just the right amount of sound at the right time. Sounds much like the 1.8t Audi engine which i've come to like.
As for have you modified your car... Yeah, I've probably put well over £10k into my Volvo. The engine isn't too massively modified (only 316bhp, but with 384lbft/520nm torque), but the handling and braking have been properly done and it's pretty much the opposite of most Volvos in that it's better in corners than straight lines. Plenty of videos on my channel including a trackday the other day. Have the two race cars too but they were bought from competitors already prepped.
I know what you mean with everybody doing exhausts lately - I've only just watched George @GCM fit an exhaust to Devon & Cornwall Police's Mk3 RS. You could maybe do some content together someday, both very much into the road safety message.

About four decades ago I went through a phase of customizing my car, mostly not performance enhancing, things like chasing indicators (long before they appeared on any production models) HiFi sound system, interior light dimmer, reversing lights (before they started to appear in production models), custom anti theft system, custom electronic ignition (this did improve performance a little)
At this time there were plenty of college mates who made major changes to their cars - engine and gearbox swaps, exhausts, wheels, suspension. None of this was ever reported to the insurance companies and some of it affected steering geometry and handling, but I don't recall them ever getting pulled over by the boys in blue.

I did have a remap done on a diesel Corsa years ago. Did it as much for improvement in economy as for performance - it made more of a positive difference to the latter and did make it more enjoyable to drive. But I suspect it put more load on the transmission which is not good when you have a dual mass flywheel.

I've done some basic mods for my cars (exhaust and intake mainly). Now I have a WRX wagon that I'm going a bit heavier into modding. Here in Finland, you are quite free to put mods in your car, especially ones that don't interfere with any safety/emissions stuff. Insurance companies get their data of your registration, so if the mod isn't something that requires you to do a so called "change MOT" (the changes are marked in your registration slip), you don't really have to worry.
Modifying your car is something everyone should do imo. If you have a house, you will decorate it and renovate it to make it look more like you. You will probably do the same with your phone or bicycle. But for some reason modding cars gets you stamped as a juvenile, even though the end goal is modifying something you own to fit more to your personal taste.

I have been modding cars since I was 10 years old with a van that my father donated to me nearly 60 years ago I am currently refurbishing my 1303 Beetle with a new hi-perf engine, currently it has a cooking 1600 with minor mods but the rest is fully modified as I believe the last thing you should do on the list is the engine. The car has achieved what some might call the 'Euro look' although that was not the intention - performance was. The suspension and brakes are modified Porsche with Porsche wheels. In its present form the car has outstanding driveability without speed much to the surprise of many. It will outhandle and out brake many modern cars and I have found that too many following drivers completely underestimate its ability to go around corners and to stop. The car is fully comp insured as a modified vehicle that costs me 1/4 of the cost for my standard Skoda Superb. It also has the benefit of being tax and MOT exempt although the last time it was on the MOT rollers the tester was amazed at its stopping ability., especially the hydraulic handbrake! .

So, I changed to another insurer when I did the modifications. But even then, the insurance company has a limit on the BHP of 30%. I was also worried about the exhaust noise, so I had a resonator fitted, which lowered the exhaust tone. But be careful Ashley once you start, it's hard to stop.

  • @Interknetz
    @Interknetz Рік тому

To add to "make sure it doesn't void your warranty", modifications usually shouldn't effect warranty, assuming modifications or repairs are done properly, along with the modification or repair not being the cause of whatever issue you're claiming on warranty to be fixed. It's worth noting that companies cannot void warranty if they cannot prove that such a modification/repair attributed to whatever claim you're making with warranty. I.e they couldn't turn around and say "yeah the roof leak isn't covered under warranty because you modified your exhaust thus your entire warranty is void"; you would likely win in court (though consumers typically won't take this route, as it's generally not worth the cost.)
Of course for insurance it's different, not informing them of a modification that can change how the car handles/performs on the road can most definitely void your insurance if you were involved in an accident and were found to have unaccounted for modifications like springs. I would presume it also comes in where it would be at the discretion of the insurance company that whatever undeclared modification had attributed to the accident. To me, I don't think an exhaust would be a factor, but insurance companies can be funny about anything; after all they exist to make money first.

Very ridiculous, then my Suzuki SV650 had a road legal can on it that was still loud but not horrendous. My current Triumph Sprint ST 1050 has a Dominator system that is actually nicely throaty down low but sounds great around 5-6k and beyond. It's great for commuting because I can enjoy the noise without annoying my neighbours leaving or waking up anyone in the towns I go through. With any mods, you have to consider the perception of other road users. Sure, exhausts are great but there is a limit, same with lights

As you said, and as some may not be aware, anything that increases the performance or value of your car may increase your car insurance. You must always check with your insurance company beforehand. If it does and you haven’t told them, and have a crash your insurance maybe rendered invalid.
Is this something unique to Britain? Would explain why we don’t have a decent mod market.
The other point is about modern cars, or some of them, and their factory stock exhaust systems. You may find that almost silent exhaust develops a nice sound above a certain point in the rev range, say 3,000 for a petrol. I’m talking about regular cars here, so not Audi S-Line or Focus ST type cars. My petrol Honda does it and so did my 2010 VW Polo 1.4 petrol-that was more surprising as that engine wasn’t a fancy V-TEC like in the Honda.

not need to add extra sound to my car, but i do tend to ride a lower gear at lower limits of in the hills and mountains . as higher gear and the gas is like on and off switch so just more easy and better on the knee to has less bad angle. uses more gas more less pain so can always hear engine. this summer gone the back box finally gave up when passing a cyclist, car went from quite to and old rally car, popping and all sorts when let of the gas, driven about 100 miles in wales before finding a garage and time i found a garage it was so much louder. but finding a garage what was not 3 to 4 times the cost it should be as at home quote £120, finally found same in north wales after mad quotes of close to £480 and £340 for a back box. well it was so loud my mate said she could hear me over mile away but was also a bit fun too, that 4 days looking for a fare deal it was way too tempting to use more of each gear, and amazed just how quite it was when it was fixed. now it worn in its a little louder and due shape a slight different sound as back box from square factory to a round one but it dose the job even tho small engine it still makes me smile as nippy light weight with a fun sound

I've not done any car mods before but my new Kona N has an adjustable exhaust which I think is great. I when I'm in the normal mode there is some growl to it but you can tell it's muted. Being outside it you wouldn't think too much of it when idling. At revs you can tell there's something there but it's not overwhelming Then when it's put into "N" sport mode the valves open up and it sounds meaty even when idling. Hit high revs and it sounds like a proper racer but with lots more pops and bangs. It's so fun to drive and it sounds great.

      @J1mston Рік тому +1

@@Emersonbarclay I'm really impressed with what Hyundai have done with them, It's like 2 cars in one. You have that beastly 280 bhp engine in both the i30N and the Kona N, plus things like an E-diff which means you have a car that will hold it's own on a track and then inside you get comforts like heated and cooled seats, a heated steering wheel, Smart Cruise Control, lane assist and blind spot assist. It'll go down a motorway as stress free as I'd like and then on a B road it'll automatically shift to N mode when it reads a double road sign (if you turn on that feature).
I had a MK8 Golf GTI before it, the Golf was definitely smarter in the tech (when it worked) but it lacked in the fun department a little, I thought. That, plus the many issues like what Ashley briefly mentioned, I'm happy I made the switch.
I looked briefly at a Stinger when I was shopping around. They look really nice as well, just a bit too long for my preferences.

If you stay with Skoda you'll get the very well-respected DSG dual-clutch box, which will change gear quickly and smoothly. I think the newer Civics use a CVT automatic which will be less engaging.

Removing an OPF won't just affect the engine throw lights etc. Since the new regulations came in, it's illegal to remove.
Exhausts are a minefield at the moment. They need to also be type approved, so non stamped stuff or stuff stamped track use only is not legal. Very tricky since some markets don't bother to get that done at all, so most HKS exhausts are out.
In theory you aren't allowed to modify an exhaust to be any louder than the stock one, which is even stricter than TUV under the newest regulations

In terms of telling your insurance company about things, I've had some dashcams wired so I've got two lots of Viofo A139 Pros after seeing your review and some others, even used your code to get £10 or £20 off and now I have 4k both front and rear coverage. Not sure if I need to tell my insurance or hire purchase because they're completely removable etc and my old car just had one in the cig lighter socket. Think I have to wait to pay off the settlement on finance before I can go and fit a reversing camera or sensors

no! nooo! ash we're too old for this now lol. i stopped doing these mods since turning 30. regards to the performance, you're right! you'll be lucky to get 1-2 hp from the slightly freer flowing muffler on these cat backs but you mentioned it was a thicker exhaust and that can actually slow your car down with the hot gasses losing velocity in the wider pipes. i did this years ago on a gt86 and got a 3 inch cat back when the stock one was 2.7. noticed it felt sluggish so had it dyno'd (was mapped prior so knew the figures before) and it was down around 7bhp from memory.

Old School mechanics were easier to deal with in some respects whereas a modern car frequently needs a remap of the ECU/Ignition system.
