I recently pulled out my fluid by a drain plug drop and fill and got out 6.2 qts. Went back with 5.2 qts so dealer had it overfilled. This Altima's transmission is now acting like new! My dealer advised no change and said that it would do more harm than good. I'm so sick of people saying " it's gonna blow up if you don't use the Oem fluid from the dealership." None of the car makers make their own fluid. An oil company is given a recipe by the car maker and they make it for them. It takes nothing for another oil company to sample that oil and reproduce it. They just can't name it the same, i.e. Mercon Dexron etc. etc. But they can match the specs that those fluids have and be compatible. Use your common sense people.
One of the first things I did when my 19 civic coupe ex-t hit 20k miles was change the cvt fluid out. I've been now running castrol cvt fluid longer than the oem stuff was ever in there lol. I do a drain and fill once a year. 1 gallon drains out, and a gallon of castrol is only $24.00 at Walmart. At 70,000 miles I did the pan filter, and the cartridge filter for a second time. When I dropped the pan I was amazed at how little metal dust was on the magnets. Even when my car was at 20k and I did the first drain and fill I noticed a huge change in performance with castrol. I and many others are convinced it's actually better than the oem honda fluid. During my initial drain and fill, and something I HIGHLY recommend is to do multiple drain and fills if switching brands. I do a x3 . Then after 5,000 miles one more to be sure. For $100 it's worth it. I'm at 74,000 now and not a single issue.
I see many ppl are looking for info on the "proper level" on CVT trans fluid.. since Nissan has removed the dipstick in 2013 or newer models. Here is how it is done! On all Nissan model years "prior to" 2013 using NS-2: Fluid level should be checked with the fluid warmed up to 122°F to 176°F at the dipstick.. When checking a 2013 or newer model Nissan CVT, the NS-3 CVT trans fluid, the fluid level must be checked at the fluid level check bolt on the transmission, "and the car must be level".. You need an OBD tool that can read the transmission fluid temp! The level of the trans fluid should be checked at 98-113°F. If you allow the transmission fluid to heat-up to normal operating temp 122°F to 176°F, the fluid will expand too much, and will give the false impression that you have overfilled. Again, the trans fluid level must be checked at 98-113°F.. and at that temperature, the fluid should be a fast drip or very fine stream overflowing from the fluid level check bolt hole on the transmission.
That Valv CVT fluid is synthetic and the Nissan OEM NS-2 is conventional. Since a drain and fill is only roughly half the fluid, you might have some blending issues on the first change.

I was told by a nissan dealership that the transmission on my 2009 nissan altima 3.5L was a none serviceable, which is bull, because you can replace the filter. The transmission isn’t a sealed unit.
Why is it people NEVER pour from these bottles correctly? Turn the bottle so the spout is at top and the fluid won't chug when you pour it! Same goes for antifreeze jugs

@@hayderali9385 No. there is no serviceable filter. Nissan has internal factory and you cant change it. Per Nissan you don't need to changed trans fluid for life time. Don't listen and everyone should changed at least every 40 miles. There are felpro gaskets but the holes don't quite line up!
6 qts is what my 2012 maxima took, but i blew out 2 more qts through the external filter lines. the oil that came out when pushing air was really really dirty .ran car for 30 minute till at 165 degrees and was right level. if you check the levels not at 165 degrees the levels wont be correct. mine was showing low at cold but when hot it was correct. dont overfill! btw decided on valvoline cvt. 77k on my car probably the first change. but i bought used
What about the dirty fluid in the cooler by the radiator and with reusing an existing gasket probably a good idea to use factory recommend Torque and tightening sequence just thinking out loud
You’re right. I’ve heard 7 or 8 torque is the factory spec but I couldn’t find it anywhere to be sure about it. I just tightened it just enough to hold everything and check for leaks almost every week. As I say in the video gaskets are there for leaks. If you don’t have any there’s no need for replacement.

Stephen Martin since I changed the oil frequently since the first day I didn’t feel I need to change it. Although I’m planning to change the filter as well the next time I’m changing the oil.
He went to all that trouble and did not change the filter which is right there when you drop the pan! Cheap and easy. Now he has new fresh fluid going through an old dirty filter. Totally incomplete job.
@@spinalglacier it does but you most likely won't need to change it since it uses a magnet to grab the dirt. It is different than other types of filters. The reason anyone would change the fluid is not only because it gets dirty, but also because of the fact that both chemical and physical reactions due to milage and heat and other things would make the fluid lose its viscosity. That is why you need to change the fluid! Some people think since you opened the pan already you might be better off to change everything you can! I have a different opinion...
@@isamisam19 I do that every 20k to 25k miles. I recently sold my car with 215,000 miles on it and yet not a single issue with the transmission or the power of the car. Just wondering if u had any problems with transmission after doing this? A couple people have told me they never had any transmission problems until they serviced it.
If they had problems after servicing it, it's because they were about to have problem. A nice new thicker oil is always better then the used worn oil. You always do engine oil changes you should always do tranny oil changes yoo
@@abe-zchannel1285 hey man quick question my car only works wen i put it in reverse bt wen i put it in drive it doesn't work it won't move i give it a lil gas the rpm goes above 1 bt it fluctuates between 2 an 1...what should i do to get it to drive...it has transmission fluid in it so that's not it...can help me find an solve the problem???
I have a 2007 Nissan Altima when I put it into reverse it slams hard also it’s just starting to kind of skip when I’m driving and when slowing down to a stop it wines up, ALSO going down a hill not hitting the gas my RPMs will rise and lowers up and down I know it’s a lot of questions just looking for some input
David Agee there is a high chance that your transmission is about to go. For slamming on reverse, I’m not sure what exactly might cause that. In downhills the car automatically changes gears. Now in your case because you have skipping issues it doesn’t downshift or upshift properly. For transmission noises and skips if by changing the fluid it didn’t make a difference there’s not a lot you can do other than getting it completely serviced or sell your car. If the problem is noticeable you might be able to reduce it temporary but the damage has done.
I haven’t changed the trans oil yet just now seeing this video, I drive an automatic car also and I was told the mass air flow sensor or the throttle body could cause the idling problem/ rpms but the transmission i am not sure it just goes back and forth at slow speeds like stutters and the reverse I put it in reverse wait one second then it slams if I put it in reverse and automatically hit the gas it’ll rev high and slam really hard and won’t let me go past like 5mph I’d have to shut the car off or it wouldn’t let me move
David Agee For the idle problem there are a lot of reasons that could cause the issue. With the gears I think the damage is done by what you’re describing. Changing the fluid might help the noises and the kicking issue, but I think you have to think about either the full service of the transmission or changing your car.
Damn that was the last thing I wanted to do was change the trans... I have almost 170k miles I bought it used for a bad deal already put a lot of money into it damn hopefully it’s not the trans I need to get it checked out
I had the RPM issue on my 2010 Nissan Altima and fixed it by cleaning the throttle bottle body, Would recommend trying that ! SN- I also changed the spark plugs !
Super helpful. I just bought a 2012 altima 2.5 so with 110,000 miles. It runs great and transmission fluid looks clean but I'm gonna change it just in case. I thought it was just a one bolt drain but this video was helpful. How many quarts is needed to refill? Thanks
Some cars have drain plug and some don't. I would recommend dropping pan like he did to make sure you clean the pan and magnets. I would go a further step and change the filter or clean the filter.
The filter is inside which you can change if you wish. There are only a few screws and you can replace it. I did change it the first time I changed the fluid but it’s nice to do that maybe every 50k miles.
Definitely do it. I have a 2012 Altima and I read it’s recommended to do Tran flush at 100,000 miles with Tran fluid being changed not flushed every 50000 after. Hope this helps

I'm completely new to DIY. I'm watching lot of videos. I remember seeing in one of the videos they change both inside and outside filter. do we have to do that ?
I'm not sure what the outside filter is for Altima but for the inside filter you can change that if you want to. It's just a few extra bolts and it comes right off. But personally, I've never changed that filter and I have driven my car for more than 250K miles with no issues. I've just changed the fluid every 20k to 25k miles and I was good.
unlike Nissan Maxima 2009 it has a drain plug in the pan which makes it easy for changing but I had a question regarding the CVT oil filter it a small piece with three bolts I guess why you did not change it since you already open the pan and it is cheap by the way.
mouad alrifaei good question. I actually had the new filter to change but I also changed the filter 30k miles before shooting this video and since my oil didn’t seem too awful I decided to change the filter next time. I’ll post a video changing the filter, so stay tune!
@@abe-zchannel1285 Thanks bro for responding and I had another question if you wouldn't mind did you use a torque wrench for tightening the bolts because I am gonna replace my oil filter for the first time soon and I am afraid to damage the bolts.
My Mothers 2017 Rogue has one also. I wonder if the pan with a plug would fit on one that didn't originally have a plug. My only guess would be to compare the gaskets from the two and see if they match. Even the "sealed" transmission my Passat has comes with a drain plug. It is only sealed because it has no dipstick. These still have vents which some would say allows the fluid to become contaminated.
Was his a 2.5 or 3.5? Pleasant to watch appreciate the thorough video. Dislike when people edit out too much of the video and then skip things. Can I just clean the filter or is it better to just replace filter altogether? I’m gonna check now how much it is at autozone and compare prices to Nissan. Im an OEM kinda guy, but wallet isn’t🥴
Mine is a 2.5! You might be able to just clean it but I never changed it since I change my fluid every 20k miles. I only care about the quality! Sometimes OEM is not as good as after market. Specifically in auto industry!
The 2007 has a drain plu but that doesn’t drain the entire system. There is still fluid in the lines that has to be flushed out. Are you saying yours has no drain plug and by dropping the pan, drains 100% of the CVT fluid?
I just watched your video and I noticed that you didn't even start the car to check your transmission oil we all know you have to start your car to check the oil 😂
How is that Super Tech fluid working for you so far? How many miles have you put on the car since you used it? My Mother's 2017 Rogue has a drain plug on the transmission. I am not sure if the pan for one of those would fit that Altima but it that pan does look similar. I only said similar because I never had either one to compare. I think the best way to know would be to stack both gaskets together and see if they match (don't use both on the transmission). The only reason I don't like taking a pan off is I had a bad experience when I did my Jetta and the transmission pan had a slight leak but afterward but it was easy to fix. I just didn't like that insanely priced fluid leaking out. VW transmission fluid is $25 per liter and maybe more depending on which fluid it is. They have a gasket that is more like a rubber gasket that does not get any sealant used on it. It is not a flat gasket and it self aligns to the pan. That is good news for people who don't like to clean off old silicone which can be a pain in the ___. That is especially true since there are sometimes wires to the solenoids around there are I can just imagine some klutz accidentally damaging something trying to clean that silicone off.
John Doe that Super Tech is the motor oil not the trans fluid. It’s a cheaper brand in Walmart. I change that oil every 3000 miles. I used Valvoline cvt transmission fluid for my transmission. I bought them around $8 for a qt. I do change the trans fluid every 18k to 20k miles and it’s been great so far. If my car had a drain plug I would have open the pan only to clean the pan itself maybe every 100k. Also I don’t like to change the gasket for the reason I mention in the video. It’s a metal gasket and it doesn’t leak, so I cleaned it up and put it back on. Next I’ll be changing the transmission filter which is inside the transmission. So stay tuned for that as well.
@@abe-zchannel1285 I know Super Tech is sold at Walmart. I was just wondering if their transmission fluid is good. I am usually skeptical of such brands. My Passat is one of those cars known to be somewhat finicky about the fluid. The worst thing is that the fluid for it is $25 per liter. Numerous searches show that it is really just an Aisin WS or one of the equivalents. Aisin made that transmission anyhow. Aisin WS is one of the few fluids known to be OK for that transmission. You would be surprised how many of those multi vehicle ATFs list every spec you can think of but in reality are truly just one of those.
John Doe as far as I know Super Tech don’t have CVT trans fluid. They might have the type you need for your Passat. In my case I knew that I would change the fluid more frequently, that’s why I went with the cheapest one in the market (Valvolin). High quality oils/fluids, however, would make a significant difference in a long run!

@@hankrodriguezhill7029 Should we replace transmission fluid for 220,000 miles? Mechanic suggests rather not, due to the sensor may not able to learn the new fluid density.
Thanks for the video, But you gave bad advices. 1. Never use any fluid other than Nissan fluid (20$ at the dealer). Unless you are asking for problems. These transmission are junk and you don't want to make them junkier 2. You should have replaced the gasket. It was good when it was under bolt tension, but when you take it away it'll never seal right again.
Mohammed Hnoosh 1- NS-2 is the factory recommendation CVT fluid. 2- Gasket is for stopping leaks. I drove my car for 220K miles and changed the trans fluid 7 times and since I never had a single drop of leak I never changed the gasket. You can choose to change your gasket as many time as you want but it wouldn’t do anything extra for you. Unless you have a damaged gasket that causes leak.
@@abe-zchannel1285 up until the time that after you go through the process of changing the fluid and after getting it all done and then only to find that after the 7th time you now have a leak, and now you get to do the entire process over again and purchase the gasket and some new fluid unless you're going to reuse what you dump out again.

Hi there ol, I own nissan Altima 2010 , when I'm driving my car at back up or at round about or at speed 40-60km there is jerk sound sleeping clutch comes from gear can somebody help. I never changed gear oil so far .
Agua yemaya Basically based on the way you jack your car you might get different amount out because of the car being tilted in a different angle! For example the first time I took out 5 qt and put in 5. This time it was less. Also, the fluid will be slightly reduced when you drive the car for thousands of miles. Your car is new and if you keep changing the fluid regularly you should put back the same amount you put in.
My 2007 Nissan idles really rough when I put it in gear I have to wait a second for it to jerk into it and it slams into R and it does a lot of weird jolting when driving you think the fluid change (180k miles almost and not sure if the fluid has ever been changed) will do a difference at all
David Agee I’m not sure why it takes a second to go into gears, maybe the solenoid issues or the transmission is about to go! I hope the fluid would heal it a little before you get rid of your car 😉.
Oh yeah? What’s the name of the additive? Do you know the chemical reaction that messing it up? Who told you that? Your buddy who works in the next door shop? Stop making shit up...
Valvoline is actually a better fluid than the NS-2 Nissan Fluid...and it's a Synthetic Fluid too. It has comparable specifications and you'd experience no significant difference.
I can't seem to find the 19 bolt pan gasket on this car. Is this one of the reasons you didn't change yours? Parts stores only list the 18 bolt one that doesn't fit.
I didn’t change mine because it wasn’t leaking! I drove that car for 250k miles and I changed the fluid every 20k miles or so and I never changed the filter nor the gasket. It worked for me but some people disagree if you read the comments! At this point it’s up to you. Also the supply chain for many parts are interrupted due to covet situation.
It’s best to look up your cars owners manual instead of trusting what others say a mechanic told me the same thing about my 2012 Altima 2.5s and I decided to look in my owner’s manual and there it says where the dipstick is located and where to refill it
2 filters. One inside the oil pan. The other is a small pleated filter in the return line housing attached to the trans. Nissan does not list the small pleated filter but it is there and serviceable.
RidemFast is 100% correct. There are TWO filters. The easy one is in the transmission pan. The second is a pain in the ass to remove! There are UA-cam videos showing you how to get to it. Search for hidden filter.
@@abe-zchannel1285 I stand corrected. I assumed that Altima's had an "oil plug" because my Maxima does. But then the old adage says, "The word assume makes an ass out of you and me". Oh well. Thanks for correcting me.

Lenard sorry about the late respond, For some reason 2007-2012Nissan Altima models don’t have any drain plug for the transmission fluid. Even if you take it to the dealership they either suck the fluid out from the top or open the pan.
Eric Williams it funny you’re saying that! My experience is contrary!!!!!! I’m on my 3rd Nissan Altima with the same transmission.

I have a 08 Altima coupe

Some cars have drain plug and some don't. I would recommend dropping pan like he did to make sure you clean the pan and magnets. I would go a further step and change the filter or clean the filter.
There should be a drain nut somewhere on the pan
I’m sure if you stare at it long enough it’ll appear!!!
Yeah, their should be but their is not. Nissan says the fluid lasts a lifetime back then. They dont say that anymore...
What is the torque on the bolts? What about the second transmission filter?
I’ve seen 7 for the torque but I myself just tightened them just enough to hold!
The filter is inside which you can change if you wish. There are only a few screws and you can replace it. I did change it the first time I changed the fluid but it’s nice to do that maybe every 50k miles.
Don't change the internal filter. This doesn't go bad. The one to change is the external paper media filter.

What is the quantity of fluid, i own a 2012 Nissan Altima 2.5s coupe
Dropping the pan, you will drain 5.5-6 quarts
What's the point if you didn't change the filters
unlike Nissan Maxima 2009 it has a drain plug in the pan which makes it easy for changing but I had a question regarding the CVT oil filter it a small piece with three bolts I guess why you did not change it since you already open the pan and it is cheap by the way.
mouad alrifaei good question. I actually had the new filter to change but I also changed the filter 30k miles before shooting this video and since my oil didn’t seem too awful I decided to change the filter next time. I’ll post a video changing the filter, so stay tune!

There is an external paper media filter on the transmission housing.

Hi excellent video ...But I have a question Why I used 5 CVT and I took out 5 too is that right ? my nissan is altima 2018
